When choosing a summer house, you need to check the specifications to ensure it will have the strength to last. So always check out the thickness of the timber, whether it’s made from redwood or the cheap inferior whitewood, how thick the framing is etc. Does it has toughened glass for safety or imperfect horticultural glass, plastic or perspex? Are the doors and windows joinery made, meaning they will last a very long time? All important questions.
On many of the summerhouses available on the web, you will find that they will deliver them to your house and leave them for you to build. You can save a little money this way, but you will have to build the summer building yourself. That’s OK if you are a good DIYer, but it will still be hard work. The best option is to take advantage of 1st Choice FREE assembly option on the Diamond and Platinum buildings. They will do all the hard work – all you need to do is build a level base for it to go onto. And they can even arrange that for you as well if you wish. This way, you can be sure your new building will be built correctly, and all you need to do is enjoy it.
We have a large range of buildings for you to choose from and in several styles. However, we specialise in making buildings to suit your needs. Whether it needs to be taller, extra or fewer windows, the doors and windows moved, we can do that for you. Ensure you buy the building to suit you and your family with no compromises. Give us a call on (0800) 999 6995 or visit our showroom and discuss what you would like. We are happy to provide a quote to suit you with no pressure.
To make the most of your new building, it’s a good idea to have it lined and insulated so you can get the most use out of you all year round. By doing so, it will keep the building cooler in summer and also warmer in winter. It’s possible to do this yourself if you feel confident. However, there is an option to have this done for you on all the Platinum summer buildings. It can be seen to be a luxury, but on those hot summer days or cold winter ones, you will be glad you did. Just contact us, and we will arrange a free quote for you.
Before deciding on a new 16×6 building for your garden, you should always do your homework (sorry!) as it’s very easy to be taken in with a flashy website, leaflet or colour brochure. Try to find time and make a trip down to one of our showrooms where you can examples on view. By doing so, you will then be able to make an informed choice about what you may be buying. We have a large collection of summer buildings which you are very welcome to view. We will be delighted to show you the different buildings and answer any queries you may have. We can provide quotations as well. Another thing to do is to take a look at the
feedback from previous customers which can be enlightening.

To ensure the longevity of your garden building, it is necessary to periodically treat it. By following our guidance, you will only need to do this every 2 or 3 years. This action will effectively shield your outdoor structure from any harsh weather conditions.
When it comes to painting a summerhouse, it can be a messy task. Therefore, we recommend wearing old clothing that can be discarded if heavily stained. It is important to remember that certain treatments may contain chemicals that can irritate the skin.
Please ensure that you exercise caution to prevent any splashing of the treatment and take ample time during the process. In the event that the treatment comes into contact with your hands, face, or skin, it is recommended that you immediately wash it off. If feasible, it is advisable to administer treatment to your new building prior to its assembly. This is especially critical for less expensive options that are available online or at local DIY stores, as the treatment they employ typically offers minimal protection.
Treating all components of the building before assembly helps to prevent moisture from penetrating the wood. Although these assembled parts may not be exposed to the elements, it is still advantageous to apply the treatment generously.
It can be observed that PAR (prepared all round) timber, such as shiplap or T&G wooden buildings, possess a smooth finish, allowing for swift application of paint treatment. It is advisable, however, to apply a minimum of two coats, as the treatment may not penetrate the wood effectively. In the case of feather edge or sawn finished timber buildings, the treatment may require a longer duration to be applied, as it tends to soak into the wood. Nevertheless, it is noteworthy that this treatment will endure for a longer period, owing to its ability to penetrate the timbers.
You can choose to use a spray to apply preservative but, if you do, it is vital that you wear a face mask and, ideally, goggles to ensure that the fine spray does not get down your throat or on your eyes. It some instances where it is awkward to get to, such as between the building and a fence or wall a spray is a good idea. By getting on the roof, you can reach down into the gap and liberally spray the treatment onto all exposed areas.
After you have finished treating you can take a break from these duties for, generally at least 2 or 3 years. You will find that the sides of your summer building facing into the weather, i.e. the sides which get the sun shining onto it or the rain splashing against it will need treating more often. It will become apparent by the sides fading in colour. Never wait until signs of damp start getting into the wood as this will be the beginning of the end for your garden building.
You may feel it is worth spending out and having a painted 16×6 summer house knowing that, besides looking good, will not need any further attention from you for many years to come. My advice is based on 43 years in the
garden buildings business.
