Why Choose a 5m x 4m Summerhouse?

A 5m x 4m summerhouse has a nominal footprint of around twenty square metres, or approximately 215 square feet. That gives you a genuinely substantial garden room with enough space for proper sofas, tables, desks, cupboards and hobby equipment. It can work as a spacious garden retreat, entertaining room, studio, hobby room or large home office rather than simply somewhere to sit during warm weather.

I recommend marking out the approximate 5m x 4m area before ordering. Stand inside the marked footprint, think about where your furniture will go and consider which direction you want the doors and windows to face. Always use the manufacturer’s exact dimensions and the required base size for your chosen building, rather than preparing the site solely from the category description.

What Can You Use a 5m x 4m Summer House For?

A 5m x 4m summer house gives you enough space to create several distinct areas within the same room. You might have comfortable sofas and chairs at one end with a desk, hobby table, workbench or cupboards elsewhere, or use the entire building as an art studio, craft room, entertaining space or substantial garden office.

The approximately four-metre depth gives you considerable freedom with conventional furniture, while the longer dimension provides extensive usable wall space. If you already own a sofa, desk, table or specialist equipment you intend to use, measure it before choosing the final door and window positions.

Is a 4m x 5m Summer House the Same Size?

A 4m x 5m summer house will normally describe broadly the same overall footprint as a 5m x 4m summer house, with the measurements written in the opposite order. Manufacturers do not always describe frontage and depth in the same sequence, however, so always establish which dimension refers to which elevation.

Door and window positions can also make two buildings with similar overall dimensions work very differently inside, so check the individual product drawing before preparing the base or deciding where your furniture will go.

Are All the Buildings on This Page Exactly 5m x 4m?

No. This is an important point. The 5m x 4m category brings together buildings relevant to customers looking around this size, but the published dimensions differ between products. I would never prepare a foundation or place an order simply because a model appears on a 5m x 4m category page.

Some traditional British garden buildings are manufactured around nominal imperial dimensions, so a maximum size of 16ft may be approximately 4.8m rather than exactly five metres. Always work from the precise external and base dimensions of the individual summerhouse you choose.

Which Summerhouses Are the Closest Matches to 5m x 4m?

The Platinum Winchester Apex, Winchester Pent, Winchester Transverse and Highclere Apex are the strongest current matches if you genuinely need a building around 5m x 4m. The three Winchester models have published size ranges extending to approximately 8.4m x 4.8m, while the Highclere extends to approximately 4.8m x 4.2m.

I would begin by comparing those four models and then look carefully at their precise dimensions, roof styles, doors, windows, insulation and layout. They are much closer to a genuine 5m by 4m summer house than models whose maximum depth stops at approximately 3.6m.

What About the Other Summerhouses Displayed?

Kingclere Apex, Odiham Pent, Fleet Apex and Twyford Pent extend to approximately 4.8m x 3.6m. The Diamond Ashington, Bolney Georgian, Washington Classic and Keymer Contemporary also have published standard ranges that differ from a true 5m x 4m footprint.

Those buildings can still be excellent choices if their proportions suit your garden better. The important thing is not to imply that every summerhouse appearing on this page can automatically be supplied at exactly 5000mm x 4000mm.

Diamond or Platinum 5m x 4m Summerhouse?

I would normally consider Diamond when you want a quality timber summerhouse mainly for relaxation, hobbies, entertaining and conventional seasonal use. Applicable Diamond designs also offer useful bespoke options, including changes to dimensions, doors, windows, and layout.

For somebody who genuinely needs a building around 5m x 4m, Platinum is currently the stronger starting point because the Winchester and Highclere ranges extend far enough in both dimensions. Platinum also gives you useful insulation choices.

The right building is not automatically the cheapest or the most expensive. It is the one whose specification best suits how you genuinely intend to use it. You can also browse our complete summer houses range if you want to compare other sizes or styles.

Winchester or Highclere for a Larger Summerhouse?

