Diamond or Platinum: The Simple Choice
Choose Diamond if you want a quality summerhouse primarily for relaxing, entertaining or hobbies, and your priorities are value, design choice and bespoke flexibility.
Choose Platinum if you expect to use your summerhouse more regularly and value pressure-treated construction, professional insulation options, larger sizes or the potential to create a more comfortable home office, studio or hobby room.
Neither range is automatically better. The right choice depends on how often you intend to use your summerhouse and whether the additional Platinum specification will provide a genuine benefit. If your building will mainly be enjoyed on pleasant days, Diamond may provide everything you need; if it will become a regularly used garden room, Platinum is worth the additional consideration.
What Is a Tongue and Groove Summer House?
A tongue and groove summer house is a timber garden building whose wall boards are machined so that the tongue on one board fits into the groove on the next. This creates an interlocking timber surface rather than boards simply overlapping one another. You will also see this construction abbreviated to T&G, so a T&G summerhouse and a tongue and groove summerhouse normally describe the same basic cladding method.
I regard the joint as an important part of the construction, but not the whole story. After working with timber garden buildings since 1979, I would never recommend judging a summerhouse solely because the description says tongue and groove. The timber itself, framing, floor, roof, doors, glazing, treatment, installation and base all contribute to the finished building.
How Does Tongue and Groove Construction Work?
Each board has a projecting tongue machined along one edge and a corresponding groove along the other. During construction, the tongue of one board fits into the groove of the neighbouring board. This creates a close-fitting wall surface and allows adjoining boards to work together rather than behaving as individual overlapping strips of timber.
Natural timber still responds to changes in moisture and temperature. Tongue and groove joints do not stop timber moving completely, and small seasonal changes can occur. Good timber selection, machining, framing, installation, treatment and maintenance are therefore just as important as the profile of the joint itself.
Why Choose a T&G Summerhouse?
I favour tongue and groove construction for summerhouses because these are buildings intended for people to spend time inside rather than simply somewhere to keep a lawnmower. The close-fitting timber boards provide a more refined internal and external appearance than basic overlap construction and form part of a more substantial garden-building specification.
A T&G summerhouse can work as a garden retreat, reading room, hobby room, studio, occasional office or entertaining space. The correct specification depends on how often you intend to use it, at what time of year and what furniture or equipment needs to go inside.
Tongue and Groove vs Overlap Summerhouse Construction
Overlap construction normally uses boards fixed so that the edge of one board overlaps the next. It can be an economical method for straightforward storage buildings, but it does not provide the same interlocking wall construction as tongue and groove.
For a building where I expect customers to sit, work, relax or pursue hobbies, I prefer a well-made T&G structure. That does not mean every tongue-and-groove building is automatically high quality, however. A poorly framed T&G building is not made good simply by using interlocking cladding, which is why the complete specification still needs to be compared.
Tongue and Groove Is Not the Same as Pressure Treatment
Tongue and groove describes how timber boards fit together. Pressure treatment describes a preservative treatment applied to timber. They are completely different specifications, and a garden building can therefore be both tongue and groove and pressure treated.
If timber treatment is particularly important to you, compare our pressure treated summer houses. Look separately at the timber treatment, cladding profile, framing and other construction details rather than treating any one description as a complete quality standard.
Is Tongue and Groove the Same as Insulation?
No. This is one of the most important distinctions to understand. T&G describes a timber joint and cladding method; it does not tell you whether the building is insulated. A traditional tongue and groove summerhouse may have no insulation at all, while another T&G building can include insulation within its walls, roof and floor.
If regular colder-weather use matters, compare the complete thermal specification rather than relying on the cladding description. Insulation reduces heat transfer but does not itself create heat, so heating, glazing, ventilation and how you use the room also matter.
Tongue and Groove Summer House or Log Cabin?
A tongue and groove summerhouse and a log cabin can both use interlocking timber, but their wall construction is normally quite different. A T&G summerhouse is typically constructed from framed wall panels with timber cladding attached to the framework. A traditional log cabin normally uses substantially thicker interlocking wall timbers which themselves form the main wall structure.
I would therefore compare actual wall thickness, framing, floor, roof, glazing and intended use rather than choosing simply because both descriptions mention interlocking timber.
Why the Timber Species Matters
One reason I look beyond the words tongue and groove is that the same profile can be machined into different timber. Our main tongue and groove summerhouse ranges use quality redwood rather than relying simply on a generic description such as softwood or timber.
Ask what wood the building is actually made from. I would rather know the timber species, framing dimensions, floor construction and roof specification than be given a long list of marketing terms without those basic facts.
Why Framing Matters Behind T&G Cladding
The tongue and groove boards are the visible outer skin, but the framing behind them supports the wall panels. This is why comparing cladding thickness alone can be misleading. A substantial wall needs an appropriate framework as well as suitable external boards.
When I inspect a summerhouse, I look inside as well as outside. I want to see how the walls are supported, how the panels meet, how the doors and windows are framed and how the complete structure has been assembled.
Solid Wooden Floors and Roofs Matter Too
Customers understandably pay attention to the walls because tongue and groove is normally discussed as a cladding specification. Still, the floor and roof are major structural parts of a summerhouse. A quality wall does not compensate for a lightweight floor that feels unsuitable for the way you intend to use the room.

