Choosing the Right Garden Room With Shed
When choosing a garden room with shed, I recommend starting with how you will actually use both parts of the building. I’m Robin Antill, founder of 1st Choice Leisure Buildings. After working with garden buildings since 1979, I have found that getting the size and proportions right is often more important than choosing a building simply because you like its appearance.
Start with the storage section. Make a list of what needs to go inside and measure larger items such as bicycles, lawnmowers, barbecues and garden furniture. Allow for shelving, door access and enough space to move things in and out. Then plan the garden room in the same way. A home office needs room for a desk, chair and storage, while a gym, studio or hobby room may require more open floor space.
Garden Office and Shed Combined
A garden office and shed combined is particularly useful when your new office will occupy the space where an existing shed currently stands. Rather than losing valuable storage or finding room for a second building, you can have a dedicated office and separate shed within one coordinated structure. The separation is important. Your desk, computer and office furniture remain in a clean working environment, while bicycles, tools, lawnmowers and garden equipment have their own storage area and external access. How Much Space Should the Shed Take Up?
There is no ideal proportion because storage requirements vary considerably. Someone storing two bicycles and a few garden tools needs much less room than somebody with a lawnmower, garden machinery, furniture and shelving. I recommend working backwards from what you need to store rather than choosing an arbitrary shed size.
Do the same with the main room. If you want a garden room with side shed for home working, roughly position your desk, chair, cupboards, and any additional seating before deciding how to divide the space. A generous shed is of little benefit if it leaves you with an office which feels cramped every working day.
It is also worth thinking a few years ahead. Garden buildings often change purpose, and storage requirements tend to increase. Today’s office may eventually become a studio, hobby room or family space, while another bicycle, barbecue or piece of garden equipment may appear. If your garden and budget allow, leave some flexibility rather than designing both areas around the absolute minimum you need today.
Garden Room With Side Shed or Two Separate Buildings?
A garden room with side shed can make particularly good use of a smaller garden because the room and storage requirements are incorporated under one roof. It can also look more coordinated than positioning a garden office and an unrelated shed alongside one another.
However, a combination building is not automatically the right choice. If you already have a sound shed elsewhere in the garden, or want your storage and garden room in completely different positions, separate buildings may suit you better. I would choose a combi because you genuinely need both spaces together rather than simply because the option is available.

Compare Insulation and the Complete Specification
If the garden room will be used regularly throughout autumn and winter, insulation and overall construction become much more important. Different ranges use different wall, roof and floor specifications, so compare what you are actually getting rather than relying on the word “insulated” or judging from photographs alone. The shed section does not normally require the same internal specification as the occupied room. If it is being used for normal garden storage, there is often little benefit in paying to give bicycles, tools and a lawnmower the same insulated finish as an office where somebody may spend several hours each day.
Two garden rooms with sheds can look remarkably similar online but be quite different when you examine how they are made. Compare wall construction, framing, floor, roof, glazing, doors, insulation, internal finish, treatment, and installation, as well as the overall price. Also establish exactly what is included, as a lower advertised price is not necessarily better value if essential items or services have to be added later. Don’t Overlook the Base, Access and Electrics
A quality garden room still needs a suitable firm and level foundation. Establish what your chosen building requires before arranging the base rather than assuming every garden room needs the same foundation. Check delivery access as well. Gates, narrow passages, arches, steps, walls and sharp corners can affect installation because building sections still need to reach the final position. Advice Based on Garden Building Experience Since 1979
I started my first garden building business, Marina Sheds, in 1979 after leaving school at 15. I sold Marina Sheds in 1990, although unfortunately I did not receive all the money due from the sale. By 1992 we had expanded beyond traditional sheds into summerhouses, garages, garden rooms and log cabins, which led to a change of name to Titan Garden Buildings.
My son Craig joined me in 1992 after studying carpentry at Guildford College from 1990.
