Choosing a 10×7 Shed

A 10×7 shed gives you a useful amount of garden storage without automatically moving into a much larger workshop. The nominal 10ft x 7ft footprint is approximately 3.0m x 2.1m and gives you around 70 square feet of floor area, although exact external and internal dimensions vary between individual buildings. I’m Robin Antill, founder of 1st Choice Leisure Buildings, and sheds are where my working life in garden buildings began in 1979. After more than 45 years in the trade, I still believe the right shed should be chosen by looking carefully at its construction, layout and what you genuinely need it to do rather than simply buying the cheapest building of approximately the right size.

A 10ft x 7ft shed gives you enough depth to combine shelving and storage around the walls with a sensible central access area. It can work well for garden tools, bikes, gardening equipment and DIY storage, but I would still measure the larger items you intend to keep inside before ordering.

Is a 7×10 Shed the Same as a 10×7 Shed?

You may see a 10×7 shed described as a 7×10 shed or 10ft x 7ft shed. These descriptions usually refer to broadly the same nominal footprint with the dimensions reversed, but always check which measurement represents the frontage and which represents the depth. Door position, windows and roof orientation can make a considerable difference to how practical the building is in your garden.

The Four 10×7 Sheds Currently Shown on This Page

The current page displays four Diamond sheds: Chichester Pent, Woodgate Reverse Apex, Barnham Apex and Barnham Pent. All four have published size ranges that genuinely cover a 10ft x 7ft requirement, so these are the products I would concentrate on rather than introducing unrelated Sapphire or Platinum ranges.

All four currently show free fitting and a colour paint finish option. The Chichester Pent and Woodgate Reverse Apex also show bespoke options, while the Barnham Apex and Barnham Pent carry the range-level double-door wording for sizes 8ft and over.

Diamond Chichester Pent 10×7 Shed

The Diamond Chichester Pent has a published range from 4ft x 4ft to 24ft x 12ft, so a 10×7 shed sits comfortably within its available sizes. It currently shows free fitting, a colour paint finish option and bespoke options.

The single-slope pent roof may suit you if you prefer that appearance or want the roof to work alongside a particular wall, fence or boundary. I would also think carefully about the position of the door and windows because those details affect how much uninterrupted wall space you have for shelving and larger equipment.

The bespoke options can be genuinely useful. Moving a door or window may improve access or give you a much better wall for storage. I wouldn’t alter the standard design simply because you can, but a change that solves a real practical problem is worth considering.

Woodgate Reverse Apex 10×7 Shed

The Woodgate Reverse Apex also has a published range from 4ft x 4ft to 24ft x 12ft and currently shows free fitting, a colour paint finish option and bespoke options. Its reverse apex arrangement gives you a different roof and entrance layout from the Chichester Pent.

On a 10ft x 7ft shed, orientation matters. Think about the direction from which you will approach the building, which walls you want available for shelves and where larger equipment needs to stand. The Woodgate’s bespoke flexibility can help where the standard layout doesn’t quite suit the garden.

Diamond Barnham Apex and Barnham Pent

The Diamond Barnham Apex and Barnham Pent have published ranges from 6ft x 4ft to 28ft x 12ft, so both genuinely cover a 10ft x 7ft shed requirement. Both currently show free fitting and a colour paint finish option.

The main difference is roof style. The Barnham Apex gives you the familiar traditional pitched roof, while the Barnham Pent provides a single-slope roof. Which one is right for you comes down to appearance, position in the garden and how you intend to use the internal space.

The Barnham range information refers to double doors on sizes 8ft and over. If wide access is particularly important because you intend to store bikes, machinery or other larger equipment, I would check the exact door specification of your chosen 10×7 configuration before ordering rather than relying solely on the general range wording.

Why My Experience With Sheds Matters

I think customers should know who is behind the advice they are reading. I left school at 15 and started my own garden building business in 1979, trading as Marina Sheds. I was hands-on from the beginning, manufacturing and selling timber sheds, so I learnt about garden buildings by actually working with timber and dealing directly with customers rather than simply reading specifications in a catalogue.

That manufacturing background still influences how I judge a shed today. An attractive door, window or paint finish naturally catches your eye, but I also look at the timber, framing, floor, roof, glazing and how the complete building has been put together. Two sheds can look very similar in photographs and still be quite different when you examine their construction properly.

I sold Marina Sheds in 1990. Unfortunately, I didn’t receive all the money I was due from the sale. It was a difficult business lesson, but it certainly didn’t end my involvement with garden buildings.

In 1992 we expanded beyond sheds and added summerhouses, garages, garden rooms and log cabins. Marina Sheds no longer properly described the wider business, so that change in direction also meant a change of name and we became Titan Garden Buildings.

My son Craig joined me in 1992 after studying carpentry at Guildford College from 1990. His carpentry training brought additional practical woodworking and timber-construction knowledge into a business already built around manufacturing and selling garden buildings.

We sold Titan Garden Buildings in 1998 and, in 2000, Craig and I decided to take a different approach. Rather than manufacturing everything ourselves or being restricted to one manufacturer’s products, we wanted to use our experience to select quality garden buildings from manufacturers we trusted and give customers a genuine choice. That decision led us to form 1st Choice Leisure Buildings.

