Potting Sheds for Growing, Working and Garden Storage

A good potting shed gives you somewhere bright and practical to sow seeds, take cuttings, repot plants and keep gardening tools, pots and compost close at hand. Unlike an ordinary storage shed, the buildings on this page use generous glazing and, on selected models, roof glazing to bring more natural light into the working and growing area.

This page is part of our wider garden sheds range but concentrates specifically on potting sheds for sale. The products currently displayed include dedicated Diamond and Platinum potting sheds, along with greenhouse-shed combinations where growing and storage share one building.

Which Potting Shed Should I Choose?

If you want a traditional dedicated potting shed, the Platinum Alresford, Platinum Alton, Farringdon Potting Shed and Medstead Potting Shed are all actual products displayed here. These buildings are available from around 6×6 up to 12×8 depending on the model and include useful bench or shelving arrangements and professional fitting within the applicable delivery area.

The Diamond Petworth, Portslade and Pulborough offer a much wider size range, extending from compact 6×4 buildings to around 16×12. These are particularly worth comparing if you want a larger working area, more storage space or greater flexibility over the footprint.

What About Greenhouse and Shed Combinations?

The Bramdean Greenhouse-Shed and Graffham Greenhouse Shed are actual products on this page and combine growing and storage functions within one structure. These make sense when you want a clearly defined area for plants, plus enclosed space for tools, compost, and gardening equipment.

The Platinum Herriard Greenhouse is also shown here and is the most greenhouse-orientated product in the current selection. It’s best when maximising light and plant growing matters more than a large enclosed timber storage area.

What Is the Difference Between a Potting Shed and an Ordinary Shed?

A conventional shed is primarily designed around storage. A potting shed gives much more attention to daylight and working space, normally with larger areas of glazing and a potting bench or shelving arrangement where you can work with plants and seed trays.

If your main requirement is storing lawnmowers, bicycles and bulky machinery, an ordinary garden shed may still be the better choice. If sowing, propagation and plant care are important as well as storage, a potting shed becomes much more useful.

How Much Glazing Do I Need?

More glass can bring valuable light to seedlings and young plants, but I would look at where the glazing is positioned rather than simply choosing the building with the most glass. What matters is the light reaching the potting bench and plant-growing area.

The Diamond Petworth, for example, uses a half-glazed roof together with toughened-glass windows, while the different products on this page use their own combinations of vertical glazing and roof light. Think about where the building will stand and how sunlight moves through your garden before choosing.

How Important Is the Potting Bench?

A proper potting bench makes a major difference because it gives you a permanent surface for seed trays, compost and pots rather than having to set up a temporary table every time you work. Several of the products currently displayed include a bench or bench-shelf arrangement.

I think about bench depth and length as well as whether there is useful storage underneath. A very long bench may sound attractive, but it can reduce the wall and floor space available for larger tools, bags of compost and other gardening equipment.

What Size Potting Shed Should I Buy?

For occasional seed sowing and a modest collection of tools, a compact 6×4 or 6×6 building may be perfectly adequate. If you grow a lot of plants, store bags of compost or want several trays and pots inside at once, extra floor and bench space quickly becomes valuable.

The Diamond Petworth, Portslade and Pulborough models extend to around 16×12, so there is plenty of scope for customers wanting a substantial gardening workspace rather than a small seasonal potting area.

Are These Potting Sheds Professionally Fitted?

Professional assembly is included with the relevant Diamond and Platinum potting sheds shown on this page, subject to the applicable delivery area, suitable garden access and having the correct level base ready before installation.

A firm, flat and level foundation is important because it keeps the building square, allows doors and windows to operate properly and helps protect the structure over the long term. Always prepare the base using the precise measurements of the particular potting shed you order.

My Experience With Potting Sheds Goes Back to 1979

I’m Robin Antill, founder of 1st Choice Leisure Buildings. I left school at 15 and started my own business in 1979 trading as Marina Sheds. I learnt the business hands-on by making, selling and delivering timber buildings and dealing directly with customers, so my understanding of what makes a practical garden building comes from manufacturing experience rather than simply selling products online.

I sold Marina Sheds in 1990, although unfortunately I did not receive all the money which was due from the sale. It was a difficult business lesson, but I remained in the garden-building industry and carried on.

In 1992 we expanded beyond sheds and added summerhouses, garages, garden rooms and log cabins. That broader direction led to the name Titan Garden Buildings. My son Craig joined me in 1992 after studying carpentry at Guildford College from 1990, bringing his own practical carpentry and timber-construction knowledge into the business.

We sold Titan Garden Buildings in 1998 and in 2000 formed 1st Choice Leisure Buildings. Rather than being tied to one manufacturer’s products, Craig and I wanted to use our experience to compare quality buildings from different manufacturers and offer customers a genuine choice.

Craig now runs the day-to-day business, and I remain involved to support him and the team whenever required. You can read more about our history on the About 1st Choice Leisure Buildings page.

Why Does My Experience Matter When Choosing a Potting Shed?

Having manufactured timber buildings myself, I tend to look beyond an attractive photograph. With potting sheds, I look carefully at the timber, framing, floor, glazing, ventilation, working space and where the bench actually sits because those details determine whether the building will be pleasant and practical to use.

If you want plenty of size flexibility and practical value, I would compare the Diamond Petworth, Portslade and Pulborough. If you want a dedicated higher-specification potting environment, look at Alresford, Alton, Farringdon and Medstead. If growing and separate storage need to work together, Bramdean or Graffham may suit you better.

How Do I Choose the Best Potting Shed?

Start by deciding how serious you are about growing and what needs to stay permanently inside the building. Think about seed trays, pots, compost, tools, shelving, and the length of bench you genuinely need, then consider glazing and ventilation.

If you are comparing potting sheds for sale, I would choose according to how you garden rather than simply buying the cheapest or most heavily glazed model. If you are unsure which of the actual products on this page suits you, please ask us, and we can help you compare them.

Can I See Potting Sheds Before Buying?

Whenever practical, I strongly recommend seeing garden buildings before making a final decision. You can visit our Surrey garden building display site between Guildford and Woking, where almost 80 garden buildings are normally available to inspect and compare.

Photographs are useful, but standing inside a potting shed gives you a much clearer understanding of the bench, glazing, floor, working space and overall construction. I started selling sheds in 1979 and still believe that seeing the quality for yourself is one of the best ways to make an informed buying decision.
