When choosing a summer building, you need to check the specifications to ensure it will have the strength to last. So always check out the thickness of the timber, whether it’s made from redwood or the cheap inferior whitewood, how thick the framing is etc. Are the doors and windows joinery made, meaning they will last a long time? Does it has toughened glass for safety or imperfect horticultural glass, plastic or perspex? All important questions.
On many of the buildings available on the web, you will find that they will deliver them to your house and leave them for you to build. You can save a little money this way, but you will have to build it yourself. That’s OK if you are a good DIYer, but it will still be hard work. To make the most of your new building, it’s a good idea to have it
lined and insulated to get the most use out of you all year round. Doing so will keep the building cooler in summer and warmer in winter. It’s possible to do this yourself if you feel confident. However, there is an option to do this for you on all the
Platinum buildings. It can be seen as a luxury, but you will be glad you did on those hot summer days or cold winter days. Just contact us, and we will arrange a free quote for you.

Before deciding on a new 8×8 summer building for your garden, you should always do your homework (sorry!) as it’s very easy to be taken in with a flashy website leaflet or colour brochure. Ever since our 8×8 summerhouse display site was opened in 2003 we have had a vast array of visitors who are able to view the quality of these buildings which gives them peace of mind. We have, since, also added playhouses, summer houses, garages, greenhouses and various steel, concrete, wood and plastic buildings and now have about 100 buildings for viewing.
However at the weekend there was one famous visitor to the garden centre and his name was Churchill. No – not the irritating dog on the insurance ads but the awe inspiring World War Two leader, Winston Churchill. At least a look alike. This truly Great Britain was at the garden centre along with various other policemen of the time as well as other ‘Top Brass’.
This was in connection with the 1940’s revival organisation ‘The Law At War’ who staged their World War 2 Civilian Police re-enactment on Sunday alongside our 8×8 summerhouses, no less. With their authentic police station designed to show what a typical police station would have looked like and appeared to be very realistic.
Winston Churchill, who arguably was the greatest leader of our country, would have been very pleased to see the range of 8ft x 8ft summer building and many others which can be used to aid production on the land. It’s believed that Churchill said that without the efforts of the farmers and the people on the ground that our country could have been starved into defeat. The garden was an essential part of the war effort and even afterwards it played a major part of the lives of many.
Some wag on Facebook quoted ‘We shall build them on the beaches’ which probably fits 1st Choice Leisure Buildings ethos which translates into ‘Nothing shall defeat us’ so if you are looking for a bespoke 8×8 summer houses they can help. Thinking about it if they were built on the beach they could be used a beach huts – very popular I understand.
After the war digging and growing in the garden was still an essential part of everyday life. All sorts of buildings were created from any materials going. Even old Anderson shelters were implemented for usage as sheds. Besides the garden the growth in allotments at this time also steadily grew giving families even more opportunity to supplement their family budget.
When you look at the range of garden buildings available today they would have been staggered by the choice and variety available. However if you take a look at the size of the allotments in Eastenders you will find that after about 10 minutes all the work would have been done so even more opportunity to socialise. The 8 x 8 summerhouse in the soap features quite strongly in many story lines. In real life you would expect a decent size of ground for your produce and not the shed size plots shown in Eastenders. Anybody would think that it’s a story.
Even nowadays it’s important for the garden to play a part in the household budget so now is the time to ‘Dig for Victory’ or at least dig to reduce the household budget. By doing so you will be doing Britain proud and Winston Churchill would be smiling down at our great country.
