Choosing a 6m x 3m Summer House
A 6m x 3m summer house is a substantial garden building, with the category described as approximately 20ft x 10ft. At this size, you have enough room to create a genuine additional space for relaxing, hobbies, entertaining, a studio, a gym or home working. I’m Robin Antill, founder of 1st Choice Leisure Buildings, and after working with timber garden buildings since 1979, my advice for a building this size is to look beyond the photograph. Construction, insulation, doors, windows and how you genuinely intend to use the room are just as important as its appearance.
It is also important to check the exact dimensions of the individual model. Products in this category have different published size ranges. If you need a building around 6m wide, the three Winchester models are the clearest choice because their published ranges extend comfortably beyond that size.
Is a 3m x 6m Summerhouse the Same Size?
You may see a 6m x 3m summerhouse described as a 3m x 6m summerhouse. Usually, these descriptions refer to the same footprint with the dimensions reversed, but always confirm which measurement represents the frontage and which represents the depth. Exact external dimensions vary between models, so work from the measurements of your chosen building when preparing the site and base.
The Summerhouses Currently Shown on This Page
The current 6m x 3m category displays eleven products: Platinum Winchester Apex, Winchester Pent, Winchester Transverse, Kingclere Apex, Pent Odiham, Apex Fleet, Twyford Pent and Highclere Apex, together with the Diamond Ashington, Bolney Georgian and Washington Classic.
If you specifically want a summerhouse whose published size range clearly reaches a nominal 6m x 3m configuration, I would start with the Winchester Apex, Winchester Pent and Winchester Transverse. All three have published size ranges from approximately 2.4m x 1.8m up to 8.4m x 4.8m, so they comfortably cover the size represented by this category.
The other models displayed have smaller published maximum dimensions. Kingclere, Pent Odiham, Apex Fleet and Twyford Pent extend to approximately 4.8m x 3.6m, while Highclere extends to approximately 4.8m x 4.2m. The Diamond Ashington, Bolney Georgian and Washington Classic publish maximum listed dimensions of approximately 3.6m x 4.8m. For that reason, I would check orientation and exact model dimensions carefully rather than assume every product displayed here is available as a literal 6.0m x 3.0m building.
Winchester Apex, Pent or Transverse?
The three Winchester models give you different ways to approach a genuine 6m x 3m summer house. The Winchester Apex provides a traditional apex-roof appearance, while the Winchester Pent offers cleaner, contemporary lines. The Winchester Transverse offers another configuration, so compare the positions of the doors and windows as well as the roof design.
One is automatically better than another. A building around 6m wide will become a noticeable feature in your garden, so consider your house, fencing, paving, and planting, as well as how you intend to arrange the interior.
Why My Experience Matters
I left school at 15 and started my own garden building business in 1979, trading as Marina Sheds. I was directly involved with manufacturing and selling timber garden buildings, so I learnt the trade by working with the buildings themselves rather than simply selling something from a catalogue.
That hands-on manufacturing background still influences how I judge a summerhouse today. Doors and windows naturally attract your attention first, but I also look at the timber, framing, floor, roof and glazing. Two buildings can look remarkably similar online and still be very different when you examine how they have actually been constructed.
I sold Marina Sheds in 1990. Unfortunately, I did not receive all the money I was due from the sale. It was a difficult business lesson, but it certainly didn’t end my involvement with garden buildings.
In 1992 we broadened what we offered by adding summerhouses, garages, garden rooms and log cabins. We had moved well beyond sheds, so that change in direction also meant a change of name, and we became Titan Garden Buildings.
My son Craig joined me in 1992 after studying carpentry at Guildford College from 1990. His carpentry training brought practical woodworking and timber-construction knowledge into the business and complemented the manufacturing and retail experience I had already gained.
We sold Titan Garden Buildings in 1998 and, in 2000, Craig and I decided to take a different approach. Rather than manufacturing everything ourselves and naturally being tied to our own range, we wanted to use our experience to select quality buildings from established manufacturers. That was when we formed 1st Choice Leisure Buildings.
Craig now runs the day-to-day business, and I continue to support him and the team as required. I’ve been involved with garden buildings since 1979. That experience matters because I’ve seen the industry from both sides: first manufacturing and selling timber buildings ourselves and later comparing products from different manufacturers for our customers.
What More Than 45 Years Has Taught Me
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learnt is that dimensions alone don’t tell you whether a garden building represents good value. Two 6m x 3m summer houses can appear similar in photographs yet differ considerably in framing, timber, floor, roof, glazing, insulation and general construction.
