More people work at home from their converted garden shed

Garden sheds are increasingly becoming the new base for working Britain, it has been reported.

More than 3.5 million people work at home for some or all of the week according to the Trades Union Congress, reports thisismoney.co.uk.

The trend is believed to have been triggered by the recession and the fact that many people were made redundant, prompting them to start their own business.

Yet research from Direct Line reveals that almost a third of people running a home-based business had no specialist insurance, the website reports.

The "growing army" of eBay traders are also unlikely to be covered by conventional property insurance, it states.

Graeme Trudgill of the British Insurance Brokers' Association told the news provider: "If you have customers visiting you at home regularly, or if you pay someone else to work with you, get in touch with an insurance broker and discuss a business policy."

An entrepreneur in Dorset has applied for planning permission to convert his garden shed into a microbrewery, the Bridport News reports.

Mark Jenkin told the news provider that his aim was to turn a passion for making homebrew beer and wine into a business.
