Choosing a garden building is an investment, so it's important to buy from a company you can rely on. At 1st Choice Leisure Buildings, we've been helping customers find the right garden sheds, summerhouses, log cabins, garden offices and workshops since 1979 when Robin Antill opened the doors. As a family-run business, we believe in offering honest advice rather than a hard sell. We take the time to understand what you need and help you choose a building that suits your garden, your budget and the way you plan to use it.

Our approach is reflected in our 4.9 Trustpilot rating, where customers regularly mention our friendly, helpful service. We only work with manufacturers we trust, selecting buildings that offer good quality, durability and value for money. Most are made from FSC®-certified timber and built to cope with the British weather. If you'd rather see a building before you buy, you're welcome to visit one of the UK's largest garden building display sites.

Being able to compare different models and talk things through with our experienced team helps many customers make the right decision. Since 1979, we've supplied over 50,000 buildings across the UK, building our reputation on quality products, straightforward advice and customer service you can depend on. We are always available to meet your needs or requirements so contact us NOW if you would like help or advice.

We live quite far away; is it really worth visiting our show rooms? Absolutely!

We strongly urge anyone looking for a new building – whether it's a new garden shed, summerhouse, workshop, garage, or a full garden room – to visit and inspect the quality in person before committing to any purchase.

Seeing the craftsmanship, materials and finishes for yourself is the best way to make a confident and informed decision.

Whilst we cannot display everything we offer, we have carefully selected around 80 different buildings that allow us to demonstrate almost every feature, design option, and construction detail in one form or another.

This allows you to compare styles, sizes and specifications, ask any questions you may have, and find the building that best suits your needs.

So, yes, it is absolutely worth visiting. Click here to see what buildings on display.

Which Prefab Shed Range Should I Choose?

Our Diamond, Sapphire, Southampton & Fareham and Platinum prefab sheds cover everything from everyday garden storage to large, higher-specification buildings suitable for hobbies, workshops and more regular use. The best choice depends on the size you need, your budget, how much time you expect to spend inside the building and whether features such as pressure-treated construction or insulation are important.

Specifications, sizes and available options vary between individual models. Always check the specifications of the particular prefab shed before ordering.

Reasons to Choose a Diamond Prefab Shed

Diamond is a strong starting point if you want a well-built prefab timber shed with excellent value and plenty of choice. Selected Diamond models cover an exceptionally wide range of sizes, with bespoke options available where a standard building does not quite suit your garden.

Why Might Diamond Be Right for You?

  • You mainly need practical garden storage.
  • You want good quality without paying for specifications you may not need.
  • You need an unusual or larger shed size.
  • You want flexibility over doors, windows or layout.
  • You need space for tools, bikes, garden machinery or DIY equipment.
  • Insulation is not one of your main priorities.

Choose Diamond if: value, size choice and flexibility matter more to you than having a fully insulated specification.

Reasons to Choose a Sapphire Prefab Shed

Sapphire provides a useful step up when you still want a relatively compact garden shed but expect more from the building than straightforward storage. Current Sapphire prefab models include full-insulation and colour-finish options, making them particularly interesting for customers who may also use the building for hobbies or occasional projects.

Why Might Sapphire Be Right for You?

  • You need a small to medium-sized prefab shed.
  • You want a higher specification than a straightforward storage building.
  • You may spend time inside the shed on hobbies or projects.
  • You want the option of full insulation.
  • You want a professionally fitted timber building.
  • You do not need the much larger sizes available in the Southampton, Fareham or Platinum ranges.

Choose Sapphire if: you want a more highly specified compact shed with insulation potential without moving into a much larger workshop-style building.

Reasons to Choose Southampton & Fareham Prefab Sheds

Southampton and Fareham are worth considering together when you need a more substantial prefab building. Current models extend up to approximately 20×16 ft and include professional assembly, colour-finish options, and full insulation.

The additional size and specification make these ranges particularly useful when your shed needs to provide genuine working space as well as storage.

Why Might Southampton or Fareham Be Right for You?

  • You need considerably more usable floor space.
  • You want storage combined with a hobby or working area.
  • You expect to spend more time inside the building.
  • You want the option of full insulation.
  • You need room for benches, shelving, machinery or larger equipment.
  • You want a higher-specification prefab building without necessarily requiring the maximum dimensions of the Platinum Winchester range.

