Buying Heavy Duty Workshops and Wooden Storage Buildings

When buying a garden workshop it seems to be very straight forward to – just click on the ‘web’ find the building in the size you want and then search for the best price. ‘Piece of Cake YES? Well not really as there are so many different heavy duty workshops available from the ‘cheap and possibly nasty’ right up to ones which would feel at home in a posh country home. To ensure you make the right decision you need to do your homework to ensure you make the right choice and buy the right one for YOUR needs.

1st Choice Leisure Buildings – ONLY Offers Buildings Made to The Highest Quality

Buy With Confidence From An Established Company

By deciding to buy from an established business you will find this is the best option as you can be sure that their expertise in the garden buildings industry is key to their success. Also, normally this will only happen when they have been selling the right buildings to their customers at the right price and this normally follows after listening to them. By choosing a business with a fixed ‘brick and mortar’ address’ is always good as you can actually be sure there is somewhere to contact if you need to.

If the business is only available on the internet then how can you be sure who they are and whether they will be here today, tomorrow and in the future. Having a fixed address is always a good thing to have and is reassuring if you need to contact them in the future. Sure – emails are great but you are dependent on these being responded to, and quickly.

Can The Garden Workshop Be Installed For You?

You will find that these type of timber buildings tend to be quite large and heavy so assembling them can be challenging. This may be something you would like to do but it will always be a better option to get the experts in. This will save a lot of heavy lifting and you can be sure that the building is erected correctly. Why spend a lot of money and struggle to build it? Let someone else do it and just enjoy the finished result.

1st Choice will assemble all their wooden workshops free of charge. Don’t risk your new building just being dumped in your garden!   Read More Secrets

Should I Choose An Insulated Garden Building In The UK?

The garden building is used traditionally through the warmer months and then, maybe, used as a storage place throughout the winter. Well, how about being able to use it all year round? With a little added investment and then deciding on an insulated garden workshop, you can use this wonderful building all year round. Your children can be out from under your feet and they can use it as their own with their computer games, music or chilling with their friends. Mum or Dad could use it as a ‘man cave’ or ‘she den’ for their own hobbies or pastimes. Or an insulated garden workshop or shed could be used as a home mini-factory for your business and if so, the cost would be tax deductible which is a ‘win-win’ for you.

Can I Insulate My Outbuilding After Delivery?

It’s reasonably easy to fully insulate a garden workshop or sectional building if you have semi-reasonable DIY skills. You would need to buy fibreglass insulation, purpose made material or polystyrene and then cut this to size and fit it in between the internal framework. The fibreglass insulation will need tacking into place to stop it moving before you fix the inner skin. This can be plywood, hardboard (which you can get with an attractive veneer on it) or even T&G boarding. This is OK for the walls but the roof can be a little tricky as you have to put the insulation into place, but you have gravity working against you, making fitting the inner skin fiddly. You would, ideally, need 2 or 3 people to do the roof. After you have completed that it would also be a good idea to use cover strips over the joins to finish it off making it the ideal outdoor man cave.

What Other Options Do I Have?

On all our outbuildings, insulated workshops and sectional buildings (only timber or wooden) we are able to offer a full range of insulation options. All our Platinum and Diamond buildings can have their roof and walls lined and then insulated enabling you to benefit from all year round use. We normally use a Kingspan quality insulation which is a solid composition with foil backing. There is a range of different internal linings. Before finishing the building will have internal trims fitted ensuring a delightful finish. With a choice of internal cladding, you can choose one to suit you.

Will These Insulated Outbuildings Be Warm In The Winter?

If your wooden outbuilding is insulated either by yourself or through our service then it will be nearly as warm as inside your house. Like your house during the colder spells you will have to have some form of heating inside. Ideally, an electric radiator, but never a Calor gas heater. Besides the flammability of it – these types of heaters give off a lot of moisture and can make the building damp. Avoid at all costs!

