A 6m x 3m garden room gives you a generous amount of usable space without requiring the depth of some larger garden buildings. At approximately 20ft x 10ft, this long rectangular footprint works particularly well for a substantial home office, studio, gym, hobby room or multi-purpose garden space.

I’m Robin Antill, founder of 1st Choice Leisure Buildings, and I’ve been involved with garden buildings since 1979. I left school at 15 and started Marina Sheds in 1979. In those early years I wasn’t simply selling sheds. I made buildings, delivered them and dealt directly with customers, and that hands-on experience taught me to look beyond attractive photographs and concentrate on how a garden building is actually constructed.

With a building as substantial as a 6×3 garden room, I think that experience matters. You are creating a room that may be used for many years, so I would look carefully at the construction, insulation, glazing, floor, roof, base and internal layout before making a decision.

If you intend to work or spend significant time in the room throughout the year, I would also seriously consider a 6m x 3m insulated garden room. At this size you have a genuine choice between our premium Royal range, where full insulation is included as standard, and selected Platinum buildings where larger dimensions and insulation options give you greater flexibility.

You can compare the suitable garden rooms on this page, browse our complete range of garden rooms and garden offices, explore our insulated garden rooms, or visit our Surrey garden building display site to inspect full-size buildings for yourself.

Why Choose a 6m x 3m Garden Room?

A nominal 6m x 3m garden room gives you around 18 square metres of footprint before allowing for the wall construction. I think this is a particularly useful proportion because the 6m length provides plenty of room while the 3m depth can make the building easier to accommodate in gardens where space from front to back is more restricted.

For a home office, the long layout can work extremely well. You could arrange two or more workstations, create storage at one end and still retain space for seating or meetings.

It also works well for hobbies and leisure. A studio could have separate working and storage areas, while a gym could accommodate several pieces of equipment without needing the footprint of a much deeper building.

Think about future uses as well. Today’s large garden office could eventually become a gym, art room, games room or relaxing family space. Choosing a versatile size now can give the building a much longer useful life.

Is a 6m x 3m Garden Room a Good Size for a Home Office?

Yes. If you need more than a small one-person office, I think 6m x 3m is a very useful size. There is room for substantial desks and storage, and the extra length can allow two or more people to work without sitting immediately beside one another.

You could also divide the space informally, perhaps with workstations at one end and a meeting or seating area at the other. That can make the room feel much more like a professional office rather than simply an outbuilding containing desks.

Before ordering, think about computer screens, shelving, cupboards, electrical sockets and other furniture. Door and window positions can have a major effect on how well a long room works, so planning the layout beforehand is worthwhile.

Natural light is welcome, but more glazing is not automatically better. Consider where the sun will be during the working day and avoid creating a layout where strong light falls directly onto computer screens for hours at a time.

Should You Choose a 6m x 3m Insulated Garden Room?

If your garden building is going to be occupied regularly throughout the year, insulation should be high on your list of priorities. A 6m x 3m insulated garden room can make a very practical year-round office, studio, hobby space or leisure room.

However, I would never choose solely because a building is described as insulated. Find out exactly what is included. Look at the walls, roof and floor and compare the doors and windows as part of the complete specification.

At around 6m long, the main choices I would consider are the Royal garden rooms and the larger Platinum Winchester designs. Royal includes full insulation as part of its standard specification, while Winchester gives you the option of adding a full insulation and lining package.

You may notice that some smaller Platinum models also appear on this page. That is useful if your dimensions are flexible, but if the full 6m length is important, check the size range carefully. Fleet, Odiham and Highclere stop at approximately 4.8m long, whereas Royal and Platinum Winchester provide suitable options at around 6m.

You can compare our wider selection on the insulated garden rooms page. If you tell us how frequently you intend to use the room and at what times of year, we can help you decide which specification makes sense.

Remember that insulation does not produce heat. It helps reduce heat transfer, so suitable heating will normally still be required during cold weather. During summer, opening windows, ventilation, blinds and the orientation of the building can become equally important.

Royal or Platinum for a 6m x 3m Garden Room?

At around 6m x 3m you have genuine choices from both our Royal and Platinum ranges, but it is important to compare the correct models. Royal offers several designs capable of the required dimensions, while within Platinum it is primarily the larger Winchester range that I would consider if the full 6m length matters.

