Hi, I'm Robin Antill, founder of 1st Choice Leisure Buildings, and I use my expertise gained over 39 years in the garden buildings industry to understand that each customer is different. With my manufacturing, retailing and customer service experience my articles help people choose their ideal shed, garden workshop, summerhouse, log cabin or garden office needs to suit their requirement and that is key to satisfaction. And what do I do when I'm not writing? You may find me following Grimsby Town Football Club or riding roller coasters - so plenty of 'ups and downs' in my life.

There are several different types of materials used to make garden sheds with timber or wood being the more traditional sheds. However, there are sheds available in plastic, concrete as well as metal or steel. All have different qualities and limitations so quite often the choice is personal preference.

Metal garden sheds are becoming quite popular with one of their main features being that they do not need to be treated like wooden garden sheds. Normally coming with warranties of 10-25 years, this is something which wooden sheds can't match. And this is without having to do anything. For the gardener who would like to do the least amount of work then the metal shed can be particularly attractive to them.

You will find that metal garden shed come in a large range of qualities and examples are the StoreChoice and GrandChoice shed ranges. These are good honest domestic garden sheds which do a great job of keeping your items dry in your garden. You are able to fit a padlock to these to deter the casual thief but by their very nature and inexpensive price tags will not stop any professional thieves.

Both of these ranges have vents which help to alleviate condensation and if you build a purpose built base with a DPC (damp proof course) built in then condensation should not be a problem. Unlike many of the cheaper metal sheds available. These two ranges are made abroad and are compactly packed for easy home delivery.

You could then look at the Trimetal range of metal garden sheds. The walls on these buildings are shaped to give the appearance of wood so you can have the advantages of a metal shed with the look of a wooden shed. Robustly built and come complete with a fire certificate, which is great if you are buying one for a mobile home park. The quality of these is so good they offer a 25 year guarantee, totally surpassing all other metal sheds makers. Made in the UK you can be sure you are helping other British workers and helping to reduce imports into this country.

If security is the key to your requirements then the SafeStore secure steel sheds should be your choice. Although the price range is substantially higher than the more basic metal sheds, you will find this is reflected in the thickness and construction of these buildings. Most are made from extra thick 1.2mm thick Galvatite steel and with door and with surrounds reinforced with 1.6mm steel box section the thieves have no chance. The larger sheds have a robust 5 point (pick resistant) locking system offering you unrivalled garden security.

Besides the high quality and high security offered by these SafeStore secure steel buildings they all come complete with a steel base-floor which none of the other ranges do. This means that when the shed is built you have a secure steel box which can't just be lifted up. Supplied in large panels for ease of construction. Make in the UK as well many of these steel sheds are made to insurance rated standard 1.

If the above are not suitable for you and you are looking for a slightly larger building then you could consider a Capital Steel Buildings. These are made in the UK to any size (literally) to suit your requirements. In a choice of colours and various options including steel roller doors, personal doors, skylights and insulated panels you can be sure these will meet your exacting requirements. These also come with a 25 year guarantee against rusting so you know you have a long lasting building.

Other advantages is that metal is not attacked by harmful termites or timber rot. It's harder for mice and other crawlies to make their home in a metal shed and the roof felt does not need replacing as it is not used.

All in all its worth giving metal sheds some consideration before making your choice of shed. As I have said before always try to see the shed before buying and be very aware of the cheap metal sheds seen in the catalogues in the high street. You NEVER have an opportunity to view these and it's not until they arrive in your garden that you realise why these metal sheds are so cheap. A well known fact is that a cheap sheds is not necessarily the best value shed.