Choose Southampton or Fareham if: your prefab shed needs to function as a substantial storage and working building rather than simply somewhere to keep garden equipment.

Reasons to Choose a Platinum Prefab Shed

Platinum is the range to investigate when space, specification and multi-purpose use are more important than achieving the lowest initial price. Selected Platinum Winchester prefab buildings extend up to approximately 28×16 ft and are available with full insulation and colour-finish options.

Why Might Platinum Be Right for You?

  • You need a particularly large prefab timber building.
  • You want substantial storage and working space in one building.
  • You intend to use the building for hobbies, projects or workshop-style activities.
  • You want a full-insulation option.
  • You need considerably more space than a conventional garden shed provides.
  • You are prepared to invest more for greater size and specification.

Choose Platinum if: you want a large, highly specified prefab building that can provide much more than everyday garden storage.

Diamond, Sapphire, Southampton & Fareham or Platinum: The Simple Answer

Choose Diamond when you want excellent value, plenty of sizes and maximum flexibility for everyday storage, DIY or general garden use.

Choose Sapphire when you want a compact or medium-sized shed with a higher specification and the option of full insulation.

Choose Southampton or Fareham when you need a larger, more substantial building that can combine storage with hobbies, DIY or workshop-style use.

Choose Platinum when maximum space, specification and multi-purpose potential are your priorities, and you are prepared to invest more to achieve them.

There is no single best prefab shed for every customer. The best value comes from choosing the specification you will actually use rather than automatically buying either the cheapest or most expensive range.

Browse our prefab sheds to compare the available sizes, styles and options.

Prefab Sheds: A Practical Guide to Choosing the Right Building

A prefab shed is a garden building manufactured in sections before it arrives at your home, rather than being constructed entirely from individual pieces of timber in your garden. The wall panels, doors, windows and roof sections are prepared in advance, which makes installation quicker and helps ensure consistent construction quality.

From our experience supplying garden buildings, the biggest advantage of a good prefabricated shed is convenience without having to compromise on choice. You can select the size, roof style, door position, windows, finish and optional extras you need while most of the building work has already been completed before delivery.

Our timber prefab buildings use quality redwood deal rather than cheaper whitewood, with substantial framing designed to produce a strong and dependable structure. Depending on the range, options can include toughened glass, painted finishes, double doors, insulation and bespoke layouts. Many of our wooden buildings also include professional assembly subject to the applicable delivery and access conditions.

What Is a Prefabricated Shed?

A prefabricated shed, often shortened to prefab shed, is supplied as pre-manufactured sections that are assembled on a prepared base at your property. It is different from a building made completely from loose materials on site and can also be very different from a lightweight flat-pack shed bought purely for DIY assembly.

The important point is that the word prefab describes the method of manufacture rather than one particular style or quality level. A prefabricated building can be a compact storage shed, a substantial workshop-style building or a customised timber structure designed around a particular garden.

If you’re not quite sure what type of shed you need yet, have a look through our garden building shed collection. It’s a good place to compare the different sizes, styles and options available.

Why Choose a Prefab Shed?

Prefab sheds are popular for a fairly simple reason: most of the hard work has already been done before the building arrives at your home. The main sections are made in the workshop, so once everything is delivered, there’s considerably less work to do in the garden.

You also get a properly made building without having to go down the route of having something constructed from scratch on site. There’s plenty of choice too, from small sheds for the mower and garden tools through to larger buildings for bikes, machinery, hobbies or general storage.

  • Quicker to put up, as the main sections of the shed arrive already manufactured.
  • Panels are made in workshop conditions, which helps keep the construction consistent.
  • Plenty of sizes and layouts to choose from, including larger buildings where you need more usable space.
  • Depending on the range, you can choose different doors, windows, roof styles, colours and other extras.
  • Professional installation is available with many of our timber sheds, depending on your location and access to the garden.
  • A practical choice for everyday garden storage, bikes, tools, hobbies and larger equipment.

For most people, the best prefab shed is therefore not simply the cheapest building of the correct dimensions. Construction, timber quality, framing, floor specification, roof construction, access and installation all matter just as much as the headline size.

Prefab Shed Comparison: What Should You Look For?

