Compelling Reasons To Grow Your Own Organic Vegetables
I am sure that many people will look at the title about growing your organic veg and think to themselves this seems like a lot of work and I just as soon go to the market. True not everyone wants a vegetable garden but there are many reasons why you should. In the old days before modern shipping and storage methods just about everyone raised their own vegetables or would barter for some with a neighbour.
As we moved in to the new high tech age brought on by the industrial revolution we also came up with a lot of new ideas like outsourcing. Outsourcing is where you buy something you need from someone else rather than make it yourself. Outsourcing seems like a great thing if there is something you need but don’t want to produce it yourself than you just find someone else willing to provided it to you for a cost.
This was not only good for business but it became a main stay of agriculture as well. The problem is that the small local family farm that was producing vegetables and fruit crops where now in competition with big business and where eventually driven out of business because the could not compete.
Well I guess you can say that’s progress and the only thing constant is change! Is it progress or is it something else? Lets look a little closer at this so called progress. We won’t have to look far just think back over the last couple of years how many people were sickened by bacteria in their salad greens or spinach that was packaged and produced hundreds or thousand of miles from where they live.
How about the hundreds of thousand eggs that were recently recalled and the products that were made with them because of contamination. Does that sound like progress or does that sound like we should all be afraid when we go to the store to buy some vegetables for tonight’s dinner.
The point is we have lost touch were our food is coming from more importantly how it is produced and harvested. What types of chemical fertilisers and pesticides have been used on it to provide a bigger harvest or a less blemished product. There are a lot of people getting sick now a days because the food supply is not nearly as safe as we have been led to believe and we can see that the government agencies that are suppose to be watching it are missing an awful lot.
What can we do to insure that we are eating healthy and feeding our families with food that is safe and nutritious? The answer is to grow your own vegetables organically. You will know that there are no pesticides and chemicals that are being ingested without your knowledge and that the food you are feeding your family is not only safe but as fresh as you can get.
Like anything else you will need to spend sometime learning different things but as your garden grows so will your knowledge and at some point you will ask yourself why did I ever think this was hard!
To do so this successfully a garden shed or garden workshop would be a useful asset so you can store your equipment in there and keep it safe. You can also store your produce in there provided you have a cool dark area free for that use.
There are many books, videos, online resources, as well as classes available to help you learn the skills you will need, but like any journey your organic gardening journey must start with the first step. So stop thinking about it and get started ! Isn’t your health and your families health wort a little time and effort?
