The benefits of multi-room log cabins in UK gardens are tremendous. Once you get yours, you’ll wonder how you ever lived without it.
Log cabins are a great way to give your home and plot a more traditional feel. These attractive wooden structures are a handsome addition to any outdoor space.
Multi-room log cabins are made to last (even through appalling British winters). And they have multiple rooms, giving you added flexibility you can’t get from a conventional shed. Use them for drinks, office space, gyms, spas and more.
Log cabins can increase the value of your property by making your home more attractive to buyers. Additional outbuildings give them more freedom and help them imagine how they’d use your home.
Finally, multi-room log cabins are cost-effective compared to extensions. You don’t have to hire contractors for weeks and invest in new foundations, masonry, and roofing. Get everything you need in a single unit.
Buying a log cabin can be a fantastic addition to your home. But it needs to go in the right spot. A poor location can spoil your enjoyment and even damage the structure.
Start by considering access—how you’ll get to the cabin. Don’t choose somewhere inconvenient, involving getting your shoes covered in mud. You want somewhere close to utility hookups and on flat ground.
Next, consider the drainage. Is the area where you want to place the cabin prone to standing water or flooding? If so, choose somewhere else. The ideal location is a patch of land on a slight slope down to a watercourse. A gentle gradient helps drain water and prevents waterlogging.
Ground conditions are another consideration in some areas. You need somewhere to lay a base and sub-base without rainwater or subsidence washing it away.
Finally, think about tree cover and prevailing winds. Is the cabin at the location at risk of damage from falling branches?
Putting your log cabin in the wrong place can prevent it from helping you. You want something functional and comfortable without compromising your goals.
For example, if you want to use the cabin for views over your garden, placing it in a high spot with a line of sight to your bushes and flower beds makes sense. Similarly, orienting the windows to face east is a good idea if you want to work out in it as the sun rises.
Suppose you need advice about whether you will need planning permission. In that case, we can help, as we have been in the garden building business for over 45 years.
At 1st Choice Leisure Buildings, we offer a range of multi-room log cabins to complement your garden. These come in a range of sizes, styles, and finishes, including the following:
As for the layout, we offer three options:
2-room log cabins offer two internal chambers for relaxing, unwinding, and enjoying leisure time in your garden. You can use rooms for storage, temporary sleeping, or as a guest house (subject to obtaining appropriate permissions).
Our 3-room log cabins are even more versatile, offering hobby rooms, weekend workshops, lounge areas, extra cupboards, and cosy garden rooms. Use these if you need added functionality.
Finally, we offer a log cabin with a shed attached for ultimate practicality. These provide the ultimate convenience, allowing you to combine your outbuildings into a single unit.
When shopping for log cabins, always ask whether they are double-glazed and include floors . 1st Choice Leisure Buildings supplies all units with quality fittings and materials, including double-glazing and kiln-dried floors to keep you warm.
Also, ask your supplier what roofing material they use. 1st Choice uses felt shingles on most apex buildings with optional EPDM on pent models for exceptional protection against the elements.
Installing our log cabins is incredibly straightforward, particularly if you already have a base. Here’s what happens:
- Prepare the foundations. Most units stand on concrete or stone slabs with an aggregate sub-base.
- Construct the floors and walls. Some log cabins come with pre-fitted floors, while others require assembly on-site. Once the flooring is in place, wall construction can go ahead.
- Construct the roof. Fitting the roof makes the cabin weatherproof. 1st Choice uses high-quality materials, such as shingles or EPDM, not just cheap roofing felt.
- Add doors and windows. Doors and windows are next. 1st Choice supplies them bespoke to your cabin design for the perfect fit.
- Finishing touches. The final steps include adding guttering, cabin door accessories, electrical hookups, plumbing, air conditioning, heating, and furniture. Once you’ve done that, you can start using the unit full-time.
Some people choose to DIY their log cabin shed. However, it could take a long time, and you may need more essential tools. You might also hurt yourself when lifting heavy panels or using cutting tools.
Hiring professionals circumvents these problems. You can rely on their expertise to complete the log cabin rapidly, ready for you to move in. Professionals know the safety precautions to take and can work efficiently, preventing the installation from taking all week.
We also offer a paint service, the results of which you can see on our website. We offer limestone blue-white, French grey, cloverleaf green, marina blue-white, jungle green, burlesque, spicy brown, lapis lazuli, and many other colour options. You can even choose more than one colour.