When comparing prefabricated sheds, look beyond the photograph and headline price. Two buildings described as the same nominal size can have very different specifications, usable internal space and long-term durability.

Feature What to check Why it matters
Timber Species and grade of timber rather than simply the word ‘wood’ Better-quality timber generally provides better appearance, strength and long-term performance.
Framing Actual dimensions and spacing of the structural framework The frame supports the wall panels, roof and overall building structure.
Cladding Board type, profile and thickness Cladding affects strength, weather resistance and the appearance of the finished shed.
Floor Whether a proper floor is included and how it is supported A strong floor is especially important for machinery, mowers and heavy stored items.
Roof Timber construction, covering, pitch and drainage The roof is one of the most important parts of keeping a shed dry.
Windows Glass type and position Glazing affects safety, natural light, security and how you can arrange the interior.
Doors Width, height, position and single or double configuration A generous doorway makes moving bulky equipment considerably easier.
Installation Whether erection is included or charged separately A low advertised shed price can become less attractive after delivery and fitting costs are added.
Base requirements What foundation is required before delivery A firm, flat and level base is fundamental to the long-term performance of the building.
Customisation Which dimensions, doors, windows and finishes can be altered Small design changes can make a major difference to how useful the finished building is.

Timber Prefab Sheds or Metal Storage Buildings?

Timber and metal buildings can both be prefabricated, but they suit different priorities. Timber provides a traditional garden appearance and is particularly adaptable when you want windows, different door positions, shelving, paint finishes or a more individual layout. You can explore our dedicated timber shed selection if wood is your preferred material.

Metal buildings can be a good choice where low maintenance and security are particularly important. Some customers use them primarily for cycles, machinery or equipment rather than as a building they expect to spend time inside. Our separate steel and metal storage range explains the available options in more detail.

There is no universally best material. The correct choice depends on what you will store, how prominent the building is in the garden, the level of maintenance you are comfortable with and whether you intend to adapt the interior later.

Choose the Shed Around What You Will Put Inside It

One of the most useful lessons we can give any shed buyer is to decide what needs to go inside before choosing the building. Draw up a list of the largest items and think about how you will physically move them through the doorway.

A mower, wheelbarrow, barbecue and garden furniture require much more usable floor area than a few hand tools. Bicycles need suitable door access and room to manoeuvre, while a workbench needs both wall space and comfortable standing room in front of it.

If cycle storage is the main requirement, see the dedicated cycle storage buildings. For motorcycles and heavier machines, the purpose-designed motorcycle storage range is generally a more useful comparison than a conventional small storage building.

Think About the Base Before Ordering

A high-quality prefab shed still needs a suitable foundation. An uneven or unstable base can cause panels to move, doors to become difficult to close, and the building to sit incorrectly. It can also make installation considerably more difficult.

The base should be firm, level and suitable for the particular building being installed. Do not assume an existing area of paving is automatically suitable simply because it looks approximately level.

If you do not already have an appropriate foundation, information about our base building and garden building services is available before you order.

Allow Enough Space for Delivery and Installation

Customers understandably spend a great deal of time measuring the space where the finished shed will stand, but sometimes forget to measure the route used to get there. Side gates, passages, walls, garages, trees, steps and changes in ground level can all affect delivery.

Prefabricated panels can be large. Check the complete route from the delivery point to the base and tell us about restricted access before ordering. It is much easier to solve an access problem while choosing the building than on installation day.

Delivery and installation arrangements vary according to building and location, so check our current delivery areas for more information.

Do You Need an Insulated Prefab Shed?

If the building is primarily for storing garden tools, pots and outdoor equipment, full insulation may be unnecessary. If you expect to spend substantial periods inside it as a hobby space, work area or retreat, insulation becomes much more important.

Insulation helps reduce rapid changes in internal temperature and can make a well-specified building more comfortable for extended use. However, insulation works as part of the complete building specification and should not be considered in isolation from glazing, ventilation, floor construction and the intended use.

Customers planning regular personal use should compare the appropriate buildings available with insulation before deciding.

Painted or Natural Timber?

A natural timber finish gives you flexibility to apply your own chosen treatment or colour. In contrast, a professionally finished building saves time and can make the shed feel immediately integrated into the garden.

If appearance is particularly important, consider the colours of your fencing, house, planting, paving and other garden structures rather than choosing a shed colour in isolation. Our factory-finished shed collection shows the different types of result that can be achieved.

