How Much Space Does a 5m x 5m Garden Room Provide?
A true 5m x 5m garden room provides approximately 25 square metres, or around 269 square feet, of nominal floor area. That is a substantial room and gives you considerable freedom when planning workstations, seating, storage or several different activities within the same space.
The finished internal dimensions will be smaller because of framing, insulation and internal lining. Not every product shown in this category measures exactly five metres square either, so always check the individual product dimensions before ordering furniture or arranging the foundation.
Is a 5m x 5m Garden Room Suitable for a Large Home Office?
Yes. A 5m x 5m garden office can provide an extremely generous working environment. Two people can have substantial workstations with plenty of separation, while additional desks may also be practical depending on their size and the amount of storage required.
With around 25 square metres available in a true 5m x 5m room, there can also be space for filing, printers, cupboards and a separate meeting or seating area. I would still plan the furniture first because large desks and storage can use floor space surprisingly quickly.
Can Several People Work in a 5×5 Garden Room?
Yes. A 5×5 garden room, meaning approximately 5m x 5m, can accommodate several workstations when the layout is carefully planned. Think about desk depth, office chairs, monitors, storage and comfortable routes through the room rather than simply counting how many desks can physically fit.
Door and window positions also matter. A well-positioned entrance and glazing can preserve useful wall space for furniture while providing natural light without creating unnecessary glare on computer screens.
Does Every Garden Room on This Page Measure Exactly 5m x 5m?
No. This is particularly important to understand on this category. The buildings shown are available in or around the general large-room size range, but their actual maximum dimensions differ considerably.
Fleet, Odiham and Kingclere currently extend to approximately 4.8m x 3.6m, so they are significantly shallower than a true 5m x 5m building. The Platinum Winchester range extends to approximately 8.4m x 4.8m and is therefore the current range I would investigate first if you want a large room approaching a five-metre-square footprint.
Which Range Should I Consider for a Garden Room Close to 5m x 5m?
If getting reasonably close to five metres in both directions is important, I would look particularly closely at our Platinum Winchester range. Winchester offers far greater size flexibility than Fleet, Odiham or Kingclere and is available in Apex, Pent and Transverse designs.
Its listed sizes extend to approximately 8.4m x 4.8m, so it can provide a large near-square room even though the standard range does not literally extend to a full five metres in depth. Always confirm the exact dimensions you require before preparing the base.
Should a 5m x 5m Garden Room Be Insulated?
If you intend to use a large garden room regularly throughout the year, I would strongly consider insulation. However, I would never choose a building simply because the word “insulated” appears in the description. Compare what is included in the walls, floor and roof together with the doors, glazing and internal finish.
Fleet and Odiham are fully insulated Platinum models but are substantially smaller than a true 5m x 5m room. Winchester is more relevant where you require a larger footprint and can be specified with a full insulation and lining package. You can compare the wider specifications on our insulated garden rooms and offices page.
My Garden Building Experience Since 1979
I’m Robin Antill, founder of 1st Choice Leisure Buildings. I left school at 15 and started my own garden building business in 1979, trading as Marina Sheds. In those early years I made garden buildings, sold them, delivered them and dealt directly with customers, so I learnt to judge buildings by their construction and suitability rather than simply how attractive they looked in photographs.
I sold Marina Sheds in 1990, although unfortunately I did not receive all the money I was due from the sale. It was a difficult business lesson, but it did not end my involvement with garden buildings.
By 1992 we had expanded beyond traditional sheds to include summerhouses, garages, garden rooms and log cabins, and that broader direction led to the name Titan Garden Buildings. My son Craig joined me in 1992 after studying carpentry at Guildford College from 1990, bringing his practical carpentry knowledge into the family business.
We sold Titan Garden Buildings in 1998 and in 2000 formed 1st Choice Leisure Buildings. Rather than being restricted to one manufacturer’s products, Craig and I wanted to use our experience to select quality garden buildings from different manufacturers and give customers a genuine choice. Craig now runs the day-to-day business and I continue to support him and the team whenever required. You can read more about 1st Choice Leisure Buildings and our history.
Why Specification Matters on a Large Garden Room
After working with garden buildings since 1979, I’ve learnt that two large rooms can appear very similar online while being quite different when you compare the framing, cladding, flooring, roof, doors, glazing, insulation and internal finish.