The right summerhouse isn’t necessarily the cheapest or the most expensive. It’s the building whose specification suits what you genuinely intend to do inside it.
Construction Matters on a Building This Size
The current 6m x 3m category highlights high-quality redwood timber, solid wooden floors and toughened glass as standard. These are the practical details I encourage customers to consider, rather than focusing solely on attractive photographs or headline prices.
Having worked with timber garden buildings since 1979, customers should understand what they are buying. Look at the framing, timber, floor, roof, glazing, doors and windows of the particular model and compare the complete specification before deciding what represents good value.
Do You Need an Insulated 6m x 3m Summer House?
The three Winchester models whose published size ranges clearly reach a 6m width currently offer full insulation as an option. Whether you need it depends mainly on how you intend to use the building. If it will primarily be a place to relax or entertain during pleasant weather, you may decide full insulation isn’t necessary. If you expect to work, pursue hobbies or spend longer periods inside during colder weather, insulation becomes much more relevant.
The category also displays the Platinum Pent Odiham and Apex Fleet, which are currently fully insulated, although their published maximum dimensions stop at approximately 4.8m x 3.6m. Kingclere, Twyford and Highclere also offer full insulation as an option but similarly have smaller published maximum dimensions than the Winchester models.
My advice is to choose insulation because the way you intend to use your 3m x 6m summerhouse justifies it. If insulation is especially important, you can also compare our insulated summer houses.
Free Assembly and Installation
The Platinum Winchester Apex, Winchester Pent and Winchester Transverse currently include free assembly. The other Platinum models displayed on this page also show free assembly. Among the Diamond products, the Ashington and Bolney Georgian currently show free installation, while the Washington Classic shows free assembly.
Having the building assembled or installed for you removes a substantial job, but you still need suitable access and an appropriate firm, flat and level base. If access to your garden is narrow, restricted, or unusual, please tell us before ordering so we can consider potential difficulties in advance.
Get the Base Right
A 6m x 3m summer house needs proper support throughout its substantial footprint. An uneven or unsuitable base can affect how the structure sits and may cause problems with doors and windows, so this is one part of the project where I would never recommend cutting corners.

Plan the 6m x 3m Interior Before You Buy
The generous width is one of the main attractions of a 6m x 3m summerhouse. You have enough room to create different areas rather than simply arranging furniture around the outside walls. You might have comfortable seating at one end and a desk, table, exercise area or hobby space at the other.
I recommend marking approximately 6m x 3m on the ground before ordering and placing chairs, boxes or other objects where your main furniture might go. It is a simple exercise, but it gives you a far clearer understanding of how the space will work than looking at measurements on a screen. For final planning, always use the exact dimensions of the individual model you intend to order.
Colour Paint Finish Options
The products currently displayed on this page show colour paint finish options according to the individual model. With a building around 6m wide, colour can have a considerable effect on how prominently the summerhouse sits within your garden, so think about how the finish will work with your house, fencing, paving and planting.
Colours displayed online can vary because of photography, lighting and different screens. If an exact shade is particularly important, check the available colour information or a sample before making your final decision.
See Summerhouses Before You Buy
I have encouraged customers to see garden buildings before buying for many years. A website can show photographs, dimensions and specifications. Still, it cannot completely demonstrate how substantial a floor feels, how the doors operate or what the timber and construction are like when you inspect them close up.
You are welcome to visit our Surrey garden building display site near Guildford, Woking and Ripley. We can’t display every model in every possible size, but seeing representative buildings allows you to compare construction, finishes and features before deciding what matters most to you.
Take your time, look closely and ask questions. We don’t believe in high-pressure selling. I started selling garden buildings in 1979, and I still believe that seeing what you’re buying and understanding the specification are two of the best ways to make an informed decision.
Choosing the Right 6m x 3m Summer House
If a genuine width of around 6m is important, I suggest starting with the Platinum Winchester Apex, Winchester Pent and Winchester Transverse because their published size ranges extend comfortably beyond this category size. All three currently include free assembly, offer colour paint finish options and allow full insulation to be added.
The other products currently displayed are still worth considering if their smaller published maximum dimensions suit your garden. The important thing is not to assume every product in the 6m x 3m summer house category has the same available dimensions.
My Advice Before You Order
Measure your garden carefully and work from the exact dimensions of your chosen model rather than relying solely on the general 6m x 3m description. Check the route into your garden, prepare a firm, flat, level base, and think about where the doors, windows, and furniture need to be. Most importantly, decide what you genuinely want the building to do and choose the specification around that.