Craig now runs the day-to-day business and I continue to support him and the team as required. I’ve been involved with sheds and garden buildings since 1979, and I believe that experience matters because I’ve seen the industry from both sides: first manufacturing and selling timber buildings ourselves and later comparing products from different manufacturers for our customers.

What More Than 45 Years Has Taught Me About Sheds

More than 45 years around sheds has taught me that size and price alone don’t tell you whether a building represents good value. A 10×7 shed is large enough for the quality of the timber, framing, floor, roof, doors, glazing and fitting to matter. I would rather see somebody choose the right building once than save a little initially and regret the decision afterwards.

Construction Matters on a 10×7 Shed

The current 10×7 category highlights quality redwood timber with at least nominal 2×2 framing and timber floor and roof construction. The site also confirms toughened glass on its Diamond buildings, which is relevant here because all four actual products currently shown are from the Diamond range. These are exactly the sorts of practical construction details I encourage customers to examine rather than choosing solely from an attractive photograph or headline price.

Specifications can still vary between individual models and configurations, so compare the exact building you are considering rather than assuming every 10ft x 7ft shed is constructed in precisely the same way. Look carefully at the timber, framing, floor, roof, doors and glazing as well as the appearance.

Making the Most of a 10×7 Shed

A 10ft x 7ft shed gives you useful space for garden tools, bikes, lawn equipment, gardening supplies and other outdoor items while still leaving scope for shelving and wall storage. The seven-foot depth makes the building easier to organise than a narrow shed and can also leave room for a small workbench or practical hobby area.

Hooks and shelves can make good use of the walls while keeping the centre clear. I would avoid filling every available inch because a shed is much more useful when you can reach equipment at the back without unloading everything in front of it.

Bespoke Options on the Chichester and Woodgate

The Diamond Chichester Pent and Woodgate Reverse Apex currently show bespoke options. On a 7×10 shed, changing a door or window position may create a longer uninterrupted wall for shelving or improve access from the part of the garden where you naturally approach the building.

I would decide what needs to go inside first and then think about whether a bespoke alteration adds genuine practical value. Customisation should solve a problem rather than simply add another option to the order.

Free Fitting on All Four Sheds

All four products currently displayed show free fitting. The 10×7 category information also states that these wooden sheds include free assembly subject to delivery restrictions and a suitable prepared base. I think professional fitting is worthwhile because even a well-made shed needs to be erected correctly if the floor, roof and doors are going to perform as intended.

Free fitting still requires suitable access. If the route from the road into your garden is narrow, restricted or awkward, tell us before ordering rather than waiting until fitting day.

Get the Base Right

A 10×7 shed needs proper support across its complete footprint. An uneven or unsuitable foundation can affect how the building sits, how well the floor is supported and how correctly the doors operate, so I would never regard the base as an afterthought.

If you need help preparing the site, take a look at our garden building base and additional services. Getting the groundwork right before the shed arrives is considerably easier than trying to correct problems afterwards.

Colour Paint Finish Options

All four sheds currently displayed show a colour paint finish option. A building around ten feet long and seven feet deep has enough visual presence for the finish to make a noticeable difference, particularly if it sits close to the house, patio or a prominent part of the garden.

Colours shown online can vary because of photography, lighting and different screens. If an exact shade is important, check the current colour information or obtain a sample before making your final choice.

See Sheds Before You Buy

I have encouraged customers to inspect sheds before buying for many years. Photographs can show style and colour, but they cannot completely tell you how substantial a floor feels, how a door operates or what the timber and framing are like when you see them close up.

You are welcome to visit our Surrey garden building display site at Sutton Green, near Guildford and Woking. We can’t display every model in every possible size, but seeing representative sheds gives you the opportunity to compare construction and finishes before making your decision.

Take your time, look closely and ask questions. We don’t believe in high-pressure selling. I started my first shed business in 1979 and I still believe that seeing what you’re buying and understanding the specification are two of the best ways to make an informed decision.

Which 10×7 Shed Should You Choose?

If you want a pent roof together with bespoke flexibility, look closely at the Diamond Chichester Pent. If you prefer a reverse apex layout and bespoke options, consider the Woodgate Reverse Apex. If you want to compare a traditional apex roof with a pent roof within the Barnham range, look at the Barnham Apex and Barnham Pent.

There isn’t one best 10×7 shed for everybody. The right choice depends on roof style, door arrangement, bespoke flexibility, construction and how you genuinely intend to use the building. Start with those practical requirements rather than simply comparing headline prices.

My Advice Before You Order

Mark out approximately 10ft x 7ft in your garden, measure the items you intend to store and check the precise external dimensions, door arrangement and window positions of your preferred model. Make sure you have a suitable firm, flat and level base and adequate access from the road to the position where the building will stand.

If you’re unsure which 10ft x 7ft shed is right for you, please contact us. Tell Craig, me or one of the team what you need to store, how much room you have and where the shed will stand. We’ll help you compare the four actual products currently shown on this page and choose the building that makes sense for you.
