What Is An Insulated Garden Room?
Your garden is the perfect place for a standalone building, and it can be used for a range of purposes, whether you’re looking for an insulated garden office or the ideal guest room with an element of privacy and comfort.
These specially constructed rooms include professionally installed insulation to protect them from the best and worst of the British climate.
By minimising heat loss in winter and reducing heat gain in summer, insulated garden rooms provide a versatile solution for homeowners seeking functional additional space without requiring extensive renovations.
Subsequently, they are cosy and secluded outdoor spaces ideal for entertaining or working any time of year, a welcome addition to most people’s homes. Add in the coloured paint stain option transforms the appearance as well.
What Are The Benefits Of Insulated Garden Rooms?
There are as many benefits to an insulated garden room as you could want. For one, they provide an exceptional level of comfort in all seasons. In winter, the cold and rain stay outside where they belong.
In summer, you can shelter from the pulsating sun and heat while enjoying the sights and sounds of nature.
Furthermore, they are energy-efficient and eco-friendly. The insulation means you’ll never need to spend as much as you might on heating or cooling the room. This cuts your electricity bills and your carbon footprint.
Finally, insulated garden rooms are endlessly versatile. They can become the ideal home garden office with a desk and a laptop, or an easy chair can transform them into a relaxation and meditation space.
Alternatively, it can become a home office, gym, guest room, or family hangout where you watch films or sports or chat in the most pleasant surroundings.
Should I Buy A Pre-insulated Building Or Add Insulation Myself?
Insulation is only beneficial as long as it is done to perfection. One misstep can render it useless. We’d be the last people to discourage DIY, but it is best to trust the professionals regarding insulation.
Choosing a pre-insulated garden room means choosing a high standard of insulation work, saving you time and money. With professional installation, you can be confident in the comfort and quality of your new space, giving you peace of mind and the best value for your investment.
Whether you DIY or let someone else DIY for you is always up to you. However, for the sake of clarity, it makes sense to leave it to professionals.
It may seem like better value to do the work yourself, but buying the summerhouse pre-insulated will guarantee a job done to industry standards—and repairs to the insulation, if necessary.
Adding the insulation after-market will inevitably take up much of your time and effort, which could be better used elsewhere. So, while we reiterate that the choice is yours, we have an opinion on this matter and believe it is better to let the pros handle the work.

Are There Any Other Options Other Than DIY Insulation? And HOW Much Will It Cost
Our 45 years in the timber garden building industry means we can offer an optional insulation service for all our Platinum range of buildings, where they would be insulated and lined. By taking up this option, your new garden building can be used all year round and not just in the warmer months.
The building would be insulated with foil-backed insulation, which enhances the temperature within the building. To suit your needs and requirements, you have a choice of internal claddings, including plywood, board, or T&G. Internal timber trims are added to ensure an excellent cosmetic finish.
Is It Included – Or Is It Expensive To Add Insulation To My Garden Building?
On the Royal and Regent order form insulation is included. On the Platinum order form, you can see the cost for the insulation on there so you can decide before ordering whether it will be cost-effective for you. We can also insulate the floor, but you must call to get this cost. You can use your new garden building all year round by deciding on the lining and insulation option.
However, all Royal and Regent garden office rooms come fully insulated as standard with no extra charge. Likewise the Platinum Fleet and Odiham garden rooms include the cost of insulation.
How much better would that be for you? Only you can decide. But it will make it an even more attractive proposition when the weather could be better. How you use these extra days and hours is up to you, but going down and having some ‘me’ time is worth it. It will take a little while to decide if this is an excellent opportunity for you – a great leisure building for all the family.

Are Garden Offices Better Than In-home Office Spaces?
If you need a dedicated space to support your WFH lifestyle, deciding between in-house or garden structures is a personal choice. Likewise, you will avoid facing the same distractions as working in a busy household or losing a guest room for the office transformation.
-
Can I Run A Business From A Garden Office?
Running a business from a garden office is viable for many entrepreneurs. With the advancement of technology, remote work is increasingly feasible, making a garden office a practical space to conduct business operations. The key advantages include cost savings, a peaceful work environment, and the opportunity to separate work life from home life. However, it is essential to consider factors such as internet connectivity, utility access, and local regulations before setting up a garden office for business purposes. With careful planning and consideration, running a business from a garden office can be a successful and efficient choice for many entrepreneurs.

Can Neighbours Object To A Garden Room?
Neighbours can object to a garden room if it breaches planning regulations, impacts their privacy, or causes excessive noise or disruption. Do I Need Planning Permission For a Garden Building
Yes, you may need planning permission. The need for planning permission depends on the size and location of the building, as well as local regulations. It's important to check with your local planning authority to determine if you need permission before proceeding with the construction. Failure to obtain the necessary planning permission could result in enforcement action, so it's crucial to ensure compliance with regulations before starting the project. Take a look at our planning permission page for more guidance.
-
Do I Need Planning Permissions?
Usually, garden rooms don't require planning permission as long as they meet specific criteria. This includes being a single story with a maximum height of 2.5 metres and must be located within two metres of a boundary.
However, different restrictions and permissions may be required if your garden room is larger, situated in a protected area or intended for business use.
Essentially, different areas have different requirements in terms of planning permissions, so we recommend checking with your local planning authority or consulting with our experts to ensure that your garden room is in compliance with all regulations.
-
How Big Can A Garden Room Be Without Planning Permission?
In the UK, a
garden room can be up to 50% of the total land area surrounding the original property without requiring planning permission. This means that if you have a 100-square-metre garden, your building can be up to 50 square metres to be considered permissible under the permitted development rules. It's important to note that this percentage may vary depending on specific local regulations, so it's advisable to consult with your local planning authority before proceeding with construction.

How to Insulate a Garden Room?
Insulating a garden room will make it useful all year round and comfortable.
1st Choice Leisure Buildings provides many garden room options that have insulation already included, but if you're looking to enhance or add insulation to a garden room that's already built, here's how to do it:
- Roof: Insulate your roof using rigid insulation boards or insulation rolls, making sure to maintain proper ventilation to prevent condensation.
- Walls: Install insulation in your walls by adding high-quality insulation boards or rolls within the walls. Make sure that they fit snugly between the timber frames.
- Floor: Lay batts or insulation boards under the floor, covering them with a vapour barrier to prevent moisture build-up.
- Doors and Windows: The doors and windows are where you may lose the warm or cool air from your garden room, so it's a good idea to prioritise the insulation of doors and windows. Opt for double-glazed windows and insulated doors to minimise heat loss and maintain a consistent temperature.

What Base Is Required For These Buildings
The best base is a
solid concrete foundation. Concrete provides a stable and durable base that can support the weight of the structure and withstand changes in weather and ground conditions. It also helps to prevent moisture from seeping into the garden building, ensuring a longer lifespan. Additionally, a concrete base can be levelled accurately to ensure the room sits evenly, which is important for the structural integrity and aesthetics of the building. Overall, a concrete base is a good option for a garden room due to its strength, stability, and longevity. We can help with this so please ask about concrete or timber subframe options.
