One of our Platinum supplier's recently installed Kingsclere 14 foot x 8 foot summer house. The customer upgraded to have the building fully insulated with double glazed PVCu windows and door frames with the building painted in Thorndown Agate Grey with Agate Grey PVCu windows and doors also. The customer also included black felt tiles for their roof and laminate floor in Light Grey Oak.

I would never order simply from the words “8×6” or “6 x 8”. Check the product drawing, exact external dimensions, door position, window arrangement and required base size. Those details determine how the building will work in your garden and how easily you can arrange furniture inside.
Why 8×6 Gives You More Choice Than Smaller Summerhouse Sizes
One of the attractions of the 8×6 size is the breadth of specification available. The current category includes conventional timber summerhouses, higher-specification Platinum buildings with insulation choices and premium fully insulated Royal garden rooms.
This means I would start by deciding what you want the building to do rather than starting with the price. Someone wanting somewhere pleasant to sit on spring and summer afternoons has very different requirements from somebody intending to work inside for several hours every weekday throughout winter.
Diamond, Platinum and Royal 8×6 Buildings
Diamond, Platinum or Royal 8×6 Building?
I would not automatically recommend the most expensive range. Diamond, Platinum, and Royal are intended to meet different requirements, and good value comes from matching the specification to how you will actually use the building.
Diamond 8×6 Summerhouses
I would start with Diamond if you want a traditional timber summerhouse for relaxing, reading, hobbies or entertaining during the warmer parts of the year. You get a proper timber leisure building with professional fitting and useful design choices without automatically paying for a fully insulated specification you may never need.
Platinum 8ft x 6ft Summer Houses
Platinum deserves closer consideration if you want a more substantial specification, greater flexibility or insulation. Selected Platinum models offer full insulation options, while other designs come fully insulated, making the range particularly interesting for extended-season leisure use, hobbies, or home working.
Royal 8×6 Garden Rooms
I would look towards Royal when regular year-round use is a genuine priority. These are premium, fully insulated garden rooms rather than conventional seasonal summerhouses, so they make more sense for customers wanting a proper garden office, studio, hobby room, or additional garden living space.

What Should You Look for When Buying an 8×6 Summerhouse?
After working with garden buildings since 1979, I still start with the construction rather than the photograph. Look carefully at the timber, framing, floor, roof, doors, windows, glazing, insulation where applicable, and exactly what is included in the price.
Two buildings with the same nominal 8ft x 6ft footprint can differ considerably in specification. That is particularly true in this category because you are comparing everything from conventional summerhouses to substantially insulated garden rooms.

Insulation, Office Use, Bespoke Options, Bases and Fitting
Can an 8×6 Summerhouse Be Insulated?
Yes, and the 8×6 size gives you particularly good choices. Full insulation options are available on selected Platinum buildings, while other Platinum designs and the Royal garden rooms offer fully insulated specifications aimed at customers wanting greater comfort and more regular use.
Insulation reduces the rate at which heat passes through the building; it does not create heat. If you expect to use your 8ft by 6ft summer house regularly during colder weather, you will normally still need a suitable heat source.
I would also look beyond the word “insulated”. Compare the walls, roof, floor, doors, windows, and glazing because the overall construction determines how suitable a building is for extended-season or year-round use. You can compare the dedicated insulated summerhouses if this is an important part of your decision.
Could an 8ft by 6ft Summer House Work as an Office?
Yes, but I would distinguish between occasional laptop use and a genuine full-time garden office. A conventional 8×6 timber summerhouse can be perfectly adequate for occasional work in pleasant weather, particularly if you need a quiet place for a few hours.
If you intend to work in the building every weekday throughout autumn and winter, I recommend an insulated Platinum or Royal building instead. Comfort depends on the whole specification, not simply whether a desk physically fits inside.
Can an 8×6 Summerhouse Be Made Bespoke?
Bespoke options are available on suitable models and can be particularly worthwhile at this size. Depending on the range, alterations may include changes to dimensions, doors, windows and other aspects of the design.

Absolutely. I have been saying for decades that a good garden building needs a good base. An 8×6 summerhouse requires a firm, flat, level foundation suited to the exact model you choose.
A poor base can affect how the building sits and can cause doors and windows to operate incorrectly. With insulated and higher-specification garden rooms, getting the foundation right becomes even more important.
Do not simply prepare an 8ft x 6ft rectangle from the nominal size. Check the manufacturer’s actual base dimensions, and allow for any installation access and roof overhang requirements before starting the foundation work.

Why My Garden Building Experience Matters
I’m Robin Antill, founder of 1st Choice Leisure Buildings, and I think customers should know who is behind the advice they are reading. My involvement with garden buildings started in 1979 and comes from manufacturing, selling, delivering and supplying timber buildings rather than simply selling products from a website.
I left school at 15 and started my own business in 1979 trading as Marina Sheds. In those early years, I built buildings, sold them, delivered them, and dealt directly with customers. That hands-on experience taught me to look beyond attractive photographs and concentrate on the timber, framing, floors, roofs, doors and overall construction.
From Marina Sheds to Titan Garden Buildings
I sold Marina Sheds in 1990. Unfortunately, I did not receive all of the money I was due from the sale. It was a difficult business lesson, but it certainly did not end my involvement with garden buildings.
By 1992 we had expanded beyond traditional garden sheds and added summerhouses, garages, garden rooms and log cabins. Because that broader range represented a very different direction, the business became Titan Garden Buildings.
My son Craig joined me in 1992 after studying carpentry at Guildford College from 1990. His carpentry training brought practical woodworking knowledge and an understanding of timber construction to the business, complementing my manufacturing and retail experience.
Forming 1st Choice Leisure Buildings
We sold Titan Garden Buildings in 1998. In 2000, Craig and I decided to use our combined experience to retail carefully selected quality garden buildings from other established manufacturers, rather than being restricted to products we manufactured ourselves. That decision led to the formation of 1st Choice Leisure Buildings.
That manufacturing background still influences the way we select and assess buildings today. We know to compare timber, framing, floors, roofs, doors, glazing and complete construction rather than judging a product simply from an attractive photograph or headline price.

What More Than 45 Years Has Taught Me About Choosing an 8×6 Building
The first thing I would decide is how often you intend to use the building. If you principally want somewhere attractive to relax on pleasant days, a traditional summerhouse may be all you need. If you intend to use it regularly throughout colder months, insulation and the overall specification become much more important.
The second thing is furniture. Mark out about eight feet by six feet on the floor and place the chairs, desk, table, or hobby equipment you intend to use inside that space. It costs nothing and gives you a far better sense of the finished room than simply looking at measurements online.
The third thing is orientation. A 6 x 8 summerhouse may have the same nominal dimensions, but the position of the frontage, doors, and windows can completely change how the space works.
Most importantly, buy the specification you genuinely require. The highest specification is not automatically the best value if you will never use its benefits, while buying too lightly for regular winter use can be equally disappointing.
