Is a 5m x 3m Log Cabin the Right Size for Your Garden?
A 5m x 3m log cabin provides a useful amount of internal space while retaining a relatively modest 3m depth. The 5m length can make it especially practical if you want separate areas for working, seating, hobbies or storage rather than one undivided room. Around fifteen square metres nominally gives considerably more flexibility than smaller cabins. Still, I always recommend marking the building out in your garden and checking the exact external and internal measurements of the individual model because cabins within this category vary around the nominal 5m x 3m size.
My Advice When Choosing a 5m x 3m Garden Cabin
After working with timber garden buildings since 1979, my advice with a cabin around this size is to plan the internal room before choosing the final design. The 5m length can be very useful, but doors and windows need to be in the right places if you want a desk at one end and seating, storage or equipment at the other. Mark out your furniture first, then compare the wall construction, glazing, floor, roof, base requirements and insulation. You can read my log cabin buyer’s guide or compare our complete range of log cabins and garden log cabins.
Why My Experience Matters
I’m Robin Antill, founder of 1st Choice Leisure Buildings. I left school at 15 and started Marina Sheds in 1979. I sold Marina Sheds in 1990, although unfortunately I did not receive all the money due from the sale. In 1992, we expanded into summerhouses, garages, garden rooms, and log cabins, and changed the name to Titan Garden Buildings. My son Craig joined us that year after studying carpentry at Guildford College from 1990. We sold Titan Garden Buildings in 1998 and formed 1st Choice Leisure Buildings in 2000 so we could retail carefully selected quality garden buildings from other manufacturers. Craig now runs the day-to-day business, and I continue to support him and the team as required.
Things to Check Before Ordering a 3 x 5 Log Cabin
Check the Individual Cabin Dimensions
A 3 x 5 log cabin or 5m x 3m log cabin is a useful category description, but not every cabin shown here measures exactly 5.0m x 3.0m. Some models are slightly wider, narrower or deeper, and others are available across several sizes. Always use the measurements stated on the individual product page when checking whether a cabin will fit and when preparing its base.
Plan How You Will Use the 5m Length
The longer dimension is one of the main advantages of this size. You can use one end as a work or hobby area and the other for seating, storage or exercise equipment. Marking out the proposed internal dimensions before ordering can help you judge whether the room will work for one purpose or several.
Check Door and Window Positions
The position of doors and windows can have a major effect on a long rectangular cabin. Consider where desks, sofas, cupboards, or equipment will stand, and how people will move through the room. Two cabins of similar overall size can offer very different usable layouts because of the position and width of the openings.
Prepare a Firm and Level Base
A log cabin of this size requires a firm, stable and level foundation suitable for the individual building and ground conditions. A poorly prepared base can affect the structure and how correctly the doors and windows operate. We can also arrange additional garden building services where required.
Consider Insulation and Services Early
If you intend to use your cabin regularly as a garden office, studio, gym or hobby room during colder weather, consider insulation and electrical requirements before ordering. Review the complete specification, including walls, floor, roof, glazing, and intended heating. You can also compare our insulated log cabins.
5m x 3m Log Cabin Questions and Answers
How big is a 5m x 3m log cabin in feet?
Five metres is approximately 16 ft 5 in and three metres is approximately 9 ft 10 in, so a true 5m x 3m log cabin is roughly 16 ft 5 in x 9 ft 10 in. Individual product dimensions vary, so use the exact measurements given for the cabin rather than the converted category size when preparing your site and base.
How much floor space does a 5m x 3m log cabin have?
A theoretical 5m x 3m footprint covers 15 square metres, or approximately 161 square feet. Actual usable internal floor space will be smaller because the walls take up part of the footprint, and several cabins in this category differ slightly from an exact 5m x 3m measurement.
Is a 3 x 5 log cabin the same as a 5m x 3m log cabin?
A 3 x 5 log cabin can refer to the same nominal footprint with the dimensions written in the opposite order where metres are understood. However, the first measurement may sometimes indicate the frontage, so check the individual product plan to confirm the cabin orientation and the position of its doors and windows.
Is a 5m x 3m garden cabin big enough for an office?
For many home offices, yes. A cabin around 5m x 3m can provide room for a substantial desk, office storage and additional seating while still leaving useful circulation space. Depending on the precise internal dimensions and openings, it may also suit two workstations or an office at one end with a meeting or relaxation area at the other.
What else can a 5m x 3m log cabin be used for?
A garden cabin around this size can work as a studio, hobby room, gym, craft room, music space, reading room, garden retreat or general leisure room. Its 5m length makes it particularly useful if you want to combine different activities within the same building without moving to a much deeper cabin.
Do these 5m x 3m garden cabins include floors and double glazing?
The current category features double-glazed cabins with wooden floors, although the exact glazing system, floor construction and other specifications vary between individual ranges. Some products are also available in several sizes, so always check the detailed product specification and your quotation to confirm exactly what is included.
Can a 5m x 3m log cabin be professionally installed and insulated?
Professional installation and insulation options are available on suitable cabins within the category. With a larger building, professional installation can be particularly useful if you would prefer experienced fitters to assemble it. At the same time, insulation is worth considering if you plan to occupy the cabin regularly during colder parts of the year.
Can I see a 5m x 3m garden cabin before buying?
You can visit our Surrey showrooms near Guildford and Woking to inspect representative garden buildings and discuss your requirements with our experienced team. Seeing a full-size cabin makes it much easier to judge internal space, doors, windows, timber construction, and finishes than relying on photographs alone. If seeing an exact 5m x 3m model is essential, contact us before travelling to confirm which cabin models and sizes are currently on display.
A Final Word From Robin
After more than four decades around garden buildings, a cabin around 5m x 3m needs to be chosen based on how you intend to use its extra length. It can provide an excellent office, studio, hobby room or leisure space, but check the exact dimensions, plan the furniture and openings, consider the base and insulation and compare the complete specification before deciding. If you are unsure which cabin around this size is right for your garden, visit our showrooms or speak to our team and we will help you compare the options.