Common Mistakes When Buying a Prefab Shed

Buying purely on price

The least expensive shed is not necessarily the least expensive building to own. Compare the complete specification, what is included, likely maintenance, delivery charges and installation rather than judging two buildings from price alone.

Choosing a building that is too small

This is one of the most common regrets we see. Storage requirements tend to grow. If your available garden space and budget allow it, give yourself some spare capacity rather than filling the shed on the first day.

Measuring only the footprint

Remember roof overhangs, door opening space, nearby fences and room required for future maintenance. The nominal building dimensions are only part of the space-planning exercise.

Ignoring door dimensions

Make sure the largest item you intend to store can actually pass through the doorway. Double doors can be extremely useful for mowers, machinery, larger bicycles and bulky garden furniture.

Putting a good shed on a poor base

A shed relies on the foundation below it. Starting with an inadequate or uneven base can undermine the benefits of buying a better-quality building.

Forgetting about installation access

Check gates, passageways and corners between the road and the final position. The finished shed may fit perfectly while the prefabricated panels needed to build it cannot reach the site.

Not considering where windows face

Window positions influence natural light, internal shelving and privacy. Think about the inside of the building at the same time as you think about how it looks from the garden.

Treating all prefabricated sheds as the same

Prefab is a construction method, not a quality standard. Look carefully at timber, framing, cladding, roof, floor, glazing and installation before comparing one building with another.

Which Style of Prefab Building Might Suit Your Garden?

Standard rectangular buildings suit most gardens, but the position available sometimes dictates the design. Narrow spaces may benefit from a different roof or layout, while awkward garden corners can sometimes be used far more efficiently with a purpose-designed building.

If you’re short on space, have a look at our smaller sheds first. For a narrow space down the side of the house or along a boundary, a lean-to shed can work particularly well. And don’t overlook an awkward corner of the garden – one of our corner sheds can often make very good use of space that would otherwise be wasted.

Keen gardeners who want both working space and storage may prefer one of the buildings in our gardening and potting range.

Our Prefab Shed Buying Checklist

  • Decide exactly what the building will be used for.
  • Measure the available garden area accurately.
  • Check the largest items that need to pass through the door.
  • Allow room for access and maintenance around the building.
  • Choose between apex, pent or another suitable roof arrangement.
  • Decide where doors and windows need to be positioned.
  • Compare timber, framing, cladding, floor, roof and glazing specifications.
  • Confirm whether delivery and installation are included for your chosen building and location.
  • Make sure the proposed base meets the building requirements.
  • Check the complete delivery route before placing the order.
  • Consider paint, insulation, shelving and other options before manufacture.
  • Allow some additional storage capacity for future requirements.

Why Seeing a Shed Before Buying Can Be Worthwhile

Product specifications are important, but there are some aspects of a garden building that are much easier to judge in person. Standing inside allows you to appreciate the real internal space, headroom, door width, natural light and general feel of the construction.

It also lets you compare details such as timber, framing, doors, glazing and finishes side by side. We have supplied garden buildings for decades, and one of the most useful things a customer can do before making a substantial purchase is inspect representative buildings rather than relying solely on photographs.

If you can visit us, you can view buildings at our Surrey display site near Guildford, Woking and Ripley and discuss the intended use, available garden space and possible specification with the team.

Prefab Sheds Frequently Asked Questions

What does prefab shed mean?

A prefab shed is a shed manufactured in sections before delivery. The principal wall and roof components arrive ready to be assembled on a prepared base, reducing the amount of construction work required in your garden.

Is a prefab shed the same as a flat-pack shed?

Not necessarily. Both are prepared before delivery, but the term prefab can include substantial pre-manufactured wall panels and professionally installed buildings. A flat-pack building is commonly supplied as smaller components specifically for the purchaser or installer to assemble.

Are prefab sheds strong?

They can be extremely substantial, but strength depends on the specification rather than the fact that the shed is prefabricated. Check the framing, timber, cladding, floor and roof construction when comparing buildings.

What are your timber prefab sheds made from?

Our timber prefab shed ranges use redwood deal rather than cheaper whitewood, with substantial structural framing. Specifications vary between individual models, so the relevant product information should always be checked before ordering.

