Choosing a 9×7 Shed

A 9×7 shed gives you a very useful amount of garden storage without moving into a much larger workshop. The nominal 9ft x 7ft footprint provides around 63 square feet of floor area, although exact external and internal dimensions vary by building. I’m Robin Antill, founder of 1st Choice Leisure Buildings, and sheds are where my working life in garden buildings began in 1979. After more than 45 years in the trade, I still believe the right shed should be chosen by looking carefully at its construction, layout and what you genuinely need it to do rather than simply buying the cheapest building of approximately the right size.

A 9ft x 7ft shed gives you enough depth to combine storage along the walls with a sensible central access area. It can work well for garden tools, bikes, lawn equipment, DIY equipment and shelving, but I would still measure the larger items you intend to store before ordering rather than assuming everything will fit comfortably.

Is a 7×9 Shed the Same as a 9×7 Shed?

You may see a 9×7 shed described as a 7×9 shed or 9ft x 7ft shed. These descriptions can refer to broadly the same nominal footprint with the dimensions reversed, but always check which measurement represents the frontage and which represents the depth. Door position, windows and roof orientation can all influence how practical the building is, so use the exact dimensions and layout of your chosen model when planning its position and preparing the base.

The Four 9×7 Sheds Currently Shown on This Page

The current page displays four products: Diamond Chichester Pent, Woodgate Reverse Apex, Diamond Barnham Apex and Diamond Barnham Pent. All four have published size ranges that cover a 9ft x 7ft requirement, so I would focus on these rather than introducing unrelated shed ranges.

All four currently show free fitting and a colour paint finish option. The Chichester Pent and Woodgate Reverse Apex also offer bespoke options, giving you additional flexibility when a standard arrangement doesn’t quite suit your garden or storage needs.

Diamond Chichester Pent 9×7 Shed

The Diamond Chichester Pent has a published range from 4ft x 4ft to 24ft x 12ft, so a 9×7 shed sits comfortably within its available sizes. It currently shows free fitting, a colour paint finish option and bespoke options.

The single-slope pent roof may suit you if you prefer that appearance or need the roof arrangement to work alongside a particular wall, fence or boundary. More importantly, think about the door and window positions and how much uninterrupted wall space you need inside.

The bespoke options can be genuinely useful. Moving a door or window may improve access or give you a better wall for shelving. I wouldn’t alter a standard design simply because you can, but if a practical change makes the building easier to use, it is worth considering.

Woodgate Reverse Apex 9×7 Shed

The Woodgate Reverse Apex also has a published range from 4ft x 4ft to 24ft x 12ft and currently shows free fitting, a colour paint finish option and bespoke options. Its reverse apex layout provides a different arrangement from the Chichester Pent and the Barnham buildings.

On a 9ft x 7ft shed, door orientation can make a noticeable difference. Consider the direction you will approach the building from, which walls you want available for shelving, and where larger equipment needs to stand. The Woodgate’s bespoke flexibility can be useful where the standard arrangement doesn’t quite suit the garden.

Diamond Barnham Apex and Barnham Pent

The Diamond Barnham Apex and Barnham Pent have published ranges from 6ft x 4ft to 28ft x 12ft, so both genuinely cover a 9ft x 7ft shed requirement. Both currently show free fitting and a colour paint finish option.

The main difference is roof style. The Barnham Apex gives you the traditional pitched-roof appearance, while the Barnham Pent provides a single-slope roof. Which one is right for you comes down to appearance, position in the garden and how you intend to use the building.

The Barnham range information refers to double doors on sizes 8ft and over. If door width is particularly important because you need to move bikes, machinery or other larger equipment in and out, I would check the exact door specification of your chosen 9×7 configuration before ordering.

Why My Experience With Sheds Matters

I think customers should know who is behind the advice they are reading. I left school at 15 and started my own garden building business in 1979, trading as Marina Sheds. I was hands-on from the beginning, manufacturing and selling timber sheds, so I learnt about garden buildings by actually working with timber and dealing directly with customers rather than simply reading specifications in a catalogue.

That practical manufacturing background still influences how I judge a shed today. An attractive door, window or paint finish naturally catches your eye, but I also look at the timber, framing, floor, roof, glazing and how the complete building has been put together. Two sheds can look very similar in photographs and still be quite different when you examine their construction properly.

I sold Marina Sheds in 1990. Unfortunately, I didn’t receive all the money I was due from the sale. It was a difficult business lesson, but it certainly didn’t end my involvement with garden buildings.

In 1992 we expanded beyond sheds and added summerhouses, garages, garden rooms and log cabins. Marina Sheds no longer properly described the wider business, so the change in direction also meant a change of name, and we became Titan Garden Buildings.

My son Craig joined me in 1992 after studying carpentry at Guildford College from 1990. His carpentry training brought additional practical woodworking and timber-construction knowledge into a business already built around manufacturing and selling garden buildings.

We sold Titan Garden Buildings in 1998 and, in 2000, Craig and I decided to take a different approach. Rather than manufacturing everything ourselves or being tied to one source, we wanted to use our experience to select quality garden buildings from manufacturers we trusted and give customers a genuine choice. That decision led us to form 1st Choice Leisure Buildings.

