Choosing a 9×6 Shed

A 9×6 shed gives you a useful balance between garden storage and a footprint that is still relatively compact. With a nominal 9ft x 6ft size, you have around 54 square feet of floor area, giving you room for garden tools, bikes, equipment and shelving without moving into a much larger workshop. I’m Robin Antill, founder of 1st Choice Leisure Buildings, and sheds are where my working life in garden buildings began in 1979. After more than 45 years in the trade, I still believe the right shed should be chosen by looking carefully at its construction, layout and what you genuinely need it to do rather than simply buying the cheapest building of approximately the right size.

A 9ft x 6ft shed gives you more usable depth than narrower 9ft buildings, which can make it easier to combine storage along the walls with a sensible central walkway. Before ordering, measure the larger things you intend to store and think about where shelving, tools and equipment will actually go.

Is a 6×9 Shed the Same as a 9×6 Shed?

You may see a 9×6 shed described as a 6×9 shed or 9ft x 6ft shed. These descriptions can refer to broadly the same nominal footprint with the dimensions reversed, but always check which measurement represents the frontage and which represents the depth. Door position, windows and roof orientation can make a considerable difference to how the building works in your garden, so use the exact dimensions and layout of your chosen model when planning its position and preparing the base.

The Four 9×6 Sheds Currently Shown on This Page

The current page displays four products: Diamond Chichester Pent, Woodgate Reverse Apex, Diamond Barnham Apex and Diamond Barnham Pent. All four have published size ranges that genuinely cover a 9ft x 6ft requirement, so these are the buildings I would concentrate on when comparing your options.

All four currently show free fitting and a colour paint finish option. The Chichester Pent and Woodgate Reverse Apex also show bespoke options, while the Barnham Apex and Barnham Pent have their own range features, including the published double-door wording for sizes 8ft and over.

Diamond Chichester Pent 9×6 Shed

The Diamond Chichester Pent has a published range from 4ft x 4ft to 24ft x 12ft, so a 9×6 shed sits comfortably within its available sizes. It currently shows free fitting, a colour paint finish option and bespoke options.

The pent roof provides a single roof slope and can be a sensible choice where you prefer that appearance or where the way the building sits alongside a wall, fence or boundary makes a pent design more suitable. The bespoke options can also be useful if moving a door or window would make better use of the available internal space.

I wouldn’t change a standard design simply because bespoke options are available. Work out what you need to store and where everything will go first. If altering a door or window position genuinely makes the shed easier to use, then it is worth considering.

Woodgate Reverse Apex 9×6 Shed

The Woodgate Reverse Apex also has a published range from 4ft x 4ft to 24ft x 12ft and currently shows free fitting, a colour paint finish option and bespoke options. Its reverse apex configuration provides an alternative to the pent and conventional apex layouts on this page.

On a 9ft x 6ft shed, orientation matters. Consider the direction you will approach the building from, where the doors need to be, and which walls you want available for shelving or equipment. The Woodgate’s bespoke flexibility may be useful where the standard arrangement doesn’t quite suit your garden.

Diamond Barnham Apex and Barnham Pent

The Diamond Barnham Apex and Barnham Pent have published ranges from 6ft x 4ft to 28ft x 12ft, so both genuinely cover a 9ft x 6ft shed requirement. Both currently show free fitting and a colour paint finish option.

The main choice between them is roof style. The Barnham Apex gives you the familiar traditional pitched roof, while the Barnham Pent provides a single-slope roof. Your choice should be based on where the shed will stand, how you want it to look and how the layout works for what you intend to store.

The Barnham range information refers to double doors on sizes 8ft and over. If door width is particularly important because you need to move larger equipment in and out, I would still check the exact door specification of your chosen 9×6 configuration before ordering.

Why My Experience With Sheds Matters

Customers should know who is behind the advice they are reading. I left school at 15 and started my own garden building business in 1979, trading as Marina Sheds. I was hands-on from the beginning, manufacturing and selling timber sheds, so I learnt about garden buildings by actually working with timber and dealing directly with customers rather than simply reading specifications in a catalogue.

That practical manufacturing background still influences how I judge a shed today. An attractive door, window or paint finish naturally catches your eye, but I also look at the timber, framing, floor, roof, glazing and how the complete building has been put together. Two sheds can look very similar in photographs and still be quite different when you examine their construction properly.

I sold Marina Sheds in 1990. Unfortunately, I didn’t receive all the money I was due from the sale. It was a difficult business lesson, but it certainly didn’t end my involvement with garden buildings.

In 1992 we expanded beyond sheds and added summerhouses, garages, garden rooms and log cabins. Marina Sheds no longer properly described the wider business, so the change in direction also meant a change of name, and we became Titan Garden Buildings.

My son Craig joined me in 1992 after studying carpentry at Guildford College from 1990. His carpentry training brought additional practical woodworking and timber-construction knowledge into a business already built around manufacturing and selling garden buildings.

We sold Titan Garden Buildings in 1998 and, in 2000, Craig and I decided to take a different approach. Rather than manufacturing everything ourselves or being tied to one source, we wanted to use our experience to select quality garden buildings from manufacturers we trusted and give customers a genuine choice. That decision led us to form 1st Choice Leisure Buildings.