A room around 25 square metres is a substantial purchase. I don’t believe the largest or most expensive option is automatically the right one. Decide how you will use the building, how often it will be occupied and what furniture or equipment it needs to contain, then choose the size and specification accordingly.
Why the Square Layout Is So Useful
A square or near-square garden room gives you considerably more flexibility than a long narrow building. Desks, cupboards and seating can be arranged around several walls, making it easier to create distinct areas for work, meetings, exercise or relaxing.
That flexibility is also useful in the future. A large garden office today could later become a studio, gym, games room or family retreat without the proportions of the building restricting how it can be rearranged.
5m x 4m or 5m x 5m Garden Room?
A true 5m x 5m footprint provides around 25 square metres compared with approximately 20 square metres for 5m x 4m. The extra five square metres can be useful for additional workstations, larger seating or clearer separation between different activity areas.
If you do not need the additional depth, a 5m x 4m garden room or office already provides a substantial workspace and may make better use of your garden and budget.
5m x 5m or 6m x 5m Garden Room?
A true 6m x 5m footprint provides approximately 30 square metres compared with around 25 square metres for 5m x 5m. That additional five square metres can be worthwhile where several people will work in the room or where you want a substantial meeting, leisure or storage area as well.
You can compare our 6m x 5m garden rooms and offices if the additional length would be genuinely useful.
Can a 5m x 5m Garden Room Include Separate Storage?
Selected bespoke garden room ranges can incorporate an additional storage section or separate room. On a building of this scale, that can be a practical way to keep bicycles, garden equipment or tools away from the main office, studio or leisure area.
If separate storage matters, discuss it before ordering so the internal division, doors, windows and overall dimensions can be designed around both uses from the beginning.
Preparing the Base for a 5m x 5m Garden Room
A large garden room needs a firm, flat and level foundation suitable for the exact building. Do not arrange a base using the nominal 5m x 5m category title because the products shown on this page vary substantially in their actual dimensions.
Always work from the manufacturer’s precise measurements for the building you order and confirm the foundation requirements before construction begins.
See Large Garden Rooms Before You Buy
Even after more than four decades around garden buildings, I still recommend seeing them in person whenever practical. With a room of this size, viewing representative buildings can help you understand the scale, construction and differences between specifications much better than photographs alone.
You can visit our Surrey display site at Sutton Green Garden Centre, Whitmoor Lane, Sutton Green, Guildford, GU4 7QA. We cannot display every model in every size, so please contact us before making a special journey if there is a particular Platinum Winchester garden room you want to inspect.
5m x 5m Garden Rooms – Frequently Asked Questions
How big is a 5m x 5m garden room?
A true 5m x 5m footprint covers approximately 25 square metres, or around 269 square feet. Exact external and internal dimensions vary between individual models, so always check the product specification before ordering.
Does every garden room on this page measure exactly 5m x 5m?
No. Fleet, Odiham and Kingclere currently extend to approximately 4.8m x 3.6m, while Winchester offers much broader sizing and extends to approximately 8.4m x 4.8m. If you specifically want a large near-square room, compare the actual dimensions carefully.
Which range should I consider if I genuinely want close to 5m x 5m?
I would look particularly closely at Platinum Winchester because it offers the broadest current size flexibility. Its maximum listed depth is approximately 4.8m, so confirm the precise dimensions you need before preparing the base.
Can several people work in a 5m x 5m garden office?
Yes. A room genuinely close to 5m x 5m can accommodate several workstations together with storage and potentially a meeting or seating area. The final capacity depends on the furniture and equipment you choose.
Can I buy an insulated 5m x 5m garden room?
Yes. For a large room approaching this footprint, Platinum Winchester is particularly relevant and can be specified with a full insulation and internal lining package. Fleet and Odiham are fully insulated as standard but are available in substantially smaller maximum dimensions.
Is a 5m x 5m garden room suitable for more than an office?
Yes. A large square or near-square room can work well as a studio, gym, games room, entertainment space or as a combination of office and leisure uses.
Why choose 1st Choice for a 5m x 5m garden room?
1st Choice Leisure Buildings is a family business backed by my first-hand garden building experience since 1979 and Craig’s carpentry training and industry experience since 1992. With a room of this scale, that experience helps us explain which products genuinely approach the dimensions you require and advise on specification, insulation, layout and practical installation rather than treating every result as interchangeable.
