Choosing and Comparing Summer Houses
Choosing the Right Summer House for Your Garden
Choosing a summer house starts with three questions: how you’ll use it, what needs to fit inside, and where it will stand. Decide these first, then compare the designs and specifications that suit your garden and budget.
Our summerhouse buying guide explains the main points to consider.
What Will You Use Your Summer House For?
For reading, relaxing or entertaining during warmer months, a traditional summer house may provide everything you need.
For a home office, studio or hobby room, also consider natural light, ventilation, power and heating. For regular winter use, explore our insulated summer houses and check the complete specification.
What Size Summer House Do You Need?
Measure your furniture and allow room to move around it and open the doors. Check usable internal dimensions as well as the building’s external footprint.
Mark out the proposed footprint in your garden before ordering. Leave suitable access for installation and space for future maintenance.
What Should You Look for When Buying a Summer House?
Compare the specifications as carefully as the photographs. Cladding, framing, floors, roof coverings, glazing and treatment all affect what you receive for your money.
Use the range comparison on this page to shortlist suitable buildings, then check each product’s details and optional upgrades.
Check the Timber and Framing
Check the cladding’s finished thickness and the framing dimensions. These measurements give you a clearer basis for comparison than descriptions such as “heavy duty”.
Don’t Overlook the Floor and Roof
Check the floor and roof materials, together with the roof covering supplied. Consider how you’ll use the floor and whether the quote includes any roof upgrades.
Doors, Windows and Glazing
Choose door and window positions to suit your view, access and furniture layout. Plenty of glass brings in light, but you may also need wall space for a desk or sofa.
Check whether glazing is single or double, whether windows open, and which upgrades cost extra. For winter use, consider glazing alongside the building’s insulation.
Don’t Choose a Summer House on Price Alone
Compare the total cost of your chosen size and specification. Confirm delivery, installation, treatment or paint, and any upgrades. Allow separately for base preparation and other services unless your quotation includes them.
Our guide to summer house costs in the UK explains what can affect the final price.
Insulated Summer Houses and Available Styles
Do You Need an Insulated Summer House?
For regular use in colder months, insulation is worth considering. For a garden retreat used mainly in warmer weather, a conventional timber summer house may be sufficient.
Check exactly which areas are insulated: walls, roof and floor. Packages vary, so don’t assume every insulated model includes all three. Glazing, ventilation and suitable heating also matter; insulation reduces heat loss but does not produce heat.
Read our guide to insulating a summerhouse for more detail.
Summer House or Summer House With a Shed?
Our summer houses with a shed combine a leisure area and separate storage in one building.
Decide how much room you need for each use before choosing the layout. Our summerhouse shed buyer’s guide explains the options.
Painted or Natural Timber Summer House?
Choose a finish that suits your garden and the maintenance you are happy to undertake. Check whether your chosen price includes treatment or painting, and follow the care instructions for that finish.
Explore our painted summer houses and summer house colour ideas for inspiration.
Summer House or Garden Room – What’s the Difference?
The terms overlap, so compare construction and intended use rather than relying on the name. A traditional summer house often suits seasonal relaxation; an insulated garden room may suit more frequent use.
For a regular workspace, check insulation, glazing and practical requirements such as power, heating and ventilation.
Summer House Delivery, Installation and Positioning
Summer Houses Delivered and Installed
Professional installation is included with our principal summer house ranges, subject to the model, delivery area, suitable access and a prepared base.
Check our delivery areas, or send us your postcode and preferred model. We can confirm coverage, installation requirements and any additional charges before you order.
What Access Is Needed for Installation?
You’ll need to carry building sections from the delivery vehicle to your base. Narrow gateways, steps, tight corners or access through a house can affect installation.
Send photographs and measurements of restricted access before ordering so we can check what is possible.
A Good Summer House Needs a Good Base
Your summer house needs a firm, flat and level base suitable for the chosen building. Confirm the exact base dimensions and manufacturer’s requirements before starting work; nominal product sizes may not be the required base dimensions.
Our summer house base guide explains the options. If you need base preparation or an old building removed, ask about our additional services, available according to location and project.
Where Should You Position a Summer House?
Consider sunlight, shade, privacy and the view from inside. Allow access for installation and maintenance, and check boundaries, drainage and any planning requirements before settling on a position.
For an awkward space, explore our corner summer houses and guide to using garden corners.
