5m x 4m Sheds – Large Storage and Workshop Space

A 5m x 4m shed gives you a substantial amount of usable space for garden machinery, bicycles, tools, shelving and larger equipment. A building around this footprint can also accommodate a sizeable workbench and still leave useful room to move around, making it well suited to customers who want to combine storage with DIY or hobby use.

This page forms part of our wider garden sheds range but concentrates specifically on buildings grouped around this larger metric footprint. The actual products currently shown are from our Diamond and Platinum ranges, with apex, pent, reverse-apex and transverse layouts available.

Is a 5m x 4m Shed Exactly Five Metres by Four Metres?

Not necessarily. Many British timber sheds are manufactured in nominal imperial sizes, so products grouped in a 5m x 4m shed category may be slightly shorter, longer, narrower or wider than exactly 5000mm x 4000mm.

I always recommend checking the exact measurements on the individual product page before preparing a base or positioning the building close to a fence, wall or boundary. The precise footprint and any roof overhang matter more than the rounded metric category name.

Which 5m x 4m Shed Should I Choose?

If flexibility over doors, windows and layout is important, the Diamond Chichester Apex, Diamond Chichester Pent and Woodgate Reverse Apex are all actual products shown on this page. Their published range extends to 24×12, and they offer free fitting, colour-finish choices and bespoke options.

The Platinum Fareham Apex, Fareham Pent and Fareham Reverse Apex are also genuine options around this footprint. They are available up to 20×16 and offer free assembly, colour finishes and full-insulation options.

The Southampton Apex, Pent and Transverse models are also shown on this page and cover sizes up to 20×16. At the same time, the Portsmouth Apex provides another pressure-treated option with colour and insulation choices.

The Winchester Apex, Pent and Transverse buildings extend even further, up to 28×16, so they are particularly worth comparing if you want a substantial building with plenty of flexibility over layout and future use.

Apex, Pent, Reverse Apex or Transverse?

There is no single layout which is best for everybody. An apex roof has the familiar central ridge, a pent roof slopes in one direction, while reverse-apex and transverse designs change the orientation of the main elevation and entrance.

With a 4m x 5m shed, entrance position can make a considerable difference to how you use the space. I would decide where the building will stand and how you naturally approach it before choosing the layout, particularly if you intend to add shelving, machinery or a workbench.

What Is a 5m x 4m Shed Best Used For?

A shed around this size works well for substantial garden storage, bicycles, lawnmowers, furniture, tools and larger equipment. It can also provide a practical DIY or hobby area, with enough floor space for a good-sized workbench while still retaining useful storage and access.

I recommend planning the interior before ordering. Measure your largest equipment, decide where shelves and benches will go and make sure bulky items can pass comfortably through the chosen doors. Good planning will usually make more difference than simply choosing the largest building available.

Can a 5m x 4m Shed Be Used as a Workshop?

For many home DIY and hobby uses, yes. A 5.0m x 4.0m shed provides enough space for a substantial workbench, tools and organised storage while retaining clear working room.

If you expect to spend regular periods inside, compare the Fareham, Portsmouth, Southampton and Winchester buildings and the insulation options available on the relevant models. If the building will mainly be used for storage, door access, floor area and practical layout may matter more than insulation.

Can You Get an Insulated 5m x 4m Shed?

Yes. Full-insulation options are available on selected Platinum products shown on this page, including Fareham, Portsmouth, Southampton and Winchester models. This can make sense if you intend to spend longer periods inside for DIY or hobbies.

I would not automatically choose insulation simply because it is available. A shed used mainly for bicycles, lawnmowers and garden machinery has different requirements from one where somebody expects to work for several hours at a time. Choose the specification around how you genuinely intend to use it.

Are These 5m x 4m Sheds Fitted for You?

Professional fitting or assembly is included with the relevant Diamond and Platinum timber buildings displayed on this page, subject to the manufacturer’s delivery area, suitable access and having a correctly prepared level base ready before installation.

You will still need to provide the right foundation. Because these buildings come in different nominal sizes, always prepare the base using the exact measurements of your chosen model rather than assuming every 5m x 4m shed requires a 5000mm x 4000mm base.

What Should You Check Before Buying?

After many years in this business, I would never recommend choosing a large shed simply from its photograph and headline price. Look at the timber, framing, floor, roof, doors, glazing and available options, and think carefully about which features genuinely matter to you.

Two buildings grouped around the same 4m x 5m shed footprint can have very different specifications. The Diamond buildings offer one kind of flexibility, while the Platinum Fareham, Portsmouth, Southampton and Winchester models offer different pressure-treated and insulation options. Compare what you are actually buying rather than relying only on the category size.

My Experience With Garden Buildings Goes Back to 1979

I’m Robin Antill, founder of 1st Choice Leisure Buildings. I left school at 15 and started my own business in 1979 trading as Marina Sheds. I learnt the business hands-on by making and selling sheds, delivering buildings, and dealing directly with customers, which taught me where timber quality, framing, floors, roofs, and doors really matter once a building is used year after year.

I sold Marina Sheds in 1990, although unfortunately I did not receive all the money which was due from the sale. It was a difficult business lesson, but I remained in the garden-building industry.

In 1992 we expanded beyond sheds to include summerhouses, garages, garden rooms and log cabins. As the business had moved well beyond Marina Sheds, that wider direction led to the name Titan Garden Buildings. My son Craig joined me in 1992 after studying carpentry at Guildford College from 1990, bringing his own practical woodworking knowledge into the business.

We sold Titan Garden Buildings in 1998 and in 2000 made another important decision. Rather than being tied to products from one manufacturer, we formed 1st Choice Leisure Buildings so we could compare quality products from different manufacturers and offer customers a genuine choice.

Craig now runs the day-to-day business, and I remain involved to support him and the team whenever required. You can read more about our history on the About 1st Choice Leisure Buildings page.

Why Does My Experience Matter When Choosing a Shed?

Having worked with sheds and garden buildings since 1979, I have learnt that the most expensive building is not automatically the right choice, and neither is the cheapest. What matters is whether the construction, dimensions, doors, windows and available options match what you genuinely need the building to do.

If flexibility and bespoke options are important, compare the Chichester and Woodgate buildings. If pressure-treated construction, opening windows and insulation options matter because you expect to spend more time inside, compare the Fareham, Portsmouth, Southampton and Winchester models. My role is to explain those differences rather than tell everybody that one particular range is best.

How Do I Choose the Best 5m x 4m Shed?

Start by measuring the available space and deciding exactly what needs to go inside. Consider your largest equipment, where the main entrance should be, whether you need windows, and how much uninterrupted wall space you want for shelving or tools.

Then compare the precise measurements of the products displayed here rather than assuming every building is exactly 5.0m x 4.0m. If another footprint might suit your garden better, compare alternatives in our garden sheds by size section.

If you are unsure which 5m x 4m shed is right for you, please ask us. Between Craig, myself and the team, there is a great deal of practical garden-building experience here, and I would much rather help you choose the right dimensions and specification before you order than see you discover afterwards that another building would have worked better.

Can I See a 5m x 4m Shed Before Buying?

Whenever practical, I recommend seeing garden buildings before buying.

We cannot display every model in every possible size. Still, you can visit our Surrey garden building display site near Guildford, Woking and Ripley to inspect representative buildings and compare construction, floors, doors, windows and finishes for yourself.

Photographs are useful, but they cannot fully show you how substantial a floor feels underfoot or how a door operates.

I started selling sheds in 1979 and still believe that seeing the product and understanding its specifications are two of the best ways to make a good buying decision.
