Summerhouse with Shed – Two Garden Buildings in One
If you are looking for a summerhouse with a shed, you are probably trying to solve two problems at the same time. You want an attractive garden room where you can relax, entertain, pursue a hobby or work from home. Still, you also need practical storage for tools, bicycles, garden furniture, a lawnmower and other outdoor equipment.
In my experience, a well-designed summer house and shed combination can be one of the best ways of achieving both without allowing two separate buildings to take over the garden. The summerhouse remains an attractive furnished space while the storage section keeps machinery, tools and equipment safely out of sight.
The important point is that these should be two genuinely usable areas rather than one room trying to perform two completely different jobs.
Why I Believe Experience Matters
I’m Robin Antill, founder of 1st Choice Leisure Buildings. I left school at 15 and eventually found my way into the garden building industry. In 1979 I started my own business trading as Marina Sheds, manufacturing and selling timber garden buildings.
Working directly with sheds taught me lessons that have remained useful throughout my working life. Two timber buildings can look remarkably similar in photographs while being very different when you examine the framing, cladding, floors, roofs, doors, windows and overall construction.
I sold Marina Sheds in 1990, although unfortunately I did not receive all the money that was due to me from the sale. It was certainly a difficult business lesson, but it did not end my involvement with garden buildings.
In 1992 we expanded beyond sheds and added summerhouses, garages, garden rooms and log cabins. The wider range meant the Marina Sheds name no longer properly described the business, so this change of direction led to the name Titan Garden Buildings.
My son Craig joined me in 1992 after studying carpentry at Guildford College from 1990. His carpentry training complemented the practical manufacturing and business experience I had gained, and we continued developing Titan together until selling the company in 1998.
In 2000, Craig and I decided to take a different approach and formed 1st Choice Leisure Buildings. Instead of being tied to products from a single manufacturer, we wanted to use our experience to retail quality garden buildings from selected manufacturers and give customers a genuine choice.
Today Craig runs the day-to-day business, and I support him as required. That manufacturing background is still important when I look at a summerhouse shed because I am interested in what sits behind the photograph: the quality of the timber, the construction and whether the design will actually work for the customer’s intended use.

What Is a Summerhouse Shed?
A summerhouse shed is a single garden building divided into two separate areas. The summerhouse section normally has glazing and is intended for relaxing, hobbies, entertaining or working, while the adjoining shed is enclosed for storage.
The two areas have a common overall structure but are separated internally by a partition. This means tools, bicycles and garden machinery do not need to share the same room as chairs, desks or other summerhouse furniture.
For gardens where space is limited, this arrangement can be particularly useful because you only need to accommodate one building footprint rather than finding suitable positions for a separate summerhouse and garden shed.
Why Choose a Summerhouse with a Side Shed?
A summerhouse with side shed is particularly useful when you want the storage area to be visually discreet. Depending on the design, the shed door can often be positioned on a side elevation while the attractive doors and windows of the summerhouse remain the main feature when viewed from your house or patio.
I like this arrangement because it lets each part of the building do its job properly. The leisure section can face the best view in the garden while access to tools, bicycles or a mower can be positioned where it is most convenient.
On selected bespoke models, the proportion of the building allocated to storage can also be altered. If you need only a narrow side shed for gardening equipment, there is little reason to sacrifice half your summerhouse to storage. Equally, somebody with several bicycles or substantial garden machinery may want a much larger compartment.
Modern Summerhouse with Shed Storage
A modern summerhouse with shed is a good choice if you want practical storage but prefer a cleaner, more contemporary appearance than a traditional garden building.
Pent roofs, broad glazed doors and windows, contemporary door arrangements and factory-applied colour finishes can give a summerhouse shed a much more architectural appearance. The storage compartment can then be incorporated into the overall design without making the building look like a conventional shed with another room attached.
When looking at modern designs, I would still concentrate on practical details as well as appearance. Think about where the storage door will open, whether bikes or machinery can pass through it easily, where furniture will sit in the summerhouse and which direction the windows face. Contemporary Summer House with Shed – What Should I Look For?
If you are choosing a contemporary summer house with shed, start with the amount of space you genuinely need in each section. Customers sometimes concentrate on the total building dimensions without considering how the internal partition divides the available floor area.
Mark the total dimensions out in your garden and then mark the proposed partition position as well. This gives you a much better idea of whether the leisure room and storage compartment will both be large enough. If bicycles are going into the shed, measure them. If you need to store a lawnmower, gardening machinery or large furniture, consider the door width and turning space. Likewise, place temporary chairs or a desk within the proposed summerhouse area to see whether the layout feels practical.
Diamond or Platinum Summerhouse Shed?

