Sheds and garden corner summerhouses are emotive objects and, generally, are well loved buildings. You will find that some people see them, only, as essential objects to help with their gardens and gardening where as others could not bear life without them. Maybe it’s because they are an essential part of the British way of life which generates these feelings.
The range and style of these garden buildings is immense, certainly if you take a look at the better garden shed firms. The ‘run of the mill’ cheap sheds available on the web are only available in a restricted number of styles and very few choices of styles so these would tend to be treated as a basic help for the garden. The better sheds enable their owners to feel proud in THEIR shed confident in the knowledge that it has been made for THEM and has not sat in a dusty timber yard somewhere before being delivered to them.
If you take a look at the Diamond garden sheds you will see that they are available with solidly made Georgian style windows which, straight away, make the shed an attractive building. Also the option for a transverse style of roof make it look more like a summer house. These will also appeal to the lady of the house as they tend to appreciate the better things in life and might swing it enabling you to get a new larger shed. Worth considering!
To me garden sheds are a thing of beauty after being in this business for over 39 years. I love the feel, smell and appearance of timber and it is a great material to work with. The sheer flexibility of this material extends itself to the creation of some lovely buildings. All that is needed is for care and the right selection of timber to be used in making the shed to generate a work of art – well at least in my opinion! And also is a very green material in more ways than one.
To back up this point just a little while ago at an art festival in Liverpool garden sheds were featured as an attraction. At this festival, which is normally held every two years, the sheds were part of an exhibition entitled ‘Touched’. This exhibition set out to show various works and objects and how they have touched the lives of people.
A large area was converted into a garden and, with the use of Astroturf and trees made from pillars as well as garden sheds, become a focal point for the show. The artistic director claimed that it was really imaginative and I believed it was. During the ten week run this display along with the garden sheds were enjoyed by many including an international audience.
Another example of the outdoor building being displayed as a work of art was at Bridport in Dorset. Several playhouses were transformed into smaller versions of buildings from fairy tales, such as Goldilocks and the Three Bears.
To me I don’t see why these can not be seen as works of art. You often seen very strange objects such as pile of bricks or a collection of scrap from a rubbish tip described as ‘modern art’. The garden shed or corner summer house is definitely a much better work of art as you can understand the reasoning behind it and are able to enjoy on a daily basis. A winner in my eyes.
