Hi, I'm Robin Antill, founder of 1st Choice Leisure Buildings, and I use my expertise gained over 39 years in the garden buildings industry to understand that each customer is different. With my manufacturing, retailing and customer service experience my articles help people choose their ideal shed, garden workshop, summerhouse, log cabin or garden office needs to suit their requirement and that is key to satisfaction. And what do I do when I'm not writing? You may find me following Grimsby Town Football Club or riding roller coasters - so plenty of 'ups and downs' in my life.

With the cost of gardening equipment and workshop tools rising and the high cost of garden furniture it is important that you take all precautions possible to alleviate the possibility of theft because you know it makes sense. The simplest thing you can do is to ensure that your garden shed or workshop is kept locked at all times when not being used. This, however, often gets overlooked as we can become complacent (I'm guilty of this) and feel this won't happen to us or that you don't have any great value in your shed.

What you need to remember even if the items in your garden shed are not worth very much they could be used to help break into your house which, besides the monetary value, can be very distressing. So this is a sobering thought.

So the advice is to lock your garden shed with a strong padlock and I recommend that you should use a fold over hasp and staple on the shed door because when the padlock is applied the screws in the hasp are covered. This means that the hasp and staple can not just be unscrewed. You can further strengthen your defences by the addition of a nut and bolt to each segment of the hasp and staple because this will mean that, even with a crow bar, the thief will not be able to rip the lock off your shed.

Always try to keep the windows covered so intruders can't see what is inside. Also if you add a gravel path down and around the shed this will also deter any thieves because the noise walking on the gravel will alert you to their actions. Always ensure that your garden fences, walls and gates are kept in good condition as this will act as a deterrent.

This general advice was reiterated by Huddersfield North Police recently and that action should be taken to ensure you properly secure your belongings. They said that as lawnmowers and power tools can be sold for quite a good price, with EBAY being a good outlet for these sales, so ensure these items are locked away. They further said that garden furniture and garden tools are also very saleable and that you must make it as difficult as possible to deter any thieves getting to your property.

Special attention should be given to the type of garden shed you have and you will find that garden sheds which are made from all T&G (tongue and grooved) timber complete with a timber floor will withstand a determined attack on its walls. This is because the T&G boards all work together to withstand any attack. You will find that all the wooden sheds sold by First Choice Leisure Buildings are made from all T&G timber boards.

In comparison garden sheds made from feather edge boards or overlapping boards are particularly at risk. Because even with the best lock in the world on the door it only takes a minute to rip the boards on the sides of the shed to gain access so the few pounds saved on buying these cheap sheds with be lost very easily when someone steals from it.

Another great option if you need extra security for your garden items is to invest in the SafeStore heavy duty security sheds from 1st Choice. These are made from 1.2mm thick Gavatite steel panels and come complete with a steel base. So when assembled will be like your own personal safe and all your garden valuable with be kept safe and secure.

The key is to ensure that the shed you buy for the garden is not a cheap overlapping shed but one made from T&G boards or heavy duty steel shed. This will ensure piece of mind, and in the end, that's got to be worth it.
