20×6 Sheds – Long, Narrow Storage and Workshop Space
A 20×6 shed is a particularly useful building when you need plenty of length but want to keep the overall width to around 6ft. A 20ft x 6ft shed gives you approximately 120 square feet of nominal floor space, providing room for bicycles, garden machinery, tools, shelving and a workbench without requiring the garden width of an 8ft, 10ft or 12ft deep building.

Which 20×6 Shed Should I Choose?
The Platinum Fareham Apex has the traditional central roof ridge and is a good choice if you prefer a conventional timber-building appearance. The Platinum Fareham Pent gives you a single-slope roof. In contrast, the Platinum Fareham Reverse Apex changes the orientation of the building so that access from the longer elevation can be considered.
The basic Fareham specification is substantial, whichever roof style you choose. The buildings use pressure-treated timber framing, cladding, and flooring; include wide double doors and opening toughened-glass windows; and offer colour finishes and optional lining and insulation. My advice is therefore to choose the layout which works best in your garden rather than treating the three versions as completely different buildings.
Apex, Pent or Reverse Apex?
With a long 6×20 shed, entrance position deserves careful thought. An apex or pent arrangement may work well where you naturally approach from one end, while the reverse apex can be particularly useful where access from the 20ft elevation makes more sense.
I would decide where machinery, bicycles, shelving and any workbench will go before finalising the layout. On a building this long, placing doors in the right position can save you from repeatedly walking past everything else to reach equipment stored at the far end.
What Is a 20×6 Shed Best Used For?
A 20×6 shed is ideal where length is more useful than width. Bicycles, lawnmowers, ladders, garden furniture, machinery and long-handled tools can be organised along the building while still leaving a route through the centre. Shelving can make good use of the long walls, and there is enough space to incorporate a workbench if required.
Before ordering, I recommend measuring your largest equipment and planning the interior on paper. A 20ft-long building gives you considerable storage capacity, but good organisation is especially important in a 6ft-wide space if you want everything to remain easy to reach.
Can a 20×6 Shed Be Used as a Workshop?
For many DIY and hobby uses, yes. A 20ft x 6ft shed gives you plenty of length for a workbench, tools and storage, although the relatively narrow 6ft width means you should think carefully about bench depth and the amount of clear working space you need behind it.
The Fareham buildings are particularly relevant if you expect to spend regular periods inside because opening windows are included and optional lining and insulation are available. If you mainly want storage, those upgrades may not be necessary, so choose the specification based on how you genuinely intend to use the building.
Can You Get an Insulated 20×6 Shed?
Yes. All three Fareham models currently displayed on this page offer a full lining and insulation option for the walls and roof. This can make the building more comfortable if you intend to use it regularly for DIY, crafts or hobbies rather than simply storing garden equipment.
I would not automatically add insulation simply because it is available. A shed used for lawnmowers, bicycles and gardening tools has different requirements from a building where somebody expects to spend several hours at a time. The right specification is the one which suits the intended use.
Are These 20×6 Sheds Fitted for You?
Yes. Free professional assembly is included with Fareham buildings within the applicable Platinum delivery areas, subject to suitable site access and a correctly levelled base ready before installation.
You will still need to provide a firm and level foundation. Garden-building sizes are nominal, so always use the precise measurements supplied for your chosen configuration when preparing the base rather than relying solely on the description 20×6 shed.
What Should You Check Before Buying a 20×6 Shed?
After many years in this business, I would never recommend buying based on the headline dimensions and price alone. Look at the framing, cladding, flooring, roof, doors and windows and consider which optional features are genuinely useful to you.
The Fareham uses pressure-treated framing, cladding and flooring, substantial double doors and opening toughened-glass windows. Doors and windows can also be configured to suit. Those details matter because the practicality of a long 6×20 shed depends as much on access and layout as it does on floor space.
My Experience With Garden Buildings Goes Back to 1979
I’m Robin Antill, founder of 1st Choice Leisure Buildings. I left school at 15 and started in business in 1979 trading as Marina Sheds. Those early years were very hands-on, giving me practical experience of sheds, timber construction and dealing directly with customers who needed buildings which genuinely worked for them.
I sold Marina Sheds in 1990, although unfortunately I did not receive all the money which was due from the sale. I stayed in the garden-building industry and in 1992 we expanded into summerhouses, garages, garden rooms and log cabins. My son Craig joined me in 1992 after studying carpentry at Guildford College from 1990. His carpentry background brought further practical timber knowledge into the business. We sold Titan Garden Buildings in 1998 and in 2000 decided to retail quality garden buildings from selected manufacturers rather than being restricted to products from one source. That was when we formed 1st Choice Leisure Buildings.

Why Does My Experience Matter When Choosing a 20×6 Shed?
Having worked with garden buildings since 1979, I have learnt that bigger and more expensive do not automatically mean better. What matters is whether the building’s construction, doors, windows, layout and available options suit what you actually need it to do.

The main decision is whether the Apex, Pent, or Reverse Apex arrangement works best in your garden, and whether options such as insulation and a painted finish are worthwhile for how you intend to use your 20ft x 6ft shed.
