Is a 10×8 Garden Room Big Enough for a Home Office?
For one person, a 10×8 garden office can provide a very comfortable working environment. There is usually enough room for a substantial desk, office chair, computer equipment, and useful storage, while still leaving clear floor space around the furniture.
A nominal 10ft x 8ft footprint gives approximately 80 square feet, or around 7.4 square metres. Remember that this is the nominal building size rather than the guaranteed clear internal floor area, as framing, insulation and internal lining reduce the finished internal dimensions.
Can Two People Work in a 10ft x 8ft Garden Office?
A 10ft x 8ft garden room is one of the smaller sizes where I think a permanent two-person office can become genuinely practical. With sensibly sized desks and carefully planned storage, two people can work comfortably without immediately needing a much larger garden room.
Measure the desks, chairs and equipment you intend to use before ordering. If both people need large desks, several monitors, filing cabinets, and substantial storage, I suggest moving up a size rather than forcing too much furniture into the room.
10×8 or 8×10 Garden Room – What Is the Difference?
The terms 10×8 garden room and 8 x 10 office can describe the same nominal floor area, but the orientation of the building can affect where the doors and windows sit and which side faces into your garden. Always check the product drawing and exact dimensions rather than relying only on the size description.
Door and window positions become particularly important when two people will work in the room or when you need substantial storage. Selected garden room ranges allow alternative layouts, doors and windows, so it is worth considering these options before settling on a standard arrangement.
My Garden Building Experience Since 1979
I’m Robin Antill, founder of 1st Choice Leisure Buildings. I left school at 15 and started my own garden building business in 1979, trading as Marina Sheds. By 1992 we had expanded beyond traditional sheds to include summerhouses, garages, garden rooms and log cabins, and that wider direction led to the name Titan Garden Buildings. My son Craig joined me in 1992 after studying carpentry at Guildford College from 1990, bringing his practical carpentry knowledge into the family business.
We sold Titan Garden Buildings in 1998 and in 2000 formed 1st Choice Leisure Buildings. Rather than being restricted to one manufacturer’s products, Craig and I wanted to use our experience to select quality garden buildings from different manufacturers and give customers a genuine choice. Why I Compare the Complete Garden Room Specification
After working with garden buildings since 1979, I’ve learnt that two 10×8 garden rooms can look remarkably similar online but differ considerably when you compare the framing, cladding, flooring, roof, insulation, glazing, doors and internal finish.
I would never choose a building simply because the word “insulated” appears in the description. Find out what is insulated and compare the complete construction. 10×6 or 10×8 Garden Office?
If you are choosing between 10×6 and 10×8, I would generally favour 10×8 where the garden and budget allow. A 10×8 room has a nominal 80 square feet compared with 60 square feet for a 10×6, giving you around 20 square feet of additional nominal floor area.
That extra width can make a meaningful difference to furniture placement, particularly if you want more storage or need two workstations. If garden space is limited, however, a 10×6 remains a practical one-person office, so choose according to what you genuinely need rather than assuming bigger is always better.
Preparing the Base for a 10×8 Garden Room
A garden room needs a firm, flat and level foundation suitable for the particular building. Don’t build the base based on the nominal 10×8 description alone, because exact external footprints vary between models. Always work from the manufacturer’s dimensions for the building you actually order.