I would not automatically choose Royal simply because it is our premium range, nor choose Platinum solely because the initial investment may be lower. Start with the intended use and compare what you are actually getting for your money.

Royal Garden Rooms

Royal is our premium garden room range and is particularly relevant if you want a true 6m-long insulated building. The Royal Denham, Marlow, Buckingham and Bletchley are all available up to approximately 6.0m x 3.6m, so a nominal 6m x 3m garden room sits comfortably within the available size range.

Royal buildings are fully insulated as standard, including the walls, floor and roof, and include residential-style PVCu double-glazed doors and windows. This makes them particularly worth considering if the building will become an everyday office, studio or leisure room used throughout the year.

The Royal Denham Garden Room is one example, but I would compare all four Royal designs because their different door, window and roof arrangements can make one model better suited to your garden than another.

If you want a premium 6m x 3m insulated garden room with the insulation and glazing already included in the standard specification, Royal would be my natural starting point.

Platinum Garden Rooms

Platinum gives you a different balance of specification, flexibility and price. However, if you specifically want a garden room around 6m long, it is important to look at the available dimensions rather than simply choosing any Platinum model shown in this category.

Fleet and Odiham are fully insulated as standard but extend to approximately 4.8m x 3.6m, while Highclere extends to approximately 4.8m x 4.2m. They are excellent garden rooms, but they do not provide the full 6m length.

For a genuine 6m x 3m garden room, I would therefore look particularly closely at the Platinum Winchester Apex and the other Winchester designs. Winchester extends to substantially larger dimensions, up to approximately 8.4m x 4.8m, so a room around 6m x 3m sits comfortably within the available size range.

The Winchester range includes apex, pent and transverse designs and offers a full insulation package as an option. This makes Winchester particularly useful if you want a large Platinum garden office but also want flexibility over the specification, dimensions and layout.

Feature Platinum Garden Rooms Royal Garden Rooms
Best for Home offices, hobbies, studios and garden retreats Premium offices, studios and larger multi-purpose rooms
Price position Lower initial investment Premium specification and price
Popular models Fleet Apex and Odiham Pent Bletchley, Buckingham, Denham and Marlow
Typical sizes Fleet and Odiham available up to approximately 16×12 ft Royal models available up to approximately 20×12 ft
Insulation Fully insulated Fleet and Odiham models with insulated walls and roof Premium fully insulated construction
Double glazing 14mm double glazing on Fleet and Odiham Higher-specification double-glazed garden room range
Design choice Apex Fleet or contemporary pent-roof Odiham Wider choice of distinctive Royal designs and configurations
Why choose it? You want an insulated garden office or room with an excellent balance of comfort, quality and price. You want a more substantial garden room with premium specification and additional floor-space options.

Which Is Better for You: Royal or Platinum Winchester?

I would start with how you intend to use the building. If you want a premium garden room with insulation to the walls, floor and roof and residential-style double glazing included in the standard specification, Royal is an obvious range to consider.

If you prefer greater flexibility over dimensions and layout, like the Winchester designs or want to select optional insulation according to your requirements, Platinum Winchester can make more sense.

Neither answer is automatically right. After more than 45 years in the garden building industry, I have learned that good value does not mean buying the cheapest product or automatically buying the most expensive. It means paying for a specification that suits what you actually need.

My Garden Building Experience Goes Back to 1979

I think customers should know who is behind the advice they are reading. I left school at 15 and started my own garden building business in 1979, trading as Marina Sheds.

In those early days I was very much hands-on. I made garden buildings, sold them, delivered them and spoke directly to the customers who would be using them. That gave me practical knowledge of timber buildings and taught me where construction quality really matters.

I sold Marina Sheds in 1990. Unfortunately, I did not receive all the money that was due from the sale. It was a difficult business lesson, but I remained involved in garden buildings and carried on.

From Marina Sheds to Titan Garden Buildings

By 1992 we were offering far more than garden sheds. We added summerhouses, garages, garden rooms and log cabins, and that wider direction meant a change of name to Titan Garden Buildings.

My son Craig joined me in 1992 after studying carpentry at Guildford College from 1990. His carpentry training brought additional practical timber knowledge into the business and from that point garden buildings became very much a father-and-son concern.

We sold Titan Garden Buildings in 1998 and then considered what direction we wanted to take next.