Besides keeping your new garden house (or man cave or she room) warm in the winter it will help to keep it cooler in the summer. And this is something which not many people think about. And to be honest I never used to think about that but on our show site we had a normal uninsulated building next to an insulated one and I was checking them over. When I went from the uninsulated into the insulated one I could not believe the difference in temperature. I had to go back into the uninsulated one to check, so well worth doing.

Garden Workshops: 9 Things to Consider

You consider yourself an avid gardener, or perhaps you are still just a beginner. Either way, you are looking to buy or build a timber workshop for your gardening space and needs. You are not alone in taking gardening as a series matter. The industry has reported over $47 billion in sales within one year. Clearly, many people throughout the world consider gardening as a crucial part of a happy life at home. You might not have an expansive background in garden workshops, but that’s okay. This article is a great place for you to start.

Listed below are the top nine things you need to think about when it comes to choosing a sectional garden workshop. You deserve to have the most optimized shop for your budget, your lifestyle, and your garden.

The Purpose

Before you get started on shopping for the right workshop, you need to consider why you actually want one. In other words, what are you actually going to use this space for? Perhaps you want the shop mostly for storage. Perhaps, though, you want more of a workspace where your creativity can blossom alongside your plants. Maybe you just want a sheltered space where you can prepare the food you grow in your garden. Food gardening has become pretty popular, especially by Millennials. Over the past ten years, Millennials have more than doubled their spending on food gardening. Take the time to figure out exactly what you want your workshop to look like that would best suit you and your family.

Building Permits and Planning Consents

Of course, you need to make sure you are following all of your local regulations regarding the building of garden buildings. For the most part, there are not too many reasons you wouldn’t be able to build your workshop at all. It might merely consist of having to apply for retrospective planning pemissio0n but it is best to double check that you new outdoor man cave meets your local authority’s requirements . Either way, doing this research ahead of time will save you from headaches down the road.

Make Sure the Size of Your Workshop Fits the Space

You don’t want your new heavy duty timber workshop larger than your garden, right? That means you need to take some accurate measurements of your garden and/or available space. The good news is that there are all kinds of shapes and sizes of available garden workshops from 1st Choice. Choose the best man cave to meet your needs and requirements.. Then, think about where in relation to your garden you actually want the workshop. You don’t want it to be too far away from your actual gardening space. If there is easier access to water somewhere, though, try to prioritise that. A good rule of thumb is to not let your garden workshop exceed more than half of your garden’s total area. No matter what, don’t overdo the size of your new building. There’s no need to waste too much fertile ground merely to store some shovels.

Kid-Friendly Garden Workshops

If you have children, or even pets, actively running throughout the garden area, your new workshop might pose a threat. A lot of times, we don’t think about the sharp tools or dangerous chemicals we use when gardening. You might want to consider locking the garden when you are not around it. Not only would this prevent theft, but your children and pets won’t be able to hurt themselves by poking around.

Blending the Building in with Its Surroundings

The design of the workshop exterior is also important. For gardening spaces, it is natural to want the shop to blend in with its natural surroundings. If you get a wooden workshop, consider painting it an earthy or neutral tone. Another option would be to invest in a stone or plastic workshop, which could connect with the natural surroundings even more, but in min view a timber building is the most natural option.

Be Intentional About Filling the Interior

After you know exactly what purpose your workshop is going to serve, it is time to map out the interior. Think about the main areas of the space, and organize them to be sensible about accessibility and space. For example, you don’t want all of your most used tools in the very back of your cave. Be intentional about putting the most commonly used item toward the doors. Also, do your best to keep the centre of the shop free of furniture. That way, everything surrounding the interior will be easily accessible. You should also do your best to keep the interior neat and tidy so that you always know where everything is. This is often harder than it seems as time goes on.