Why We Use Toughened Glass in Our Summer Houses
Glazing is particularly important in a summerhouse because doors and windows are normally much larger and more prominent than those found in a basic garden shed. Our main summerhouse ranges use toughened glass as standard.
I also recommend thinking about where the glass is positioned. Lots of windows can create a bright and attractive garden room, but every window also removes wall space that could otherwise hold a sofa, desk, cupboards or shelving. Plan the interior before assuming more glazing is always better.
Diamond, Platinum or Royal T&G Summerhouse?
Our current tongue and groove summerhouse category includes Diamond, Platinum and Royal buildings. Diamond is a sensible starting point for traditional summerhouse use where good timber construction, choice and bespoke flexibility are priorities. Platinum steps up the specification and provides pressure-treated construction and insulation choices on applicable models, while Royal is aimed at customers wanting a fully insulated premium garden room.

When I Would Choose a Diamond Summerhouse
I would consider Diamond when the main purpose is relaxing, entertaining, hobbies or enjoying the garden during the milder parts of the year. The range gives you a useful choice of traditional, contemporary, and corner designs, with extensive bespoke potential on applicable buildings.
If you do not need a heavily insulated garden-room specification, there is little point paying for features simply because they sound impressive. A well-chosen traditional summerhouse can be exactly the right building when it matches the way you actually intend to use it.
When I Would Choose a Platinum Summerhouse
Platinum becomes particularly interesting when you want a higher construction specification, pressure-treated timber, very large sizes or the flexibility to add full insulation. Selected Platinum buildings are supplied fully insulated, while others allow insulation to be specified as an option.
I would consider Platinum for more frequent use, substantial hobby rooms, occasional home working and customers who want greater specification flexibility than a conventional seasonal summerhouse.
When I Would Choose a Royal Garden Room
Royal is the premium choice within this category and is aimed at customers who already know that full insulation and a more room-like specification are priorities. These buildings are particularly relevant for regular home working, studios, hobbies and customers expecting to spend longer periods inside.
The important point is that Royal is not automatically better for everybody. Somebody wanting somewhere attractive to sit on summer afternoons may gain little benefit from paying for a specification designed for much more regular use.
Can a Tongue and Groove Summerhouse Be Used as an Office?
Yes. A T&G summerhouse can make an excellent occasional or regular workspace depending on its size and specification. For occasional spring and summer desk use, a conventional timber building may be sufficient. For regular working during colder periods, I look much more closely at insulation, glazing, heating and ventilation.
Plan desks, chairs, storage, electrical sockets and internet connectivity before finalising the building. It is much easier to select the correct windows and doors around an intended office layout than to discover afterwards that the best desk wall is almost entirely glazed.
Can a T&G Summerhouse Be Used for Hobbies or a Studio?
Yes. Tongue and groove summerhouses are particularly well suited to hobbies because they provide a proper timber room rather than simple storage space. Painting, crafts, model making, sewing, reading and other activities can all work well depending on the size and layout chosen.
Artists may want plenty of natural light, while crafters and collectors may need more wall space for shelving and cupboards. Decide what the room needs to do first and then select the glazing and layout around that requirement.
Traditional or Contemporary Tongue and Groove Summer House?
The construction method does not dictate the appearance. Tongue and groove summer houses are available in traditional apex designs, pent-roof buildings, corner layouts and contemporary styles with larger glazed areas.
I would choose partly according to appearance but also according to the position of the building, the direction you want to look while sitting inside, nearby fences and trees and the amount of uninterrupted wall space you need.
Can a Tongue and Groove Summerhouse Be Bespoke?
Yes. Bespoke options are available across selected Diamond and Platinum buildings and may include alternative dimensions, doors, windows, partitions and layouts. This can be particularly useful where a standard door position conflicts with furniture or where your garden has an awkward available space.
If you already know where your sofa, desk, workbench or cupboards will go, plan those positions first. We can then explain which models and alterations are most appropriate.
Can a T&G Summer House Include Storage?
Yes. Some summerhouse designs can combine a leisure or working room with a separate storage section. This can be useful where you want one building to provide both an attractive garden room and practical space for tools, bicycles, furniture or hobby equipment.

