Hi, I'm Robin Antill, founder of 1st Choice Leisure Buildings, and I use my expertise gained over 39 years in the garden buildings industry to understand that each customer is different. With my manufacturing, retailing and customer service experience my articles help people choose their ideal shed, garden workshop, summerhouse, log cabin or garden office needs to suit their requirement and that is key to satisfaction. And what do I do when I'm not writing? You may find me following Grimsby Town Football Club or riding roller coasters - so plenty of 'ups and downs' in my life.

Besides having a good style and great design the benefit of a useful outdoor storage room or garden shed to a house make it a better option and more attractive to buy. Along with beautiful ornamented plants and great garden design this is what the family in the 21st century is looking for. However if the garden shed is not available then an addition of a quality garden shed or timber workshop will enhance the property.

Most sheds are made from timber which is aesthetically pleasing to the eye, metal sheds are very practical and plastic shed tend to be environmentally friendlier. Concrete sheds are also available and are virtually indestructible. Many years ago even asbestos was used, thankfully now, being aware of how dangerous it is these are now banned.

Garden sheds are essentially a stand alone structure, similar to a single story house but much smaller. It, obviously, will be situated outdoors usually at the bottom of the garden where it will house a great manner of items, usually garden related. The needs of the family - and the size of the garden - will determine the size of the shed, however, it always better to go for a larger building as we nearly always underestimate the required space.

Garden sheds are used for a vast range of purposes, mainly storage and for extra decor. Also items required for potting, weeding & fertilising the garden and planting. All the garden tools tend to be kept in there as well as lawn mowers and hedge trimmers. Occasionally two sheds will be bought so items can be segregated - one for general storage and one for use as a workshop.

With garden buildings you do get what you pay for. There are cheap sheds, which may be fine if you don't need to keep the shed for more than a couple of years, but even then, they may not even last that long before water gets in ruining your valuables.. It's better to spend a little more to ensure that your new garden shed is an asset to you and not a liability.

It's possible to actually build a shed your self but generally, from a financial point of view, it's not worthwhile as the cost of the timber can sometimes be the same as buying a made up shed from the manufacturer. I found this out when running my own shed company for over 20 years where I found our profit came from buying timber in lorry loads at a large discount. This made sense for the timber importers as it's a lot cheaper to deliver direct from the docks to a factory rather than trying to deliver a small quantity to a single house.