The Winchester Apex gives you a traditional pitched-roof appearance, while the Winchester Pent provides cleaner single-slope lines. The Winchester Transverse offers another relationship between the roof ridge and frontage, and the Highclere Apex provides another substantial apex-roof option.

No one design is automatically better than another. Compare the precise dimensions, roof style, door and window arrangements and how you intend to furnish the room. A larger summerhouse needs to work well inside as well as look attractive in the garden.

Should a 5m x 4m Summerhouse Be Insulated?

Whether insulation is worthwhile depends mainly on how and when you intend to use your summerhouse. If it will mainly be a pleasant place to relax or entertain during spring and summer, you may decide full insulation isn’t necessary. If you expect to work, craft or spend several hours inside during colder periods, insulation becomes considerably more useful.

The Winchester and Highclere models currently offer full insulation as an option. Fleet Apex and Odiham Pent are supplied fully insulated, although their published maximum depths are closer to 3.6m than four metres. Insulation reduces heat transfer; it does not create heat, so heating, glazing and ventilation matter as well. You can compare our insulated summer houses for further options.

Can a 5m by 4m Summer House Be Used as a Garden Office?

Yes. A building around this size gives you generous office space and enough room for several workstations, shelving, cupboards and a separate seating or meeting area. It is considerably more flexible than a compact one-person garden office.

If you intend to work inside regularly throughout colder months, I would consider insulation, glazing, heating, ventilation, electricity, lighting and internet connectivity alongside the floor area. An occasional summer workspace and a regularly occupied home office have very different requirements.

A 5m x 4m Summerhouse for Hobbies, Crafts or a Studio

This footprint can work particularly well for hobbies because you have generous wall space for workbenches, desks, shelving and cupboards while still retaining plenty of working room. Artists may prioritise natural light, whereas crafters, model makers and collectors may value uninterrupted wall space and storage more highly.

I recommend planning the interior before finalising the glazing arrangement. More windows are not automatically better if they occupy the exact walls where you intended to put shelving, cupboards, or specialist equipment.

Can You Create Separate Areas Inside a 5m x 4m Summerhouse?

Yes. A room around twenty square metres gives you enough space to create distinct functional zones without necessarily installing permanent internal walls. You could have comfortable seating at one end, a home-working or hobby area elsewhere and useful storage while still retaining generous circulation space.

Selected bespoke buildings can also accommodate partitions, alternative door positions and different window arrangements. If you already know how you want the room divided, discuss that before ordering so the building can be planned around your intended use.

Why I Look Beyond the Photograph

After working with timber garden buildings since 1979, I know that two attractive photographs can hide considerable differences in construction. Photographs show style well, but they cannot tell you everything about timber quality, framing, floors, roofs, doors, windows, glazing or joinery.

I look at the complete structure. Good cladding needs suitable framing behind it, substantial doors depend on proper joinery, and a solid floor needs adequate support. No single headline specification should replace comparing how the complete building has actually been made.

Timber, Framing, Floors and Toughened Glass Matter

The applicable summerhouse ranges use quality timber construction, solid wooden floors and toughened glazing. These fundamental details interest me more than many decorative extras because they are parts of the building you will rely on every time you use it.

I encourage customers to inspect the details that can be difficult to appreciate online. Stand on the floor, open and close the doors, examine the window joinery and look at the framing and roof construction where possible. Those practical details often tell you considerably more about quality than attractive photography alone.

Apex, Pent or Transverse 5m x 4m Summerhouse?

An apex roof provides the familiar traditional pitched-roof appearance, while a pent roof gives you a cleaner single-slope profile. The Winchester Transverse offers another orientation that changes the relationship between the roof ridge and main frontage.

I would choose based on more than appearance. Consider surrounding fences and trees, which direction you want to face when using the room, and whether the doors and windows leave enough wall space for your furniture.

Can a 5m x 4m Summerhouse Be Made Bespoke?

