Lock garden shed to keep out potential thieves

16:03:20 5th March 2010

The first thing to consider when burglar-proofing a home is to check the garden shed, it has been claimed.

Writing for gather.com, Owen Jones states that the garden shed in the backyard holds items like ladders, crow bars and screwdrivers – all of which could come in handy for someone looking to break in.

"The first thing to consider is whether you have anything in your garden, shed or garage that will help a burglar get into your home," he said.

"If you do, then lock them away. Keep the shed and garage doors locked at all times."

For those items that can not fit in the shed, such as tall ladders, Mr Jones said they could be chained to an outer wall.

Allotment owners have also been advised to protect their garden shed and tools this season, with residents in Essex being offered free alarms, reports the Clacton & Frinton Gazette.

Essex Watch administrator Paul Teague told the news provider that residents need to be more vigilant, especially now that the weather is getting warmer and more people are out and about.