I would normally start with Diamond if your main priority is an attractive leisure summerhouse with a practical separate storage area. The range provides good flexibility over sizes and layouts without requiring you to pay for higher specifications you may not need.
Diamond is particularly worth considering if the building will mainly be used during spring, summer and milder weather, you require bespoke dimensions or a particular shed layout, or you want a well-made summerhouse and storage combination at a sensible price.
Platinum Summerhouse Sheds
I would look towards Platinum when you expect to spend longer periods inside the summerhouse, insulation is important, you want larger dimensions, or the building may also be used as a garden office, studio or regular hobby room.
The right range is not automatically the most expensive one. It is whichever gives you the construction, size and specification appropriate to what you actually intend to do.
Can a Summerhouse with Shed Be Insulated?
Yes. Insulation is available on selected summerhouse shed designs and can be worthwhile if you use the leisure section as an office, studio, hobby room, or for longer periods in colder weather. You should establish exactly which part of the building is being insulated. In most cases, your priority will be insulating the occupied summerhouse section rather than paying to heat and insulate an area used for storing gardening equipment.

Summerhouse Shed or Two Separate Buildings?
There is no single answer that suits every garden. A combined building usually makes sense when space is limited, you want a tidier, coordinated look, or the summerhouse and storage areas can conveniently share one location.
Separate buildings may make more sense if you have a large garden and want storage in a different location, perhaps close to a vegetable garden or access gate.

Can the Shed Section Be Made Bigger or Smaller?
On selected models, yes. Bespoke options can allow the partition position and overall dimensions to be altered so that the balance between leisure space and storage suits your requirements.
This is worth deciding before ordering. Think about what will actually live in the shed and what furniture will go inside the summerhouse. Designing the partition around those requirements is much easier than discovering afterwards that one side is unnecessarily large and the other is too small.
Can the Shed Door Be on the Side?
On suitable models and bespoke designs, the storage door can often be positioned on a side elevation. A summerhouse with a side shed can work particularly well when you want the glazed leisure area facing your house or garden while keeping the practical storage entrance less prominent.
Available door positions depend on the individual building and its construction, so it is something to discuss before ordering rather than assuming every model can be altered in the same way.
Quality Matters in Both Parts of the Building
A summerhouse shed is still a timber garden building, and I would judge it in the same way I have judged sheds and summerhouses throughout my working life. Look at the quality of the timber, framing, floor, roof, doors, glazing and general construction rather than concentrating entirely on appearance. The storage area needs a strong floor if it is going to carry garden machinery or other heavy equipment. Doors need to be practical for whatever you intend to move through them. The summerhouse section needs adequate glazing and a layout suitable for furniture.
There will nearly always be somebody prepared to advertise a cheaper garden building online, but price comparisons are only meaningful when the specifications are genuinely comparable.
Summerhouse Shed or Garden Room With Shed?
If the occupied part of the building will mainly be used for relaxing, entertaining or hobbies in milder weather, a summerhouse shed can be an excellent choice. If your main requirement is a dedicated home office or a room you expect to occupy regularly throughout the year, it is also worth comparing a higher-specification garden room and shed combination.
