When choosing a summer house, you need to check the specifications to ensure it will have the strength to last. So always check out the thickness of the timber, whether it’s made from redwood or the cheap inferior whitewood, how thick the framing is etc. Does it has toughened glass for safety or imperfect horticultural glass, plastic or perspex? Are the doors and windows joinery made, meaning they will last a very long time? All important questions.
On many of the summerhouses available on the web, you will find that they will deliver them to your house and leave them for you to build. You can save a little money this way, but you will have to build the summer building yourself. That’s OK if you are a good DIYer, but it will still be hard work. The best option is to take advantage of 1st Choice FREE assembly option on the Diamond and Platinum buildings. They will do all the hard work – all you need to do is build a level base for it to go onto. And they can even arrange that for you as well if you wish. This way, you can be sure your new building will be built correctly, and all you need to do is enjoy it.
We have a large range of buildings for you to choose from and in several styles. However, we specialise in making buildings to suit your needs. Whether it needs to be taller, extra or fewer windows, the doors and windows moved, we can do that for you. Ensure you buy the building to suit you and your family with no compromises. Give us a call on (0800) 999 6995 or visit our showroom and discuss what you would like. We are happy to provide a quote to suit you with no pressure.
To make the most of your new building, it’s a good idea to have it lined and insulated so you can get the most use out of you all year round. By doing so, it will keep the building cooler in summer and also warmer in winter. It’s possible to do this yourself if you feel confident. However, there is an option to have this done for you on all the Platinum summer buildings. It can be seen to be a luxury, but on those hot summer days or cold winter ones, you will be glad you did. Just contact us, and we will arrange a free quote for you.
Before deciding on a new 16×12 building for your garden, you should always do your homework (sorry!) as it’s very easy to be taken in with a flashy website, leaflet or colour brochure. Try to find time and make a trip down to one of our showrooms where you can examples on view. By doing so, you will then be able to make an informed choice about what you may be buying. We have a large collection of summer buildings which you are very welcome to view. We will be delighted to show you the different buildings and answer any queries you may have. We can provide quotations as well. Another thing to do is to take a look at the
feedback from previous customers which can be enlightening.

It is imperative to attend to the maintenance of your garden building periodically to ensure its longevity, despite any inclination to postpone the task. By adhering to our recommendations, the need for such maintenance will arise no more frequently than every 2 to 3 years. This measure will safeguard your outdoor structure against the elements.
The process of treating a building can be a messy undertaking, and it is advisable to don old attire that can be discarded if excessively stained. It is important to note that certain treatments may contain chemicals that can cause skin irritation, hence caution must be exercised. It is recommended to avoid splashing the treatment and to take one’s time. In the event of any treatment coming into contact with one’s hands, face, or skin, it is imperative to wash it off immediately.
If you have the opportunity, it is advisable to treat your new 16×12 summer building prior to its erection, particularly if it is one of the more affordable options available online or at your local DIY superstore. The treatment used by these manufacturers is often akin to coloured water and does not provide adequate protection for your building. Treating all components of the building before assembly will ensure comprehensive coverage. While the assembled parts will not be exposed to the elements, it is still recommended to apply the treatment liberally to prevent moisture from penetrating the wood.
Prepared all round (PAR) timber, such as shiplap or tongue and groove wooden buildings, will have a smooth finish, allowing for quick application of the treatment. However, it is advisable to apply at least two coats, as the treatment may not penetrate the wood effectively. If your building is constructed from feather edge or sawn-finished timber, the treatment will require more time to soak in. Nevertheless, this method will provide the longest-lasting protection, as the treatment will penetrate the timbers.
You can choose to use a spray to apply preservative but, if you do, you must wear a face mask and, ideally, goggles to ensure that the fine spray does not get down your throat or on your eyes. In some instances where it is awkward to get to, such as between the building and a fence or wall a spray is a good idea. By getting on the roof, you can reach down into the gap and liberally spray the treatment onto all exposed areas.
After you have finished treating you can take a break from these duties for, generally at least 2 or 3 years. You will find that the sides of your summer building facing into the weather, i.e. the sides which get the sun shining onto it or the rain splashing against it will need treating more often. It will become apparent by the sides fading in colour. Never wait until signs of damp start getting into the wood as this will be the beginning of the end for your garden building.
We can offer a full painting service for you which is designed for much more than the standard treatment, which is very good anyway. Take a look at this page for full information about painting your 16×12 summerhouse
