Illegal garden sheds identified by aerial images

Illegal garden sheds and agricultural buildings built without a permit in Washington are being discovered by way of aerial photography.
The News Tribune reports that around 2,000 illegal buildings in Pierce County have been discovered using the new programme, with county officials saying it will improve public safety.
The "building amnesty programme" compared aerial images taken in 2005 and 2008 to find new buildings and highlight those that were built without a permit, states the news provider.
The fines are ignored if property owners pay the fees and get the necessary building permits and inspections.
Yet council members have criticised the move, saying it could be an invasion of privacy.
Planning department director Chuck Kleeberg told the news provider that "people get hurt with illegal structures", and that the scheme was more about ensuring buildings were safe than punishing property owners.
