Why Trust 1st Choice Leisure Buildings?

Choosing a garden building is an investment, so it's important to buy from a company you can rely on. At 1st Choice Leisure Buildings, we've been helping customers find the right garden sheds, summerhouses, log cabins, garden offices and workshops since 1979 when Robin Antill opened the doors. As a family-run business, we believe in offering honest advice rather than a hard sell. We take the time to understand what you need and help you choose a building that suits your garden, your budget and the way you plan to use it.

Our approach is reflected in our 4.9 Trustpilot rating, where customers regularly mention our friendly, helpful service. We only work with manufacturers we trust, selecting buildings that offer good quality, durability and value for money. Most are made from FSC®-certified timber and built to cope with the British weather. If you'd rather see a building before you buy, you're welcome to visit one of the UK's largest garden building display sites.

1st Choice – Known For Quality – Loved For Design - Since 1979

Being able to compare different models and talk things through with our experienced team helps many customers make the right decision. Since 1979, we've supplied over 50,000 buildings across the UK, building our reputation on quality products, straightforward advice and customer service you can depend on. We are always available to meet your needs or requirements so contact us NOW if you would like help or advice.

We live quite far away; is it really worth visiting our show rooms? Absolutely!

We strongly urge anyone looking for a new building – whether it's a new garden shed, summerhouse, workshop, garage, or a full garden room – to visit and inspect the quality in person before committing to any purchase.

Seeing the craftsmanship, materials and finishes for yourself is the best way to make a confident and informed decision.

Whilst we cannot display everything we offer, we have carefully selected around 80 different buildings that allow us to demonstrate almost every feature, design option, and construction detail in one form or another.

This allows you to compare styles, sizes and specifications, ask any questions you may have, and find the building that best suits your needs.

So, yes, it is absolutely worth visiting. Click here to see what buildings on display.

If you are unsure then why not walk through our site virtually using our walk through tour below (or click here to open in a new full screen window).

Choosing a 44mm Timber Garden Cabin

A 44mm timber garden cabin is a strong choice when you want something more substantial than a lightweight seasonal garden building. The 44mm measurement refers to the thickness of the interlocking timber wall boards, giving the building a solid feel and making this specification particularly well suited to garden offices, hobby rooms, studios, entertaining spaces, gyms and comfortable garden retreats. After selling garden buildings since 1979, the best choice is not simply the largest building or the lowest price; it is the specification that suits how you genuinely intend to use the space.

Wall thickness is only one part of a good building. When comparing 44mm cabins, look carefully at the floor, roof, doors, windows, base, roof covering and installation specification as well. Our 44mm range includes double-glazed doors and windows and a real wooden floor, while additional options can be selected according to the particular model and intended use.

What Does 44mm Wall Thickness Actually Mean?

The 44mm specification describes the thickness of the machined timber forming the interlocking external walls. These profiled boards slot together to create the main structure of the building. In practical terms, 44mm walls provide a substantial timber envelope that is suitable for customers expecting to spend meaningful amounts of time inside their garden building rather than simply using it for basic storage.

It is important not to judge comfort from wall thickness alone. Roof and floor construction, glazing, draught control, ventilation, orientation and any additional thermal upgrades all affect how a garden building feels throughout the seasons. If regular cold-weather use is important, please tell us before ordering so that we can help you consider the complete specification rather than concentrating on one measurement.

Who Is a 44mm Garden Cabin Best Suited To?

Shows image of 44mm thick log cabin

In our experience, 44mm construction is particularly attractive to homeowners who want a versatile garden room without stepping straight into a more complex building specification. It provides a useful balance of substantial timber construction, attractive traditional appearance and flexibility of use.

Home Working

For occasional or regular home working, 44mm walls combined with good glazing create a much more substantial environment than a basic garden shed. Think about desk position, natural light, electrical sockets, internet access, heating and where the doors open before deciding on the final design. Our team can also discuss electrical work and associated services through our garden building services.

Hobbies and Creative Work

A 44mm cabin can make an excellent art room, craft space, music practice room or workshop for lighter hobbies. When choosing the design, consider the wall space you need for furniture and shelving as well as the amount of glazing. The model with the most windows is not necessarily the most practical if you need uninterrupted walls for storage, desks or equipment.