Craig now runs the day-to-day business, and I continue to support him and the team as required. I’ve been involved with sheds and garden buildings since 1979, and I believe that experience matters because I’ve seen the industry from both sides: first manufacturing and selling timber buildings ourselves and later comparing products from different manufacturers for our customers.

What More Than 45 Years Has Taught Me About Sheds

More than 45 years around sheds has taught me that dimensions and price don’t tell you everything. A 9×7 shed is large enough for construction quality, framing, floor, roof, doors and fittings to deserve proper attention. I would rather see somebody choose the right building once than save a little initially and regret the decision afterwards.

Construction Matters on a 9×7 Shed

The current 9×7 range highlights quality redwood deal timber rather than cheaper whitewood, with at least nominal 2×2 vertical framing, timber floor and roof construction and toughened glass on the Diamond buildings shown here. These are exactly the sorts of practical details I encourage customers to examine rather than choosing a shed solely from an attractive photograph or headline price.

Specifications can still vary between individual models and configurations, so compare the precise building you are considering rather than assuming every 9ft x 7ft shed is constructed in the same way. Look carefully at the framing, timber, floor, roof, doors and glazing as well as the appearance.

Making the Most of a 9×7 Shed

A 9×7 shed gives you useful room for garden tools, bikes, lawn equipment, gardening supplies and other outdoor items while still leaving scope for shelving and wall storage. The seven-foot depth makes the building easier to organise than a very narrow shed and can also leave room for a small practical DIY or hobby area.

Hooks and shelves can make good use of the walls while keeping the centre clear. I would avoid filling every available inch because a shed is much more useful when you can reach equipment at the back without unloading everything in front of it.

Bespoke Options on the Chichester and Woodgate

The Diamond Chichester Pent and Woodgate Reverse Apex currently show bespoke options. On a 7×9 shed, changing a door or window position may create a longer uninterrupted wall for shelves or improve access from the part of the garden where you naturally approach the building.

I would decide what needs to go inside first and then think about whether a bespoke alteration adds genuine practical value. Customisation should solve a problem rather than add another option to the order.

Free Fitting on the Current 9×7 Sheds

All four products currently displayed show free fitting. The wider category information also states that qualifying wooden sheds are delivered and assembled free of charge, subject to delivery area. I think professional fitting is worthwhile because even a well-made shed needs to be assembled correctly if the floor, roof and doors are going to perform as intended.

Free fitting still requires suitable access and an appropriate firm, flat and level base. If the route from the road into your garden is narrow, restricted or awkward, please tell us before ordering rather than waiting until fitting day.

Get the Base Right

A 9ft x 7ft shed needs proper support across its complete footprint. An uneven or unsuitable base can affect how the building sits and how well the doors operate, so getting the groundwork right is one of the most important parts of preparing for your shed.

If you need help with the site, take a look at our garden building base and additional services. It is far better to deal with an unsuitable base before the shed arrives than to try to correct problems afterwards.

Colour Paint Finish Options

All four sheds currently displayed show a colour paint finish option. A building around 9ft x 7ft is large enough to be a noticeable feature in the garden, so choosing a finish that works with your house, fencing and planting can make a real difference to the overall appearance.

Colours shown online can vary because of lighting, photography and different screens. If a precise shade is particularly important, check the current colour information or order a sample before making your final choice.

See Sheds Before You Buy

I have encouraged customers to inspect sheds before buying for many years. Photographs can show style and colour, but they cannot completely tell you how substantial a floor feels, how a door operates or what the timber and framing are like when you see them close up.

You are welcome to visit our Surrey garden building display site at Sutton Green, near Guildford and Woking. We can’t display every model in every possible size, but seeing representative sheds allows you to compare construction and finishes before making your decision.

Take your time, look closely and ask questions. We don’t believe in high-pressure selling. I started my first shed business in 1979, and I still believe that seeing what you’re buying and understanding the specification are two of the best ways to make an informed decision.

Which 9×7 Shed Should You Choose?

If you want a pent roof together with bespoke flexibility, look closely at the Diamond Chichester Pent. If you prefer a reverse apex layout and bespoke options, consider the Woodgate Reverse Apex. If you want to compare traditional apex and pent roof styles within the Barnham range, look at the Barnham Apex and Barnham Pent.

There isn’t one best 9×7 shed for everybody. The right choice depends on roof style, door arrangement, bespoke flexibility, construction and how you actually intend to use the building. Start with those practical requirements rather than price alone, and the decision becomes much easier.

My Advice Before You Order

Mark out approximately 9ft x 7ft in your garden, measure the items you intend to store and check the precise external dimensions, door arrangement and window positions of your preferred model. Make sure you have a suitable firm, flat, and level base, and adequate access from the road to where the building will stand.

If you’re unsure which 9ft x 7ft shed is right for you, please contact us. Tell Craig, me or one of the team what you need to store, how much room you have and where the shed will stand. We’ll help you compare the four actual products shown on this page and choose the building that makes sense for you.