Craig now runs the day-to-day business, and I continue to support him and the team as required. I’ve been involved with sheds and garden buildings since 1979. That experience matters because I’ve seen the industry from both sides: first manufacturing and selling timber buildings ourselves and later comparing products from different manufacturers for our customers.

What More Than 45 Years Has Taught Me About Sheds

More than 45 years around sheds has taught me that dimensions and price don’t tell you everything. A 9×6 shed is a substantial enough building for construction quality, framing, floor, roof, doors and fittings to deserve proper consideration. I would rather see somebody choose the right shed once than save a little initially and regret the decision afterwards.

Construction Matters on a 9×6 Shed

The current 9×6 category states that its wooden sheds use redwood deal rather than cheaper whitewood, with at least nominal 2×2 vertical framing, timber floor and roof construction and toughened glass as standard. These are exactly the sorts of practical details I encourage customers to examine rather than choosing a shed solely from an attractive photograph or headline price.

Specifications can still vary between individual models and configurations, so compare the precise building you are considering rather than assuming every 9ft x 6ft shed is constructed in the same way. Look at the framing, floor, roof, doors, glazing and available options before making your final choice.

Making the Most of a 9×6 Shed

A 9ft x 6ft shed can provide useful space for garden tools, bikes, gardening equipment and other outdoor items while leaving room for shelving and wall storage. Compared with a narrower shed, the six-foot depth gives you greater flexibility when arranging the interior.

I would still plan the inside before ordering. Shelving and hooks can keep smaller items off the floor, while larger equipment can be positioned where it remains easy to reach. Don’t judge suitability from floor area alone; measure your largest items and check the door opening as well.

Bespoke Options on the Chichester and Woodgate

The Diamond Chichester Pent and Woodgate Reverse Apex currently show bespoke options. On a 6×9 shed, changing a door or window position can sometimes make a considerable difference because it may create a longer uninterrupted wall for shelving or improve the way you enter and move around the building.

I would only alter the standard arrangement where there is a practical reason. Think about what will go inside the shed first and then decide whether a bespoke change would genuinely improve the building for you.

Free Fitting on the Current 9×6 Sheds

All four products currently displayed on this page show free fitting. The wider category information also states that the wooden sheds are delivered and assembled free of charge, subject to delivery restrictions. I think fitting is an important benefit because even a well-made timber shed needs to be assembled correctly if the floor, roof and doors are going to perform as intended.

Free fitting does not remove the need for a suitable site. You still need appropriate access and a firm, flat and level base ready for the building. If access from the road to your garden is restricted or awkward, please tell us before ordering rather than waiting until fitting day.

Get the Base Right

A 9×6 shed needs proper support across its complete footprint. An uneven or unsuitable foundation can affect how the building sits, cause the floor to flex and interfere with the operation of doors and windows. Getting the base right is one of the less exciting parts of buying a shed, but it is also one of the most important.

If you don’t already have a suitable base, take a look at our garden building base and additional services. Options are available for different sites, including situations where an existing concrete or slab base needs correcting before the building can be fitted.

Colour Paint Finish Options

All four sheds currently displayed show a colour paint finish option. This lets you choose a finish that works with your house, fencing, and the rest of the garden, rather than leaving appearance as an afterthought.

Colours displayed online can vary because of photography, lighting and different screens. If an exact shade is particularly important, check the current colour information or arrange a sample before making your final decision.

See Sheds Before You Buy

I have encouraged customers to inspect sheds before buying for many years. Photographs can show style and colour, but they cannot completely tell you how substantial a floor feels, how a door operates or what the timber and framing are like when you see them close up.

You are welcome to visit our Surrey garden building display site at Sutton Green, near Guildford and Woking. We can’t display every model in every possible size, but seeing representative sheds allows you to compare construction and finishes before making your decision.

Take your time, look closely and ask questions. We don’t believe in high-pressure selling. I started my first shed business in 1979, and I still believe that seeing what you’re buying and understanding the specification are two of the best ways to make an informed decision.

Which 9×6 Shed Should You Choose?

If you want a pent roof together with bespoke flexibility, the Diamond Chichester Pent deserves consideration. If you prefer a reverse apex layout with bespoke options, look at the Woodgate Reverse Apex. If you want to compare traditional apex and pent roof styles within the Barnham range, consider the Barnham Apex and Barnham Pent.

There is no single best 9×6 shed for everybody. The right choice depends on roof style, door arrangement, available options, construction and how you intend to use the building. Start with those practical requirements and the decision becomes much easier.

My Advice Before You Order

Mark out approximately 9ft x 6ft in your garden, measure the items you intend to store and check the precise external dimensions, door arrangement and window positions of your preferred model. Make sure you have a suitable firm, flat, level base and adequate access from the road to where the building will stand.

If you’re unsure which 9ft x 6ft shed is right for you, please contact us. Tell Craig, me or one of the team what you need to store, how much room you have and where the shed will stand. We’ll help you compare the four actual products shown on this page and choose the building that makes sense for you.