Consider Features of Doors and Windows

As mentioned above, it can be a great investment to take the exterior design of your garden workshop seriously. You might as well make the most out of this home improvement project. There are all kinds of door and window features that can optimise your specific usage your new sectional building. For example, consider widely opening double barn size doors if you think you will be moving large equipment like mowers in and out of it. To keep out children or pets while working in the building, you could even buy a stable door that closes only the bottom half. By allowing the top half to remain open, you can still keep an eye on the outside and allow the airflow to continue. For your windows, you might want to consider storm shutters depending on certain area weather patterns.

Think About the Weather in the Area

Speaking of weather patterns, you should be sensible about what it would take to keep your workshop sturdy in your region. If you are in an area with a lot of storms, make sure you install a protective roof. Ensure you choose a premium timber workshop as these would normally stand up to the worse weather which can be thrown at it. Can you say the same about the cheap and cheerful one you bought at your local super store? For places where the summers get really toasty, you should definitely think about having a lot of opening windows in it. This will really help keep the place cool throughout the year. Or consider having an insulated garden building for the best all year round use.

Professional Installation

No matter what, there is a lot of detail that goes into the installation of garden workshops. If you are not prepared to tackle this project alone, consider talking to professionals. Why risk building your new timber workshop your self and risk having a problem when 1st Choice will assemble all their Platinum and Diamond buildings free of charge. That’s got to make sense – surely? We are here to make sure you find and install the best workshop to fit your lifestyle and gardening needs. How Qualified Are We To Offer Advice?

We, being a family business, have been involved in the manufacture of quality garden workshops for sale since 1979 when Robin started his first production unit. Craig, Robin’s son, joined in 1990 and trained at Guildford College in joinery. And for over 20 years we ran one of the largest UK garden building companies in the south of England, and make very strong timber workshops, and made the conscious decision to only deal with quality materials which we knew would last the test of time. This ethos probably comes from our upbringing. Robin’s father and grandfather were Master Butchers in Cleethorpes, Lincolnshire and Quality and Customer Service was always the keyword behind their businesses.

Craig is a key member of the business and is helping 1st Choice to embrace the challenges of the 21st century. And with his two children, Daniel and Rebecca, the future looks very promising. So as you can see we are not just salespeople selling a range of products who know nothing of little about the products but have the history behind us to ensure that when you choose ‘1st Choice’ then you know that your wooden workshop, man cave, or sectional building will actually be ‘1st Choice.

Before Buying Always View Wooden Garden Buildings Beforehand

The ‘internet’ is an amazing thing (thanks to Sir Tim Berners-Lee) but the flashiest of web pages and glossy brochure can never show a REAL feel for what you are buying. This is not a problem with many standard items but when selecting YOUR new ‘man cave’ or large shed it’s important to know that your expectations will be met with the same as what you ordered. By being able to view your proposed building you can be reassured of the quality and see how well constructed it is, you can check the height to ensure you won’t bang your head and can see if the doors and windows are made from stern stuff.

This will help you to distinguish the ‘wheat from the chaff’ – i.e. the made down to a price cheap and nasty workshops, which are readily available on the internet, and the well constructed, properly made buildings which are designed to last a long time. The claims by the retailers, who only sell online, that it’s good to buy online and that you can save money may be true to a certain degree BUT there is only one way to be sure you won’t end up with that ‘cheap and nasty’ building in your garden. By viewing beforehand you can save yourself from the stress and potential heartache. And it VITAL to remember that the cheapest price is not always the best value.

Happy To Settle for What’s Available? or Are You Special?

Standard sizes and designs have certain advantages as these can help keep the costs down a little however why not consider a building to suit YOU and YOUR garden. This will enable you to utilise your new sectional building and allow it to have the best use and to fit in the space that you have available. By deciding on a company which can make a garden building in the size and design for you then this is what can happen. This might be a little more expensive but this small extra cost can be the difference between being 100% satisfied or ‘making do’. Well worth considering surely?

Bespoke 1st Choice Garden Workshops – have always offered their garden buildings in ‘more or less’ any design or size to suit you – it’s in their DNA.