Why We Formed 1st Choice Leisure Buildings

In 2000 Craig and I made the decision to retail carefully selected quality products from established manufacturers rather than being tied to buildings from just one source. That decision led to the formation of 1st Choice Leisure Buildings.

This approach meant we could compare manufacturers and offer different specifications, designs and price points. More importantly, it meant we could help customers choose the building that suited them rather than trying to make one particular range fit everybody.

Today Craig runs the day-to-day business and I continue to support him and the team whenever required. You can read more about our story on the About 1st Choice Leisure Buildings page.

What Have More Than 45 Years Taught Me About Garden Rooms?

The most important lesson is to look beyond the photograph. An attractive image tells you whether you like the appearance, but it does not tell you enough about the timber, framing, floor, roof, glazing or insulation.

I would also compare what is included in the price. Installation, insulation, glazing, timber treatment, roof covering and finishes can all affect the final cost. Two garden rooms at apparently similar prices may not represent the same value once you look at the complete specification.

Then think about how the room will actually be used. Somebody wanting a comfortable everyday home office has different requirements from somebody wanting somewhere for hobbies during the warmer months.

Since our story began in 1979, more than 50,000 buildings have been supplied across the UK. What that experience has reinforced for me is that there is no single garden room that is right for everybody. The useful question is not “Which is the best garden room?” but “Which is the best garden room for the way I intend to use it?”

What Else Can You Use a 6m x 3m Garden Room For?

A 6×3 garden room is particularly versatile because its long footprint can be divided into different areas without necessarily needing physical partitions.

As a home gym, you could position cardio equipment or weights along one section and retain clear floor space for stretching or other exercise. As an art or craft studio, you could have a work area at one end and storage at the other.

It could also work as a games room, music room, hobby room or family retreat. If the room will have more than one purpose, plan each activity before deciding where the doors and windows should go.

Thinking beyond today’s requirement is worthwhile. A building substantial enough to adapt as your needs change is likely to prove more useful over the years.

Can a 6m x 3m Garden Room Be Bespoke?

Yes, depending on the range. Both Royal and Platinum Winchester provide useful flexibility, although the available options differ between models.

If you need doors on a particular side, want fewer windows for privacy, require additional glazing for a studio or need dimensions adjusted to suit your garden, tell us before ordering.

Platinum Winchester is particularly useful where bespoke layout and size flexibility matter. Royal also provides a good degree of choice while combining that flexibility with its premium standard insulation and glazing specification.

I would always plan the room around the way it will be used rather than automatically accepting a standard door and window arrangement.

A 6m x 3m Garden Room Needs the Right Base

I have been saying this for decades: a good garden building needs a good base. It should be firm, flat, level and suitable for the particular building being installed.

With a room approximately six metres long, getting the base level across the entire footprint is particularly important. A poor base can affect the structure and cause doors and windows to operate incorrectly.

Check the exact base requirements for your chosen model before installation. Base-building services are also available, and we can advise what is appropriate for the building you are considering.

Access should be considered at the same time. Tell us about narrow passages, steps, walls, height restrictions or other difficulties between the road and the installation site before delivery.

Professional Installation Included

Qualifying garden rooms on this page include professional assembly within the applicable delivery areas. With a substantial building such as this, I think that is an important part of the overall package.

The building is erected by people familiar with its construction, provided the agreed base and access requirements have been met. Always check the individual product because specifications, available sizes, options and delivery conditions vary between ranges.

Do You Need Planning Permission for a 6m x 3m Garden Room?

Many garden rooms can be installed under permitted development rights, but you should never assume that this automatically applies to your property. A 6m x 3m building is substantial enough that I would check the position carefully before ordering.

Building height, proximity to boundaries, the amount of land covered, the property itself and the intended use can all be relevant. Listed buildings, designated land and other circumstances can also be subject to additional restrictions.

If you are uncertain, check the current requirements applying to your property with your local planning authority before committing to the building.

Why I Still Recommend Seeing Garden Rooms Before You Buy

The internet has made researching garden rooms much easier than when I started Marina Sheds in 1979, but photographs and specifications can only tell you so much. You cannot feel how substantial a floor is, operate the doors and windows or properly appreciate the space until you stand inside a building.

That is why I recommend visiting our Surrey garden building display site if you can. We normally have around 60–80 garden buildings on display, including a large selection of garden rooms, so you can compare different sizes, styles and specifications in person.