Relaxing and Entertaining

If the building is mainly for relaxing, reading or entertaining, concentrate on the view from inside as much as its appearance from the garden. Door position, window position, roof style and orientation can completely change how enjoyable the finished room is. Where possible, mark the proposed footprint on the ground before buying so you can understand both the internal space and how the building will sit within the garden.

Exercise and Fitness

For a home gym or exercise room, check internal dimensions and height carefully and make sure there is sufficient floor strength and ventilation for the equipment and activity planned. Large exercise equipment can require considerably more usable space than its footprint suggests once safe movement around it is allowed for.

44mm Cabin Comparison: What Should You Compare?

Do not compare two garden cabins using headline price and wall thickness alone. A cheaper-looking building may have important items excluded from its advertised price. In contrast, a seemingly more expensive building can represent better value when glazing, flooring and other essential elements are already included. We recommend comparing complete specifications on a like-for-like basis.

Wall Construction

Confirm that the quoted wall measurement refers to the actual machined wallboard and understand how the interlocking system is formed. Good machining and accurately fitting joints are important because the walls need to assemble correctly while allowing natural timber movement.

Doors and Windows

Check whether glazing is single or double, what material the frames are manufactured from, how doors are secured and whether the opening arrangement works with your furniture layout. Double glazing is included as standard across our 44mm range, although exact door and window specifications can vary between models.

Floor Specification

Ask whether a floor is actually included in the advertised building price and what it is manufactured from. Our 44mm cabins include a wooden floor, so you don’t have to discover that an important part of the building is an additional purchase after comparing prices.

Roof Construction and Covering

The roof protects everything underneath it, so consider both the timber roof construction and the external roof covering. Different coverings have different appearances, costs and expected service lives. Also think about rainwater management, nearby trees and whether you will be able to inspect and maintain the roof safely in future.

Base and Ground Preparation

A well-built cabin cannot compensate for a poor foundation. The base needs to provide stable, level support appropriate to the size and weight of the building. Sloping, cracked or unsuitable existing bases should be assessed before installation. We can discuss several solutions through our base building and garden building services.

Assembly

Decide whether you genuinely want to construct the building yourself or would prefer experienced installers to do it. Interlocking timber construction is logical, but larger buildings contain heavy components and correct assembly is important for doors, windows, roofing and long-term performance. Optional installation is available on our 44mm range.

After-Sales Support

A garden building is a long-term purchase, so consider who will answer your questions after the order has been placed. Established suppliers should be able to explain access requirements, bases, assembly, maintenance and specification before you commit. You can read more practical advice in our garden building buying tips and how-to guides.

A Simple 44mm Cabin Buying Checklist

Before you order, it’s worth spending ten minutes thinking about how you’ll actually use the cabin. Will it be a garden office, hobby room, home gym or simply somewhere to relax? Once you’ve settled on its purpose, check the space you have available, decide where you’d like the doors and windows, think about how much natural light you want, and whether you prefer an apex or pent roof. It’s also worth considering whether your base is ready, if you’ll need power running to the building, and whether you’d like us to install it for you. Getting these points clear from the start makes it much easier to compare cabins and helps avoid paying extra for features you don’t really need.

One thing people often overlook is access into the garden. We’ve seen plenty of deliveries where the cabin itself wasn’t the problem — getting the timber to the base was. Measure any gates, look out for narrow paths, steps, sharp corners, walls or fences, and think about where the delivery vehicle can park. If you’re not sure, give us a call before you order. We’d much rather talk it through beforehand than find there’s a problem on delivery day.

Common Mistakes When Buying a 44mm Cabin

Choosing by External Size Alone

People naturally start with overall dimensions, but usable internal space is what matters once furniture is inside. Allow room for doors to open, chairs to pull away from desks, storage cupboards, exercise equipment and comfortable movement. A few extra centimetres on paper can make an unexpectedly large difference to everyday usability.

Assuming Thicker Walls Solve Everything

44mm timber gives you a substantial wall structure, but wall thickness is not the only factor governing comfort. A customer planning to work inside for long periods during colder months should think about the entire building envelope, particularly the floor, roof, glazing, draught reduction and heating strategy.