- Restain and reseal your log cabin every three years or so (and more often if you live in an area with highly variable weather)
- Wash the exteriors every year with mild soap and warm water
- Check the interior of the cabin for pest damage
- Provide proper guttering and drainage to prevent standing water from warping the wood
- Keep vegetation away from the walls and flooring
- Inspect the foundation, checking for cracks

Any issues getting a big cabin into a Woking garden?
Honestly, not usually. Everything comes in pieces. As long as we can get down the side of the house or have other clear passage through we can normally manage. can usually The only thing that sometimes causes hassle in Woking is parking for deliveries. Some roads are tight. As long as we know beforehand, we can often work around it.
-
Can I use one room as a guest space and another as an office in Guildford?
Yes, that’s what loads of people do. Office in the big room, sofa bed in the smaller room — job done. Works really well because you can close one space off from the other. If it’s occasional guests, no problem. If you’re thinking about someone living out there full-time, that’s when planning comes into it. But for the odd sleepover or friend staying a night or two, it's not normally a problem.

Do I need planning permission for a multi-room log cabin in Guildford?
-
How do I pick the right layout for a two- or three-room cabin in Woking?
It depends on what you’re actually doing with it. A lot of people start off thinking they need loads of little rooms, but once it’s built, they realise small rooms just feel cramped. Most of the Woking jobs we do work better with one decent-sized main room and then a smaller one off to the side for storage, a quiet office, or a place to hide the messy stuff. If you’re planning a gym in one room and an office in another, think about ceiling height, plug sockets, heaters, and where you’re going to sit or put equipment. Layout matters more than people think — once the walls are up, moving things is a pain.

How much do groundwork, electrics and plumbing add in Surrey?
-
Is the insulation good enough for year-round use in Surrey
Yes — as long as you’ve got
proper insulation in the roof and floor. That’s where most of the heat goes. With that done, a small electric heater will keep the place warm in winter. We’ve been inside these cabins on cold January mornings in Surrey, and they’re perfectly usable, especially the multi-room ones, because you can shut doors and just heat the bit you’re in. If you’re planning to be out there all day, like a home office, definitely go for better glazing — it makes a big difference to comfort.

What base and power supply do I need in Ripley?
Ripley soil can be a bit mixed — some gardens are lovely and firm, others are basically spongy. A simple
level concrete base works on all of them. Doesn’t need to be overkill, just level and wide enough so the cabin sits properly. If the ground’s soft, we dig down a bit more so it doesn’t move over winter. For power, all you need is an armoured cable from the house. Same thing we put in for most cabins.
A qualified spark connects it, signs it off, and you’re sorted. Plenty for lights, heaters, a computer, whatever you're running. Only go fancy if you’re adding showers or kitchen bits… which most people don’t.
-
What maintenance do I need to think about for a multi-room cabin in Ripley?
Keep the paint or stain fresh. Every couple of years, give it a once-over — doesn’t need to be perfect, just don’t let the wood go bare. Also, don’t let bushes or big plants grow right up against the walls — they trap moisture. Aside from that, there’s not really much to do. These things last a very long time if you look after them just a little bit.
-
What wall thickness and glazing do people usually pick in Surrey?
Most people go for 44mm or 70mm logs, especially for larger cabins. Thinner walls can feel a bit lightweight on multi-room builds. Double glazing is almost standard now — it keeps the place warm and quiet. If you’re going to use it all day, especially if you're working from home, it’s worth
choosing better insulation. Costs a bit more, but you feel the benefit every day.