Tongue and Groove Summerhouses and Natural Timber Movement
Wood is a natural material and its moisture content changes with surrounding conditions. Boards can therefore expand and contract slightly through the seasons. Tongue-and-groove joints help adjoining boards work together, but they cannot and should not prevent all natural movement.
If a small seasonal joint appears, do not automatically assume that the building has failed or permanently fill it without understanding why it has occurred. Correct installation, suitable treatment, ventilation and ongoing maintenance all help natural timber perform properly.
A Good T&G Summerhouse Still Needs the Right Base
One piece of advice I have repeated throughout my working life is that even the best garden building needs a suitable foundation. The base should be firm, flat and level and should match the manufacturer’s exact requirements for the building being installed.
A poor foundation can prevent panels from sitting square and affect doors and windows. Choose your summerhouse first, then prepare the foundation to the precise required dimensions rather than guessing from the nominal building size.

When I started selling garden buildings in 1979, there was no internet, so customers naturally looked at buildings before buying them. Online photographs and specifications make research easier today, but they cannot tell you everything about how solid a floor feels, how a door operates or how the timber and framing look when you are standing beside them.

My Garden Building Experience Goes Back to 1979
I’m Robin Antill, founder of 1st Choice Leisure Buildings. I left school at 15 and started my own garden building business in 1979, trading as Marina Sheds. I learnt the trade hands-on by making and selling timber buildings, delivering them and dealing directly with customers. That practical background is why I still look beyond photographs and headline specifications when judging a summerhouse.
I sold Marina Sheds in 1990, although unfortunately I did not receive all the money that was due to me from the sale. It was a difficult business lesson, but it did not end my involvement with timber garden buildings.
From Marina Sheds to Titan Garden Buildings
By 1992 we had expanded beyond traditional sheds and added summerhouses, garages, garden rooms and log cabins. Marina Sheds no longer properly described what we were doing, so that wider direction led to the name Titan Garden Buildings.
My son Craig joined me in 1992 after studying carpentry at Guildford College from 1990. His carpentry training brought further practical woodworking and timber-construction knowledge into the business alongside the experience I had already gained through manufacturing, retailing and dealing directly with customers.
Why Craig and I Formed 1st Choice Leisure Buildings
We sold Titan Garden Buildings in 1998. In 2000, Craig and I decided on a different approach. Rather than manufacture everything ourselves and naturally be limited to our own designs, we chose to retail carefully selected quality garden buildings from established manufacturers. That decision led to the formation of 1st Choice Leisure Buildings.
I believe that independence still matters because customers need different specifications. Somebody wanting a traditional T&G summerhouse for warm-weather relaxation does not necessarily need the same building as somebody planning a fully insulated office or studio. Our role is to explain those differences rather than automatically recommend the most expensive specification.

What More Than 45 Years Has Taught Me About Timber Summerhouses
The biggest lesson is not to judge a garden building from one specification. Tongue-and-groove cladding is worthwhile, but so are the timber species, framing, floor, roof, doors, glazing, base, and installation. A good summerhouse works as a complete structure.
The second lesson is to buy according to how you will genuinely use the building. There is little point paying for insulation you will never benefit from, but equally I would not expect an ordinary seasonal T&G summerhouse to perform like a properly specified insulated garden room during winter.

My Advice Before Buying a Tongue and Groove Summer House

Check what timber is used, look at the framing, floor, roof, doors, and glazing, decide whether insulation is relevant to how you intend to use it, and make sure the base and installation arrangements are clear before ordering.