Buying Before Checking the Base

An uneven base can cause problems throughout a timber building. Doors may become difficult to operate, floors can feel uneven, and the structure may not sit correctly. Base preparation should therefore be considered at the start of the project rather than a few days before delivery.

Forgetting Maintenance Access

Timber needs looking after. Avoid positioning a building so tightly between fences, hedges and walls that you cannot inspect or maintain the exterior. Leaving sensible working space around the building makes future treatment, repairs and general upkeep considerably easier.

Comparing Headline Prices Instead of Complete Prices

Look beyond the first price you see. Check whether the floor, glazing, roof covering, delivery, treatment, installation and base are included or optional. Write down the complete specification and final project cost for each building you compare; otherwise you may unknowingly be comparing very different products.

Not Thinking About the Building’s Position

The same cabin can feel very different depending on where it faces. Think about morning and afternoon sun, the outlook from the windows, privacy from neighbouring properties, prevailing weather and the route you will walk from the house. For an office, strong afternoon sunlight directly through large windows may be less desirable than it initially appears.

Ordering Without Seeing Quality First

It’s easy to be swayed by good photography, but pictures only tell part of the story. They won’t show you how solid the framing feels, how thick the timber really is, whether the doors open and close properly, or the standard of the machining and finish. If you can, it’s always worth seeing a garden building in person before you buy. You can visit our Surrey garden building display site, have a proper look around, compare different models, and ask us any questions before making your decision.

The Base Is Part of the Building

One of the most important lessons we have learned from decades of supplying garden buildings is that the foundation should never be treated as an afterthought. The cabin needs a firm, stable and level surface capable of supporting the structure properly. The most suitable solution depends on the existing ground, size of building, slope, drainage, access and intended use.

If you already have paving or concrete, do not automatically assume it is suitable. Check its dimensions, condition and level. An existing slab that slopes badly, has significant cracks or extends in an unsuitable way around the building may require remedial work or another base solution. Our additional services page explains some of the base systems available.

Planning the Inside Before You Order

Draw a simple floor plan before choosing the final cabin. Mark desks, sofas, shelving, exercise equipment, or workbenches to scale, then add the door swing and walking routes. This simple exercise often reveals whether you need a different size, more wall space or a different door and window arrangement.

For electrical installations, decide approximately where sockets, lighting and equipment will be required before the building is installed. Planning cable routes and electrical requirements early is normally easier than trying to adapt the finished space afterwards. An appropriately qualified person should carry out electrical work.

Timber Movement and Why It Matters

Timber is a natural material and reacts to changes in moisture and temperature. Interlocking wall boards therefore need to be able to settle and move in the manner intended by the building’s design. Do not permanently restrict the wall logs with inappropriate internal fixings, shelving systems or modifications without first checking how they should be installed.

Small changes in timber appearance and movement are normal characteristics of a natural building rather than evidence that timber behaves like masonry or plastic. Good installation, correct maintenance and following the manufacturer’s instructions are important parts of successful long-term ownership.

Looking After Your 44mm Timber Cabin

Exterior timber needs protection from weather and ultraviolet light. Follow the treatment or coating manufacturer’s maintenance recommendations and inspect exposed elevations periodically. Pay particular attention to lower wall areas, doors, windows, roof edges and any location where plants or stored objects prevent air circulation.

Keep vegetation away from the external walls, remove accumulated leaves and debris and deal with any drainage or roof-covering issue promptly. Regular small maintenance jobs are considerably easier and less costly than waiting for water-related deterioration to develop.

Delivery and Access

It’s worth taking a few minutes to think about access before you order. We’ve found that long lengths of timber can be awkward to move, especially if they need to go through narrow gateways, between buildings or around tight corners. A quick check now can save a lot of hassle on delivery day.

Delivery availability depends on both the product and where you live, so it’s always worth checking our delivery areas. If you’re unsure whether access might be a problem, give us a call. We’ve been doing this for years and are usually able to advise before you place your order.

Why View a 44mm Cabin Before Buying?

If you have only ever compared garden buildings on a screen, seeing several specifications side by side can be extremely useful. You can feel the difference in materials, walk through different floor areas, operate doors and windows and see how roof styles affect internal appearance. It also makes it easier to judge whether a building that looks large in photographs actually provides the space you need.

