Choosing a 4m x 4m Summer House

A 4m x 4m summer house gives you a generous square garden room of approximately 13ft x 13ft, making it a useful size for relaxing, hobbies, entertaining, a studio or home working. I’m Robin Antill, founder of 1st Choice Leisure Buildings. After working with timber garden buildings since 1979, a building around this size gives you considerable freedom inside without necessarily becoming too dominant in a larger garden.

With a summerhouse of this size, I would look beyond the headline dimensions and appearance. Construction, insulation, glazing, doors, windows and the exact dimensions available for the individual model all matter. Products in this category come in different size ranges, so always check the specifications for the particular building you are considering.

Are All the Summerhouses Exactly 4m x 4m?

No. The 4m x 4m summerhouse category brings together relevant larger summerhouses, but their published size ranges vary. If you specifically need a building around 4m x 4m, the Platinum Winchester Apex, Winchester Pent, Winchester Transverse and Highclere Apex are particularly relevant because their published ranges extend beyond 4m in both dimensions.

The Winchester Apex, Winchester Pent and Winchester Transverse extend up to approximately 8.4m x 4.8m, while the Highclere Apex extends to approximately 4.8m x 4.2m. Other products displayed have smaller maximum dimensions, so don’t assume that every model appearing here can be ordered at precisely 4.0m x 4.0m.

The Summerhouses Currently Shown on This Page

The Diamond summerhouses currently displayed are the Bolney Georgian, Worthing Corner, Keymer Contemporary, Washington Classic and Ashington. These provide a mixture of conventional and corner designs, and all five currently show a colour paint finish and bespoke options.

The Platinum products displayed are the Highclere Apex, Twyford Pent, Hamble Corner, Apex Fleet, Pent Odiham, Kingclere Apex, Bursledon Corner, Winchester Transverse, Winchester Pent and Winchester Apex. Between them, you have apex, pent, corner, and transverse designs, with different insulation specifications.

The Eversley Corner Shed and Storrington Corner Shed also appear in the current product grid, but these are storage buildings rather than summerhouses. The Eversley has a published size range up to approximately 3.0m x 3.0m and the Storrington up to approximately 2.7m x 2.7m, so neither is a genuine 4m x 4m summerhouse. If your priority is a leisure room, office or hobby space, I would concentrate on the actual summerhouse models.

Which Models Suit a Genuine 4m x 4m Requirement?

If you specifically need a 4m x 4m summer house, I would begin by comparing the Platinum Winchester Apex, Winchester Pent, Winchester Transverse and Highclere Apex because their published size ranges clearly extend beyond 4m in both directions.

The Winchester Apex gives you the traditional appearance of an apex roof, while the Winchester Pent provides cleaner pent-roof lines. The Winchester Transverse offers another configuration, and the Highclere Apex provides another apex design to compare. Look carefully at the precise dimensions, doors, and windows, as well as the roof style, because the internal arrangement can be just as important as the external appearance.

What About the Other Summerhouses Displayed?

The other models are still worth considering if you don’t need a literal 4m x 4m footprint. The Platinum Apex Fleet, Pent Odiham, Kingclere Apex and Twyford Pent currently extend to approximately 4.8m x 3.6m, while the Hamble Corner and Bursledon Corner extend to approximately 3.0m x 3.0m.

The Diamond Bolney Georgian and Keymer Contemporary extend to approximately 3.6m x 4.8m, as do the Washington Classic and Ashington within their published ranges. The Diamond Worthing Corner extends to approximately 3.0m x 3.0m. These can still provide substantial garden rooms, but their proportions are different from a true square 4m x 4m building.

Why My Experience Matters

Customers should know who is behind the advice they are reading. I left school at 15 and started my own garden building business in 1979, trading as Marina Sheds. I was hands-on from the beginning, manufacturing and selling timber garden buildings, so I learnt about construction from working with the buildings themselves rather than simply reading specifications in a catalogue.

That practical background still influences how I look at a summerhouse today. Doors, windows and appearance naturally attract your attention first, but I also look at the timber, framing, floor, roof and glazing. Two garden buildings can look remarkably similar online and still be very different when you examine how they have actually been constructed.

I sold Marina Sheds in 1990. Unfortunately, I did not receive all the money I was due from the sale. It was a difficult business lesson, but it didn’t end my involvement with garden buildings.

In 1992 we broadened what we offered by adding summerhouses, garages, garden rooms and log cabins. We had moved well beyond sheds, so the change in direction also meant a change of name, and we became Titan Garden Buildings.

My son Craig joined me in 1992 after studying carpentry at Guildford College from 1990. His carpentry training brought additional practical woodworking and timber-construction knowledge into the business and complemented the manufacturing and retail experience I had already gained.

We sold Titan Garden Buildings in 1998 and, in 2000, Craig and I decided to take a different approach. Rather than manufacturing everything ourselves and naturally being tied to our own products, we wanted to retail carefully selected quality buildings from established manufacturers. That decision led us to form 1st Choice Leisure Buildings.

Craig now runs the day-to-day business, and I continue to support him and the team as required. I’ve been involved with garden buildings since 1979. That experience matters because I’ve seen this industry from both sides: first manufacturing and selling timber buildings ourselves and later comparing buildings from different manufacturers for our customers.

What More Than 45 Years Has Taught Me

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learnt is that dimensions and price don’t tell you everything. Two 4m x 4m summer houses can look very similar in photographs yet differ considerably in timber, framing, floor, roof, glazing, insulation, doors and windows.

