How is a concrete garage actually built?
How to build a concrete garage is something we’re often asked, and there’s a lot more to it than simply putting concrete panels together. Every part of the build has its place, from preparing the base to fitting the roof, and it all plays a part in creating a garage that’s built to last.
At Lidget Compton they have spent more than 40 years refining the way they build their garages. This isn’t intended to be a step-by-step guide, but it does explain how one of their Apex garages comes together and answers some of the questions we’re asked most often about the construction process.
General Guide To Building a Lidget Concrete Garage
Installing a sectional concrete garage is a straightforward process when it’s carried out by experienced installers and the site has been prepared correctly. Every installation starts with checking the concrete base, as this is the foundation that supports the entire building. The base must be level, square and built to the correct size to ensure every concrete panel fits exactly as intended. Taking the time to get this right avoids problems later and helps the garage perform as it should for many years.
Once the base has been approved, the reinforced concrete wall panels are carefully positioned, aligned and securely bolted together to form the main structure. The roof framework is then fitted before the roof sheets are fixed into place, creating a strong, weatherproof building. Garage doors, windows, fascias, guttering and any optional extras are installed as the build progresses, with every component checked for alignment and operation.
Although many people ask how to build a concrete garage themselves, the size and weight of the concrete sections mean specialist lifting equipment and experienced installers are essential. Correct installation also ensures the roof, doors and wall panels work together as designed, providing maximum strength and durability.
A professionally installed concrete garage can be completed in a single day, depending on the size and specification. With a properly prepared base and skilled installation, you’ll have a secure, low-maintenance garage that will provide reliable storage, workshop space or vehicle protection for decades.
It’s All in the Foundation
A good garage starts with a good base. Before installation, the concrete base must be level, square and built to the correct size. This provides a solid foundation for the garage and ensures every panel fits together properly.
Our installers will check the base before work begins. If the base has been prepared to our specification, the installation can go ahead without delay.
Garage Construction
The installation starts by setting out the position of the garage on the base. The rear corner panels are erected first before the remaining side, and back panels are added. Each reinforced concrete panel is bolted securely to the next, creating a strong, rigid structure.
If the garage includes windows or a personnel door, these are fitted as the walls are assembled.
Once all the wall panels are in place, the main structure of the garage is complete.
Garage Roof Trusses
With the walls erected, the roof framework is fitted.
Steel roof trusses are fixed across the building to provide strength and support. Timber roof runners are then installed to carry the roof sheets.
At this stage, the building becomes even more rigid and is ready for the roof covering.
Roof Sheets
The roof sheets are fixed to the timber runners using purpose-made fixings.
Once all the sheets are fitted, the ridge sections are installed to complete the roof. Flashings are also fitted where required to help keep the garage weatherproof.
By this stage, the garage is fully covered and protected from the elements.
Main Door(s) Fitting
The front of the garage is fitted once the roof structure is in place.
The garage door frame and front posts are positioned and securely fixed before the garage door is installed and adjusted. Whether you’ve chosen an up-and-over door or another option from our range, everything is checked to ensure it opens and closes smoothly.
The fascias are then fitted to complete the front elevation.
Sealing and Finishing
As the final part of the installation, all panel joints are sealed using a flexible mastic sealant to help prevent water ingress.
Where required, a sand and cement fillet is applied around the outside of the garage to seal the base.
Before leaving site, our installation team carries out a final inspection to make sure everything has been fitted correctly, and the garage is ready for use.