Our display site is at Sutton Green Garden Centre between Guildford and Woking in Surrey. Details, directions and current visitor information can be found on our garden building showroom page.

Frequently Asked Questions About 44mm Timber Garden Cabins

What does 44mm mean on a garden cabin?

44mm refers to the thickness of the interlocking timber boards used to form the main external walls. It describes the wall construction rather than the total thickness of the complete roof, floor or any additional thermal layers.

Is 44mm a good wall thickness?

For many customers, yes. We regard 44mm as a substantial and versatile timber wall specification for a garden office, hobby space, studio, exercise area or leisure room. The right specification still depends on intended use, building size, location and the level of comfort you expect.

Can a 44mm cabin be used as a garden office?

Yes, 44mm construction can work very well for a garden office. Consider the whole specification, including double glazing, floor and roof construction, heating, ventilation, electrics, internet connection and desk orientation. For regular colder-weather use, discuss additional thermal measures before ordering.

Does a thicker timber wall automatically make a cabin suitable for winter?

No. Wall thickness contributes to the performance of the structure, but heat is also lost through the roof, floor, doors and windows. Draughts, ventilation, heating and frequency of use matter too. Customers expecting regular winter use should consider the complete building specification.

Are double glazed windows included?

Double glazing is standard across the 44mm range shown in this category, although the exact style, dimensions and construction of doors and windows vary between individual models. Always check the product specification before ordering.

Is a wooden floor included?

The models within our 44mm range include a real wooden floor. Because specifications can differ between manufacturers and suppliers, we recommend checking precisely what is included whenever you compare prices elsewhere.

What base does a 44mm cabin need?

The building requires a firm, stable and level base suitable for its dimensions and weight. The correct solution depends on ground conditions, slope, drainage and existing surfaces. If you are unsure whether your existing base is suitable, ask for advice before arranging delivery.

Can you arrange a base?

Base-building solutions can be arranged in appropriate areas and circumstances. Our garden building services page explains the available options and our team can advise which approach is appropriate for your site.

Can you assemble the cabin for me?

Professional assembly is available as an option across this range. Availability and pricing depend on the chosen building, delivery location, access and site conditions, so check the individual product or speak with our team before ordering.

How much space should I leave around the outside?

Leave enough room to construct, inspect, treat and maintain the external walls safely. The exact clearance needed depends on the design and site, but squeezing a timber building tightly against fences, hedges or masonry can make maintenance unnecessarily difficult and can restrict airflow.

How often will the timber need treating?

There is no single maintenance interval suitable for every coating and location. Exposure to sunlight, rain, vegetation and local conditions all affect durability. Follow the treatment manufacturer’s instructions and inspect the exterior regularly rather than relying solely on a fixed number of years between maintenance.

Can electrics be installed?

Yes. Lighting, sockets, heating and connectivity are common requirements for offices, studios and hobby rooms. Electrical work should be planned around your intended furniture and equipment and completed by an appropriately qualified electrician. We can discuss electrical services as part of the wider project.

Should I choose the cabin before checking my garden?

We recommend doing the opposite. Measure the available area, inspect the ground, check access, consider sunlight and privacy and decide how you will use the finished space before choosing the final model. Matching the building to the site usually produces a better result than trying to make the site fit a cabin selected purely from photographs.

Can I see examples before ordering?

Yes. We strongly encourage customers who can reasonably visit us to inspect garden buildings in person. Our Surrey display site allows you to examine construction details, compare sizes and talk through your requirements with experienced staff.

What should I ask when comparing two 44mm cabins?

Ask what the quoted price actually includes. Compare wall specification, floor material, roof construction, roof covering, doors, glazing, locks, treatment requirements, delivery, assembly and base preparation. Then compare the complete project price rather than simply choosing the lowest headline figure.

Advice From a Garden Building Company Established in 1979

We have been supplying garden buildings since 1979, and one lesson remains constant: the right building is the one that suits the customer, the garden and the intended use. Specification matters, but so do honest measurements, a suitable base, practical access and realistic expectations about maintenance. We would rather help you work through those details before ordering than have you discover afterwards that a different design would have suited you better.

If you are comparing models and are unsure about size, base preparation, access or specification, read our top buying tips, browse our garden building guides, visit the display site or contact 1st Choice Leisure Buildings for practical advice before placing your order.