Yes. Bespoke options are available on selected Diamond and Platinum designs and may include changes to dimensions, doors, windows, height, partitions and layout. This can be particularly useful if your garden requires a more precise size than one of the manufacturer’s standard models.

If you already know where your sofa, desk, workbench, table or cupboards will go, plan those positions first. We can then explain which building and available alterations are best suited to your intended use.

Can a 5m x 4m Summer House Include Storage?

A large summerhouse can lend itself particularly well to combining leisure or working space with storage. Depending on the design, one section can provide space for garden tools, bicycles, furniture, or hobby equipment, while the main room remains available for relaxation or work.

If integrated storage matters to you, compare our summer houses with shed storage. Decide how much room you genuinely require for each purpose before choosing the final footprint and layout.

A Large 5m x 4m Summerhouse Needs the Right Base

One piece of advice I have repeated throughout my working life is that every timber garden building needs a firm, flat and level foundation suitable for the exact structure being installed. A poor or uneven base can affect how the building sits and how its doors and windows operate.

Do not prepare the foundation simply by measuring five metres by four metres. First, obtain the manufacturer’s precise required base dimensions for your chosen model. A larger building needs good support across its entire footprint, so this is one part of the project where I would never recommend guessing.

Professional Fitting Included

The Platinum summerhouses currently displayed on this page include professional assembly. Applicable Diamond models also show free installation or assembly. This remains subject to the individual product, delivery area, suitable garden access and the correct prepared foundation.

If your garden has narrow passageways, steps, high walls, restricted turns or anything else which may affect delivery, please contact us before ordering so the practical details can be discussed.

See a Summerhouse Before You Buy

When I started in garden buildings in 1979, there was no internet, so customers naturally inspected buildings before buying them. Online research makes comparison much easier today, but photographs still cannot show you how substantial a floor feels, how a door operates or what a room of this size actually feels like when you stand inside it.

That is why I continue to recommend visiting our Surrey garden building display site if practical. We cannot display every model in every size, but representative buildings let you compare construction, timber, doors, glazing, and finishes before deciding.

My Garden Building Experience Goes Back to 1979

I’m Robin Antill, founder of 1st Choice Leisure Buildings. I left school at 15 and started my first garden building business in 1979, trading as Marina Sheds. I learnt the business hands-on by making and selling timber buildings, delivering them and dealing directly with customers, and that practical experience still influences how I assess garden buildings today.

I sold Marina Sheds in 1990, although unfortunately I did not receive all the money that was due to me from the sale. It was a difficult business lesson, but it did not end my involvement with the garden building industry.

From Marina Sheds to Titan Garden Buildings

By 1992 we had expanded beyond traditional sheds and added summerhouses, garages, garden rooms and log cabins. Marina Sheds no longer properly described what we were doing, so that broader direction led to the name Titan Garden Buildings.

My son Craig joined me in 1992 after studying carpentry at Guildford College from 1990. His carpentry training brought practical woodworking and timber-construction knowledge into the business alongside the experience I had already gained through manufacturing, retailing and dealing directly with customers.

Why Craig and I Formed 1st Choice Leisure Buildings

We sold Titan Garden Buildings in 1998. In 2000, Craig and I decided to take a different approach. Rather than manufacture everything ourselves and naturally be restricted to our own products, we decided to retail carefully selected quality garden buildings from established manufacturers. That decision led to the formation of 1st Choice Leisure Buildings.

I still believe that independence matters because different customers genuinely need different specifications. Somebody wanting a 5m x 4m summerhouse mainly for relaxation does not necessarily need the same building as somebody planning a regularly used insulated office or studio. Our role is to explain those differences rather than automatically sell the highest specification.

Craig now runs the day-to-day business, and I am there to support him and the team whenever required. You can read more about my background, Craig and how the business developed on our About 1st Choice Leisure Buildings page.