Do prefab sheds come with a floor?

Our timber buildings shown in this category are supplied with timber floors, but buyers should always check the individual model specification. This is especially important when comparing sheds from different manufacturers because some apparently low prices may exclude parts you expected to be included.

Can a prefab shed be made to a non-standard size?

Yes, bespoke options are available on selected ranges. Depending on the model, it may be possible to alter dimensions, door positions, window positions and other details to make better use of your available space.

Can I choose where the doors and windows go?

Selected ranges allow changes to door and window positions. This is worth considering before ordering because the layout affects access, natural light, shelving and how effectively you can use the interior.

Can you get prefab sheds with double doors?

Yes. Double-door options are available on selected buildings and are particularly useful when storing lawnmowers, bicycles, machinery and bulky garden equipment.

Can a prefabricated shed be insulated?

Yes, insulation is available as an option on selected buildings. It is worth considering when the shed will be occupied for hobbies, work or other activities rather than used only for basic storage.

Can I have a prefab shed painted before delivery?

Painted finish options are available on selected timber buildings. A pre-finished building can save considerable time and allows the shed to complement fencing, planting and other garden features from the day it is installed.

Do I need a base for a prefab shed?

Yes. A suitable firm and level base is essential. The correct base supports the building, helps panels and doors remain aligned and contributes significantly to its long-term performance.

Do you assemble prefab sheds?

Professional installation is included with many of our wooden buildings, subject to the product, delivery area, suitable access and other applicable conditions. Check the individual product information and delivery details before ordering.

How do I choose the right size?

Start by measuring the space you have available, then think about what you’ll actually be storing. Make sure there’s enough room to get in and out comfortably, open the doors and reach shelves without having to move everything around. If you have the space, it’s usually worth going a little bigger than you think you need – sheds have a habit of filling up surprisingly quickly.

Should I choose an apex or pent roof?

An apex roof has a central ridge and a traditional appearance. In contrast, a pent roof slopes predominantly in one direction and can work particularly well in contemporary or restricted locations. The best choice depends on appearance, position, height requirements and how you want to use the internal space.

Can I see the buildings before ordering?

Yes. Customers can visit our Surrey garden building display site near Guildford, Woking and Ripley to inspect representative buildings, compare construction and discuss suitable options before ordering.

Need Help Choosing?

A prefab shed should solve a storage or space problem for many years, so it is worth getting the specification right at the beginning. Start with what you intend to use the building for, measure the site and access carefully, then compare construction rather than choosing from photographs alone.

If you are uncertain about size, layout, base requirements or available options, speak to us before placing your order. A small change to the door position, window arrangement or dimensions can sometimes turn an acceptable shed into one that works far better for your garden.

  • 5 Reasons Why You Need an Insulated Garden Shed
Picture this for a moment: a warm, sunny day, maybe the first warm day of the year. You’re gearing up for a relaxing afternoon of gardening, getting your garden summer-ready. You head to your garden shed, eager to retrieve some tools and get to work. But as you swing open the door, a wave of stifling heat hits you, and you’re met with a disappointing sight. Everything in the garden shed - your tools, outdoor cushions, and maybe even your Christmas decoration looks far from maintained. But that’s what happens when extreme temperatures hit. They take a toll and can sometimes damage belongings beyond repair, adding to your already long list of outdoor maintenance tasks. An insulated shed can relieve this stress and ensure your belongings are always in good condition.
  • Garden Shed Insulation How Proper Insulation Can Help Alleviate Condensation
The satisfaction of gardening stems from a clear vision and effective management. Refining pathways, cultivating flower beds, and growing vegetables are rewarding practices to plan and accomplish. While gardening is a fulfilling hobby, it also brings unique challenges. How will you keep soil healthy during a warm summer or protect against pests? These challenges are opportunities to demonstrate your skills and commitment. Additionally, how will you maintain your garden buildings? Maintaining garden utilities is becoming more important. Although sheds, summerhouses, workshops, and other outbuildings are built from durable materials and treated for weather resistance, ongoing exposure to the elements can still impact them. Condensation can be an issue.
  • How Many Sheds Can I Have in My Garden?
There is no legal limit on the number of sheds you may place on your property. The key requirement is that each shed complies with UK planning regulations. What really matters is whether each shed meets the permitted development rights, which set out rules for the size, height, location, and overall footprint of outbuildings in your garden. These regulations are designed to ensure that garden buildings remain proportionate to your property and do not have an unreasonable impact on neighbouring homes or the surrounding area. Understanding these rules will help you determine whether you can have two sheds on your property — or even more — without needing planning permission.
  • How to Choose, Build & Maintain Your Shed
When purchasing a garden building, you have many companies to choose from, each offering a wide range of prices and quality. It is important to ensure your outbuilding is built to last. Many companies do not offer the option to view their structures before purchase, so you may not know the quality until delivery. We provide large showrooms where you can inspect our Diamond, Sapphire and Platinum heavy-duty sheds and workshops in person. You can make an informed decision by examining our products before purchasing. If a company does not allow you to view their products in advance, proceed with caution.