The right summerhouse isn’t necessarily the cheapest or the most expensive. It’s the building whose construction and specification best suit what you genuinely want to do inside it.

Construction Matters as Much as Appearance

The current 4m x 4m category highlights quality redwood deal timber, a solid timber floor and toughened glass as standard. These are exactly the practical details I encourage customers to consider, rather than focusing solely on attractive photographs or headline prices.

Having worked with timber garden buildings since 1979, customers should understand what they are buying. Look at the timber, framing, floor, roof, glazing, doors and windows of the individual model and compare the complete specification before deciding what represents good value.

Do You Need an Insulated 4m x 4m Summer House?

Whether insulation is worthwhile depends mainly on how you intend to use your summerhouse. If it will mainly be a place to relax or enjoy the garden in pleasant weather, you may decide full insulation isn’t necessary. If you expect to work, pursue hobbies or spend longer periods inside during colder weather, insulation becomes much more relevant.

The Highclere Apex and the Winchester Apex, Winchester Pent and Winchester Transverse, whose published size ranges extend far enough to cover approximately 4m x 4m, currently offer full insulation as an option. The category also displays the fully insulated Apex Fleet and Pent Odiham, although their published maximum dimensions are approximately 4.8m x 3.6m rather than a square 4m x 4m.

My advice is to choose insulation because the way you intend to use your 4m x 4m summerhouse justifies it. Don’t pay for something you genuinely don’t need, but don’t leave insulation out if you know you’ll use the building regularly in colder weather. You can also compare our insulated summer houses.

Free Assembly and Installation

The Platinum summerhouses displayed on this page currently show free assembly. Among the Diamond models, the Bolney Georgian, Worthing Corner, Keymer Contemporary and Ashington show free installation, while the Washington Classic shows free assembly.

Having the building assembled or installed for you removes a substantial job, but suitable access and a firm, flat and level base are still essential. If your garden access is narrow, restricted, or unusual, please tell us before ordering so we can consider any potential difficulties in advance.

Get the Base Right

A 4m x 4m summer house needs proper support across its footprint. An uneven or unsuitable base can affect how the structure sits and may cause problems with doors and windows, so this is one part of the project where I would never recommend cutting corners.

If you need help preparing the site, take a look at our garden building base and additional services. Getting the base right before your summerhouse arrives is far easier than correcting an unsuitable foundation afterwards.

Bespoke Options on the Diamond Summerhouses

The Diamond Bolney Georgian, Worthing Corner, Keymer Contemporary, Washington Classic and Ashington currently show bespoke options. This can be particularly useful where changing a door or window position would help the building work better with your garden or intended furniture arrangement.

I wouldn’t customise a summerhouse simply for the sake of it. Think about what will genuinely improve the way you use the room. Sometimes a practical change to a door or window position can make a bigger difference than adding another decorative extra.

Plan the Interior Before You Buy

A square 4m x 4m summerhouse gives you considerable flexibility when positioning seating, desks, tables or hobby equipment. There is enough room to create separate areas without necessarily making the interior feel long or narrow.

I recommend marking approximately 4m x 4m on the ground before ordering and then placing chairs, boxes or other objects where your main furniture might go. It is a simple exercise, but it gives you a much clearer idea of how the finished room will feel. For final planning, always use the exact external dimensions of your chosen model.

Colour Paint Finish Options

The products currently displayed in this category show colour paint finish options. A building around 4m x 4m will be a noticeable feature in your garden, so consider how your chosen finish will work with your house, fencing, paving, and planting.

Colours displayed online can vary because of photography, lighting and different screens. If an exact shade is particularly important, check the available colour information or obtain a sample before making your final decision.

See Summerhouses Before You Buy

I have encouraged customers to see garden buildings before buying for many years. A website can show photographs, dimensions and specifications. Still, it cannot completely demonstrate how substantial a floor feels, how the doors operate or what the timber and construction are like when you inspect them close up.

You are welcome to visit our Surrey garden building display site near Guildford, Woking and Ripley. We can’t display every model in every possible size, but seeing representative buildings allows you to compare construction, finishes and features before deciding what matters most to you.

Take your time, look closely and ask questions. We don’t believe in high-pressure selling. I started selling garden buildings in 1979, and I still believe that seeing what you’re buying and understanding the specification are two of the best ways to make an informed decision.

Choosing the Right 4m x 4m Summer House

If you specifically need a building around 4m x 4m, I would begin with the Winchester Apex, Winchester Pent, Winchester Transverse and Highclere Apex because their published size ranges clearly extend beyond 4m in both dimensions. Then compare their precise sizes, roof styles, door and window arrangements and insulation options.

The other summerhouses displayed on this page are still worth considering where their different proportions suit your garden. The important thing is not to assume that every product appearing in the 4m x 4m summer house category can automatically be supplied at exactly 4.0m x 4.0m.

My Advice Before You Order

Measure your garden carefully and work from the exact dimensions of your chosen model rather than relying solely on the general 4m x 4m description. Check the route into your garden, prepare a firm, flat, level base, and think about where the doors, windows, and furniture need to be. Most importantly, decide what you genuinely want the building to do and choose the specification around that.

If you’re unsure which 4m x 4m summer house is right for you, please contact us. Tell Craig, me or one of the team what you want the building for, and we’ll help you work through the choices. After being involved with garden buildings since 1979, the best advice starts with understanding what the customer actually needs.
