Titan's Environmental Policy

We are all increasingly concerned about our environment. This is of course also true for us at Titan, where our policies are tailored to be beneficial to the environment we share. The materials we use in construction and manufacturing as well as at home all have an impact on the local and global environment. Whether you are a consumer, specifier or architect, the environmental impact of our decisions have become much more important.

The timber processing industry, which services Titan, welcomes these concerns –after all timber being natural, organic and renewable has numerous environmental advantages over competing materials. It is perhaps surprising that timber is occasionally perceived as environmentally unfriendly and that due to campaigns by pressure groups consumers and specifiers have opted for alternative materials. It is only by continuing to have a timber industry that the forests of the world will be preserved.

National Forestry Policies.

Different countries have their own national policies regarding their forestry management. Britain has an active and flourishing forest sector but we continue to import around 80% of all the timber we use in this country including softwoods, hardwoods and panel products such as plywood, chipboard, MDF and other modern forms of timber. The vast majority of timber comes from just a dozen countries - primarily the UK, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Canada, USA, Russia, Latvia, Ireland, Brazil, Malaysia and Ghana. Titan uses only softwood, produced as a renewable resource in managed Scandinavian forests. Details of the forestry policies in these countries can be found on the TTF's Forests Forever Campaign website.

The British timber industry, which purchases timber, processes and manufactures timber products and then distributes, retails and installs wood, has to consider the environmental and forestry record of many countries world-wide. In addition to ensuring compliance with national forest policy regulations, further assurances can be sought through certification. It is Titan's policy to seek assurances from its suppliers that the originating producers are compliant with their country policies.

The Local Environment

Titan's rural location amidst trout lakes in the Surrey Hills makes us acutely aware of our responsibilities. We make no discharge of effluents from our industrial processes, and ensure that timber wastage and disposal are minimised. We hold a Certificate of Registration under the Control of Pollution (Amendment) Act 1999 and take our responsibilities seriously.
