Unlike mass-produced workshops available at the local large DIY retailer, we use properly graded softwood (usually Scandinavian redwood or quality spruce). We believe that density is important for strength and long life. Every piece gets pressure treatment or dip-treated before assembly, protecting your timber workshop from the inside out.
- Shiplap: Interlocking boards create weather tight walls while maintaining a classic workshop look. Water runs off without finding gaps.
- Tongue & Groove: This material has stronger interlocking than shiplap, and thicker boards feel more substantial. The smooth internal face makes lining easier if insulation is added later.
- Loglap: Gives a chunky, cabin-style appearance that some prefer. Still interlocks properly for weather protection.
The frame carries everything, including the roof load, wall cladding, and your tools. So, we use hefty 2×2-inch or 3×1½-inch framing (nominal) at proper centres, and suitable bracing to prevent racking.
- Floor: Heavy-duty tongue-and-groove or solid caber board flooring handles workshop traffic. It is thicker than standard shed floors because dropped tools demand it. Pressure-treated bearers underneath prevent ground moisture rot.
- Roof: Apex roofs give maximum headroom, which is perfect for tall projects. Pent roofs work against boundaries where planning rules apply. Either way, both use proper roofing felt with optional EPDM rubber upgrades or Onduline on Platinum workshops.
- Wide Double Doors: Standard from 8ft width upwards for proper material access. Heavy-duty hinges won’t sag.
- Security: Multi-point locking keeps tools safe. Reinforced frames resist forcing. Optional window bars for high-value contents.
- Windows: Fixed or opened, positioned where needed. Toughened glass comes standard (safer when moving timber around).
Workshops need airflow for paint fumes, sawdust, and general moisture. Our Platinum workshop designs include positioned vents that create a through-flow without workspace draughts.
Here’s a quick pro tip for you: start with your current needs, then add 25%. In our experience, every workshop owner wishes they’d gone bigger!
That aside, an 8×6 suits basic DIY, but you can step up to 10×8 to include a proper workbench plus plenty of storage. The popular 12×10 gives room for furniture-sized projects. Also, consider access. Double doors from 8ft widths make life so much easier.
Getting the base level is really important. Concrete is ideal, although paving slabs can work, and timber frame bases are usually fine. Either way, the base must match the timber workshop footprint.
