Adding A Meditation Garden
Now that the holidays have past and it is heading towards spring you are probably thinking about this years garden and the projects that you want to undertake for the new season. A meditation garden is a great way to increase the use of your garden and will make your time in the garden so much more fulfilling. Unlike a public meditation garden where the design is focused on appealing to the senses of a large and diverse group of people, your meditation garden is all about you and what you find calming and soothing.
While you work on your plan I am sure you will find out more about yourself and what makes you happy and gives you a sense of well being . This is great because it is all part of building that special space for you. Taking your time to think about what it is that most sets you at eases what a project like this is all about. A summer building or garden log cabin is often part of these relaxing gardens but it’s what ever suit YOU.
The design should be unique to you but in general these areas tend to have a few common design elements. The spot is usually out of the way not the focus of the garden, but a protected area off to the side that is screened from too much wind and sun. It should not be an elaborate design, either one that requires a lot of work or maintenance you want to relax and renew here not think about pruning and weeding.
This spot of reflection and renewal should also please your senses ornamental grasses and shrubbery can be planted to give some interest as well as a contrast of texture that would be appealing to the eye. As the wind blows gently through the grasses a nice rustling sound would stimulate your sense of hearing.
Perhaps a small water feature or fountain could provide some pleasant sounds that would sooth your inner self. If it pleases you how about some wind chimes to bring you into focus and let your sense of hearing be distracted with the light twinkle of the chimes when ever the breeze blows.
When planning your meditation garden some thought should be put into the idea of plantings that have fragrance to stimulate you sense of smell using blooms or even oils from the plants leaves which maybe given off when you brush against them. You should try to plan so that there is always a pleasant odor in the air. While choosing colors for the plantings green is sometimes chosen for it’s calming aspect instead of flamboyant color splashed through out that evoke a senses of excitement.
This of course is a personal choice and should be as you would like it. You may also want to include a garden statue or a gazing ball something that would be able to be a focal point to use when you are meditating. The possibilities are endless all built upon your likes and what gives you peace and calm.
While this garden is about an outdoors space for you to go and enjoy some moments of quiet and renewal it could just as easily be adapted to the indoors as well so that during the long winter months, or times of inclement weather you still a quiet area just for you. You can find a little nook or out of the way spot where you can setup a comfortable area to sit and surround your self with house plants.,or maybe a table top fountain the ideas are limited only by your imagination.