The Best Timber Is Always the Right Option For You

It can be cheaper to use inferior grades of wood or whitewood and can be OK, to a certain degree, if you only want a shed to last a year or two. But by insisting on the better redwood timber you can ensure a long life for your new ‘pride and joy’ for your home. Redwood by its very nature grows slower than white wood so the grain is more tightly compacted and will last longer. It also tends to retain more of the resin within the wood which gives it a waxy feeling which further enhances the virtues. Whitewood because it grows so quickly is prone to having little knots dropping out. So redwood, even though it can be a little more expensive, is the best option for a long term building.

1st Choice Garden Buildings – Select redwood deal timber on the majority of their buildings for longer life.

Beware of OSB, Chipboard or Sterling Board Boards

You will find that most of the ‘cheap’ sheds will use Sterling board, chipboard or OSB board or Sterling board on the roofs and floors to save money. This would be fine in an ideal scenario but as soon as any damp gets into these boards (and being outside is nearly unavoidable) they will start to swell and then disintegrate. This will be the end of your shiny new man cave without any expensive repairs. These sectional workshop companies know this so by saying their floors and roofs are made from ‘Sheet Materials’ they hope to hide the fact from you. They avoid using the words ‘sterling board, chipboard, OSB board, etc’ as they know it’s quite possible that there will be problems in the near future. Be VERY cautious if any OSB board etc is used on a roof as this will fail as soon as it gets wet.

1st Choice Sectional Buildings – are free of chipboard, OSB board, Sterling board and are not used on any of their workshops.

Are All Wooden Building Panels Fully Pre Made?

It amazes me that many of the cheap workshops, besides being made of chipboard, etc and other nasty materials, are delivered in pieces which you have to build some of the panels yourself. Absolutely Bonkers! If you are buying a cheap building always double check what you are getting.

Where Can I find More Information?

Mr G of Romford Essex. Platinum 14×8 Heavy Duty Garden Workshop – ????? Star Review

Feedback: – Very impressed with company – delivered on time and all as per quote. No issues. Very good building, well designed and fit for purpose. Only minor grumble is that some of the finishing was poor. eg beading around the window was loose (too few pins). There were a couple of splits where screws had been positioned too close to the ends of timber pieces. But overall very good indeed.

Response: Thanks for your note. It’s good that you are happy overall with your new garden workshop. It’s not so good that our very high standards slipped a little and let you down. Sorry about that but thanks for letting me know so I can let the factory know. Regards, Robin

Mr C of Horsham West Sussex. Platinum 10×12 Wooden Workshop – ????? Star Review

Feedback: – easy to order, friendly and helpful staff. Although I was aware delivery would take up to 8 weeks I did’nt actually think it would end up being 8 weeks, it did seem abit long considering the shed is basically in sectional stock pieces, Not exactly a custom one off, reasonably well designed constructed For the money paid, delivery was good and on arranged time, erection was OK although typically rushed, so some carelessness did irritate, the main issue was the concrete base had sunk slightly in one corner so instead of informing me, they decided a small stone to prop up a very heavy 10×12 shed would suffice?, otherwise on the whole would recommend, good quality shed.

Response: Thanks for your constructive feedback. We always try to quote the correct lead times rather than saying it will be 5 days and turn out to be 6 weeks. Guaranteed to cause friction with the customer. The installers are very good and surprisingly quick (in most customer’s eyes) but they do rely on having a good base. To put a stone underneath seems a little under what was required and they should have talked to you to see what you would like to do. However, I’m pleased you are happy with your new garden workshop and I hope you have many years of enjoyment out of using it. Thanks for letting us know. Regards, Robin

Feedback: They kept in touch well to make sure they understood my order correctly, I got the shed I wanted with no problems. It’s very good (although at that price it should be). Had to take one of the doors off after a week and plane about 2mm off it as they’d jammed. otherwise, I am happy with the purchase.

Response: Thanks for your feedback on your new timber workshop. I’m sorry you had a problem with the doors which is quite unusual. We would always be happy to come back on any snagging issues. Thank you for letting me know. Regards, Robin