What More Than 45 Years Has Taught Me About Summerhouses

The first lesson is that dimensions and price do not tell you everything. Two 5m x 4m summer houses can appear very similar in photographs while differing considerably in timber, framing, floors, roofs, doors, glazing, insulation and overall construction.

The second lesson is to buy according to how you genuinely intend to use the building. There is little point in paying for features you will rarely need, but equally a conventional seasonal summerhouse should not be expected to perform exactly like a purpose-designed insulated garden room.

Frequently Asked Questions About 5m x 4m Summerhouses

How big is a 5m x 4m summerhouse?

A nominal 5m x 4m summerhouse represents around twenty square metres of footprint, equivalent to approximately 215 square feet. Many British timber buildings use nominal imperial manufacturing sizes, so always check the precise manufacturer’s dimensions rather than assuming every model measures exactly 5000mm x 4000mm.

Is a 5m x 4m summer house a good size?

For customers wanting a substantial garden room, it can be an excellent size. It gives you generous room for conventional furniture, hobbies, entertaining, a studio or a sizeable home office while still fitting into many larger domestic gardens.

Is a 4m x 5m summer house different from a 5m x 4m summerhouse?

Usually the two descriptions refer to broadly the same overall footprint with the measurements reversed. Manufacturers may describe frontage and depth differently, however, so always check the individual product plans before preparing your foundation.

Which products are the strongest matches for 5m x 4m?

The Platinum Winchester Apex, Winchester Pent, Winchester Transverse and Highclere Apex currently have the published size ranges closest to a genuine 5m x 4m requirement. You should still check their exact available dimensions before ordering.

Can I get an insulated 5m x 4m summerhouse?

Yes. The Winchester and Highclere models currently offer full insulation as an option. Other Platinum models shown also offer insulation or are supplied fully insulated, although some have shallower maximum dimensions than four metres.

Can I use a 5m x 4m summerhouse as a home office?

Yes. A building around this size provides generous office space and can accommodate several desks, shelving, cupboards and additional seating. For regular colder-weather use, also consider insulation, heating, glazing, ventilation, electricity and internet connectivity.

Can a 5m x 4m summerhouse be made bespoke?

Selected Diamond and Platinum buildings offer bespoke options which can include changes to dimensions, doors, windows, height and layout. This can be particularly useful if your garden requires a size closer to exactly five metres by four metres than a standard nominal model provides.

Can a 5m x 4m summer house include storage?

Yes. Selected designs can incorporate a separate shed or storage area. If substantial storage is important, decide how much of the overall footprint you want to devote to each purpose before choosing the final design.

Does a 5m x 4m summerhouse need a proper base?

Yes. A firm, flat, level foundation suitable for the specific building is essential. Don’t assume the required base must measure exactly five metres by four metres; confirm the manufacturer’s precise requirements before starting any foundation work.

Do I need planning permission for a 5m x 4m summerhouse?

Many domestic summerhouses can fall within permitted development rights, but this depends on factors including the property, building height, position, proximity to boundaries, overall garden coverage and intended use. The 5m x 4m footprint alone does not determine whether permission is required, so check the current requirements applying to your property if you are uncertain.

Is fitting included with these 5m x 4m summer houses?

Professional fitting or assembly is included with the applicable buildings displayed on this page, subject to the individual product, delivery area, suitable site access and the correct prepared base. My Advice Before Buying Your 5m x 4m Summerhouse

After working with timber garden buildings since 1979, my advice is straightforward: decide exactly what you want the room to do, mark the approximate 5m x 4m footprint out in your garden, measure your furniture, compare the actual construction and check the precise dimensions of the model you intend to buy. Do not assume every product returned by a size category is available at exactly five metres by four metres.

Craig, the team and I are here to explain the differences rather than automatically steer you towards the most expensive option. Tell us how you intend to use your summerhouse, and we can help you compare the Winchester, Highclere and other suitable choices, insulation, bespoke layouts, storage, bases and professional fitting.