Frequently Asked Questions About Prefab Shed

No results!
  • Can I run electricity to my garden shed in Guildford or Woking?
Yes - but when running electricity, you’ll need to comply with Part P of Building Regulations (electrical safety). If you plan to use the shed as an office or workshop, make sure your electrical setup is done safely (by a qualified electrician) and documented, especially for insurance and resale.
  • Can I use a prefab shed as a home office or garden room in Guildford (Surrey)?
Yes — many prefab sheds or garden rooms are repurposed as offices. But if you use it as a workspace, consider: insulation, ventilation, electrical wiring, lighting, and possibly even heating. Also, check whether its size or use requires building regulations (depending on its structure, size, and equipment).
  • Do I need planning permission to build a prefab shed in Guildford or Woking?
According to planning rules, many sheds fall under “permitted development” so don’t need permission. But there are restrictions: e.g., if the shed is within 2m of a boundary, the height must be less than 2.5m. Also, it must not cover more than 50% of your total garden area for permitted development.
  • How long does a prefab garden shed last in the UK (Surrey area)?
With good installation and maintenance, a quality prefab shed can last many years. The lifespan depends on the material: treated timber can last decades if maintained, while metal or plastic sheds may vary depending on build quality, exposure to weather, and the construction of the base and roof.
  • How much does it cost to install a prefab garden shed in Guildford, Surrey and England?
According to local estimates, for a small wooden shed (e.g., 6ft x 4ft) in Guildford, supply and installation can range from £473 to c. £650, depending on the builder /installer. 1st Choice Leisure Buildings offers FREE installation on all wooden buildings. The actual cost will depend on shed size, materials, base type, and any groundwork required.
  • What base should I prepare for a prefab garden shed in Surrey?
You’ll need a stable, level base. Common bases include crushed stone, concrete slab, or concrete piers. The choice depends on your budget, the ground conditions, and the size / weight of your shed. A good base helps prevent rot, sagging, and structural problems. (This is more general advice, but very valuable to users.)
  • What maintenance is required for a wooden prefab shed in Surrey’s climate?
Wooden sheds require regular maintenance to protect against moisture, rot, and insects. Applying preservative or wood sealant every year or every few years (depending on the product) helps. Ensure good ventilation (windows or vents) to prevent condensation, and check the base for drainage to prevent water from pooling under or around the shed.
  • What size garden shed can I build in Surrey without needing planning permission?
Under permitted development rules: for England, a shed (outbuilding) generally doesn’t need planning permission if it’s single storey, eaves under 2.5m, and overall height is less than 4m for a pitched roof or 3m for other roof types. If it’s within 2m of the boundary, the max height is 2.5m. Also, outbuildings must not cover more than 50% of the “curtilage” (garden) of the house.
  • When do I need building regulations for a garden shed or room in Guildford / Woking / Surrey / England?
According to guidance, many small outbuildings are exempt from building regulations. For example, if the internal floor area is under 15m² and the shed has no sleeping accommodation, then building regulations usually don’t apply. For sheds between 15m² and 30m², building regs may still be avoided if the structure is non-combustible or more than 1m from the boundary.
  • Where can I buy prefab garden sheds in Guildford / Woking (Surrey)?
There are local and national suppliers that deliver to Surrey. For example, 1st Choice Leisure Buildings offers a range of prefab garden buildings and has a local display site. Also, custom / local garden building companies operate in Surrey (e.g., Woking / Guildford) and may offer site visits, bespoke designs, or installation.