Walk inside the buildings, open the doors and windows, look at the construction and imagine how you would use the space. Think about where your furniture or desk would go and compare one specification with another. Our team is also there to answer your questions.

After working with garden buildings since 1979, I still believe seeing them in person is one of the best ways to make an informed choice. A garden room is a significant investment, and comparing full-size buildings can help you decide what you genuinely need before you buy.

Why Buy Your 6m x 3m Garden Room From 1st Choice?

1st Choice Leisure Buildings is a family business with garden building experience going back to 1979. Craig now runs the day-to-day business and I remain involved to support him and the team whenever required.

Between Craig’s carpentry background and my experience in manufacturing, selling and supplying garden buildings, there is a considerable amount of practical knowledge behind the advice we give.

More than 50,000 buildings have been supplied across the UK since our story began, but I don’t think experience is simply about quoting a large number. It should mean being able to explain why one building may be more appropriate than another and when spending more will genuinely give you something useful.

A nominal 6m x 3m garden room represents around 18 square metres of footprint, approximately 20ft x 10ft. Exact external and internal dimensions vary by model, so always check the individual product before planning the base or furniture.

Is a 6m x 3m garden room big enough for two people to work in?

Yes. Its long footprint can accommodate two or more sensible workstations together with storage and potentially a separate seating area, although the precise layout depends on your furniture and the position of the doors and windows.

Can I buy a fully insulated 6m x 3m garden room?

Yes. Royal models in this category extend to approximately 6m in length and include insulation to the walls, floor and roof as standard. Platinum Winchester can also accommodate this general size, with a full insulation and internal lining package available as an option.

Which Platinum garden room is suitable at 6m x 3m?

If you need approximately 6m of length, I would concentrate on the Platinum Winchester range. Fleet, Odiham and Highclere stop at approximately 4.8m long, whereas Winchester extends considerably beyond 6m and therefore provides the more appropriate Platinum choice at this size.

Should I choose Royal or Platinum Winchester?

Royal is particularly suitable if you want a premium garden room with full insulation and residential-style double glazing included as standard. Platinum Winchester is worth considering if you place greater emphasis on bespoke size and layout flexibility and want to choose the insulation package as an option.

Can I customise a 6×3 garden room?

Yes. Bespoke options are available on selected Royal and Platinum Winchester buildings. Depending on the model, you may be able to alter dimensions, door and window positions, glazing, cladding, finishes and insulation specification.

Can I use a 6m x 3m garden room as a gym?

Yes. The long floor area can work particularly well for gym equipment. Check the internal height, floor specification and ventilation and make sure you allow sufficient clear space around each item of equipment.

Does a 6m x 3m garden room need a proper base?

Yes. A firm, flat and level base suitable for the chosen model is essential. With a building approximately six metres long, maintaining a level base across the whole footprint is especially important.

Is professional installation included?

Professional assembly is included with qualifying garden room ranges within the applicable delivery areas. Check the individual product page or ask us to confirm exactly what is included with the building you are considering.

Do I need planning permission for a 6m x 3m garden room?

Possibly. Many garden buildings can fall within permitted development rights, but the position depends on factors including height, siting, land coverage, the property and intended use. If you are uncertain, check the requirements applying to your property with your local planning authority before ordering.

My Final Advice on Choosing a 6m x 3m Garden Room

A 6m x 3m garden room gives you an excellent amount of usable space while retaining a relatively manageable depth. That makes it especially useful for a large home office, studio, gym or multi-purpose room.

If you expect regular year-round use, compare the available 6m x 3m insulated garden room choices carefully. Royal gives you premium fully insulated options at this size, including insulation to the walls, floor and roof, while Platinum Winchester offers greater flexibility with an optional insulation and lining package.

After working with garden buildings since 1979, my advice remains straightforward: decide what you actually need the building to do, compare complete specifications rather than photographs or headline prices and make sure the base and layout are right before you order.

If you are not sure whether Royal or Platinum Winchester is right for your 6×3 garden room, ask us. Our job is to explain the differences and help you make an informed choice rather than simply steering you towards whichever building costs the most.

If possible, visit our Surrey garden building display site and see representative buildings for yourself. If you cannot visit, contact us and tell us what you are trying to achieve. Craig, the team and I would much rather help you get the specification right before you buy.
