Is an 8×6 Garden Office Big Enough?
For one person, an 8×6 garden office can provide a very practical working space. There is normally enough room for a desk, office chair and a modest amount of storage. However, the exact usable space will depend on the individual building, internal dimensions and position of the doors and windows.
I would not choose the size by measuring your desk alone. Allow room to pull your chair back, move around comfortably, open drawers and cupboards, and accommodate monitors, shelving, or a printer. If you need substantial storage, a large desk or space for two people, I normally consider a larger garden office before ordering.
Planning an 8ft x 6ft Garden Room
An 8ft x 6ft garden room has a nominal footprint of 48 square feet, or approximately 2.4m x 1.8m. That makes it compact enough for many gardens while providing genuinely useful internal space for working, hobbies or relaxing.
Before ordering, mark an 8ft x 6ft footprint on the ground and think about both the internal layout and the space remaining around the building. Remember that nominal dimensions and exact external measurements can vary between models, so always use the dimensions supplied for the individual product when preparing the site and base.
8×6 Garden Rooms for Working From Home
If you mainly need a desk, chair, computer and some compact storage, an 8×6 room can make an excellent one-person home office. At this size, I pay particular attention to the position of doors and windows because there is less spare floor and wall space to waste than in a larger office.
Think about where your computer screen will face, where electrical sockets will be required and whether shelving or cupboards will restrict movement. Getting the layout right before ordering can make a relatively compact room feel considerably more practical in everyday use.
Should an 8×6 Garden Office Be Insulated?
If you intend to work in the building regularly throughout the year, consider an insulated specification. Insulation helps improve comfort, but it should never be considered in isolation. Look at the walls, floor, roof, doors and glazing together and compare exactly what each model includes.

My Experience With Garden Buildings Since 1979
I’m Robin Antill, founder of 1st Choice Leisure Buildings. I left school at 15 and started my own business in 1979 trading as Marina Sheds. I learnt about garden buildings hands-on by making them, selling them, delivering them and dealing directly with the customers who would use them.

Why Specification Matters on a Compact Garden Office
After working with garden buildings since 1979, I’ve learnt that two 8×6 rooms can look very similar in photographs while being quite different when you examine the framing, cladding, flooring, roof, doors, glazing and insulation.
This matters particularly when the building is going to become a working office. The cheapest option is not automatically the best value, and the most expensive is not automatically the right choice either. The sensible approach is to decide how often you will use the office and then choose a specification appropriate for that use.
8×6 or 6×8 Garden Room – Is There a Difference?
The descriptions 8×6 garden room and 6×8 garden room can refer to the same nominal footprint, but the orientation of the building may affect which side contains the doors and windows. Always check the individual product drawings and exact dimensions rather than relying only on the size name.
Door and window positions are particularly important on a compact building because they determine where desks, shelves and other furniture can be placed. Selected ranges also offer bespoke layouts or alternative door and window positions if a standard arrangement does not suit your garden or working setup.
Preparing the Base for an 8×6 Garden Room
A good garden room needs a firm, flat and level foundation suitable for the particular building. Don’t prepare a base based on the nominal 8×6 description alone, as the exact footprint can differ between models. Use the manufacturer’s precise dimensions for the building you order.
