Large Sheds for Storage, DIY and Workshop Use

If you need considerably more space than a conventional garden shed provides, our large sheds offer room for machinery, bicycles, tools, shelving, workbenches and bulky equipment. This page is part of our wider garden sheds range but concentrates specifically on bigger timber buildings where space, access and construction become particularly important.

The actual products currently displayed here are the Fareham Apex, Pent and Reverse Apex, Southampton Apex, Pent and Transverse, Diamond Barnham Apex and Pent, Portsmouth Apex and Platinum Winchester Apex, Pent and Transverse. Between them, these big sheds cover a substantial range of sizes and specifications rather than trying to make one building suitable for everybody.

How Big Are the Large Sheds on This Page?

The Diamond Barnham Apex and Diamond Barnham Pent extend from 6×4 up to 28×12. Fareham, Southampton and Portsmouth models extend to 20×16, while the Platinum Winchester range reaches 28×16, making it the largest standard size range currently represented on this page.

I would not simply buy the biggest building your garden will take. Measure what actually needs to go inside, allow room for shelving and workbenches and think about how you will move equipment through the building. A well-planned 16×10 can sometimes be more useful than a badly organised building with considerably more floor space.

Which Large Shed Should I Choose?

If your priority is practical space and value, I recommend comparing the Diamond Barnham Apex and Pent. Their range extends to 28×12; larger sizes have double-door options, and professional fitting is included within the applicable delivery conditions. They are particularly relevant for substantial storage, tools, equipment and DIY where insulation is not your main priority.

The Platinum Fareham Apex, Fareham Pent and Fareham Reverse Apex provide a different specification. They extend to 20×16 and offer free assembly, colour-finish choices and full-insulation options, making them worth comparing when the building will be used regularly for hobbies or practical projects as well as storage.

The Southampton Apex, Southampton Pent and Southampton Transverse are also genuine large-building choices up to 20×16. The different layouts let you consider where the main elevation and entrance work best in your garden, rather than choosing based on roof appearance alone.

The Portsmouth Apex provides another large pressure-treated option, while the Platinum Winchester Apex, Winchester Pent and Winchester Transverse extend up to 28×16 and are worth considering where both substantial length and width are required.

Barnham, Fareham, Southampton or Winchester?

I see the choice quite simply. Barnham is worth considering when you want plenty of practical timber-building space without automatically paying for a higher specification. Fareham and Southampton make more sense when pressure-treated construction and full insulation are useful because you expect to spend more time inside. Winchester becomes particularly relevant when you need one of the biggest footprints available on this page together with a higher specification and greater multi-purpose potential.

Can a Large Shed Be Used as a Workshop?

Yes. Many of the large sheds displayed here provide enough room to combine storage with a practical DIY or workshop area. The larger footprints let you position machinery, tools, and storage around the perimeter while keeping space for workbenches and clear access through the building. If workshop use will be the building’s main purpose, it is also worth comparing our heavy duty workshops.

If workshop use is important, I would plan the interior before choosing the shed. Decide where the benches, machinery and storage will sit and consider the door and window positions. On a big shed, getting the layout right can be more important than simply gaining another couple of feet in length. Our garden workshop ideas guide has further advice on layouts, equipment and creating a practical working space.

Can Large Sheds Be Insulated?

Yes. Full-insulation options are available on the Fareham, Southampton, Portsmouth and Winchester buildings currently displayed on this page. This can be worthwhile if you expect to spend several hours at a time inside for DIY, hobbies or projects.

I would not automatically specify insulation because it appears on the options list. A large building used primarily for machinery, bicycles and garden storage has very different requirements from one used regularly as a working space. Buy the specification appropriate to how you will genuinely use it.

Are These Large Sheds Professionally Fitted?

Professional fitting or assembly is included with the large timber buildings displayed here, subject to the individual manufacturer’s delivery area, suitable site access and the correct base being ready before installation. That is particularly valuable with larger sectional buildings because there is considerably more material to handle and assemble than with a small garden shed.

You will still need a firm and level foundation. Always prepare the base from the exact dimensions supplied for the building you order rather than relying solely on its nominal size. Our garden workshop base guide explains the main foundation options and why a level, properly supported base matters.

What Should You Check Before Buying a Big Shed?

After working with garden buildings for many years, I would look beyond the photograph, price and overall dimensions. Check the framing, cladding, floor, roof, doors, glazing and treatment. On big sheds, door width and position are especially important because moving machinery or bulky equipment through an awkward entrance can become frustrating very quickly.

Also think about future use. If the building is likely to develop from straightforward storage into a hobby or working area, paying attention to windows, insulation and internal layout now may save you making compromises later.

My Experience With Sheds Goes Back to 1979

I’m Robin Antill, founder of 1st Choice Leisure Buildings. I left school at 15 and started my own business in 1979 trading as Marina Sheds. I learnt the business hands-on by making and selling sheds, delivering buildings and dealing directly with customers. Hence, my understanding of timber buildings comes from practical manufacturing experience rather than simply selling somebody else’s products.

I sold Marina Sheds in 1990, although unfortunately I did not receive all the money which was due from the sale. It was a difficult business lesson, but I stayed in the garden-building industry and carried on.

In 1992 we expanded beyond sheds and added summerhouses, garages, garden rooms and log cabins. That wider direction led to the name Titan Garden Buildings. My son Craig joined me in 1992 after studying carpentry at Guildford College from 1990, bringing his own practical woodworking and timber-construction knowledge into the business.

We sold Titan Garden Buildings in 1998 and in 2000 formed 1st Choice Leisure Buildings. Rather than being restricted to one manufacturer’s products, Craig and I wanted to use our experience to compare buildings from established manufacturers and offer customers a genuine choice.

Craig now runs the day-to-day business, and I remain involved to support him and the team whenever required. You can read the full story on our About 1st Choice Leisure Buildings page.

Why Does My Experience Matter When Choosing a Large Shed?

When you have manufactured sheds yourself, you tend to look at them differently. I look at framing, floors, roofs, doors, timber, glazing and how the building has been put together. Two large sheds can look remarkably similar in photographs while having very different specifications and being suited to very different jobs.

That is why I would not automatically recommend the most expensive building. If Barnham gives you all the storage and working space you need, that may be the sensible choice. If insulation and more intensive use matter, Fareham or Southampton may suit you better. If you need maximum size and flexibility, Winchester deserves closer consideration.

How Do I Choose the Best Large Shed?

Start with what you need the building to do, then work backwards towards the specification. Measure the equipment, decide how much working space you need, consider door access, and determine whether insulation and windows are genuinely useful. Only then would I choose the final size and model.

If you want to compare particular dimensions, our sheds by size section lets you look at the available footprints more closely. If you are unsure whether Barnham, Fareham, Southampton, Portsmouth or Winchester is right for you, please ask us. Craig, the team, and I have a great deal of practical garden-building experience.

Can I See Large Sheds Before Buying?

Whenever practical, I strongly recommend seeing garden buildings before making a final decision. You can visit our Surrey garden building display site at Sutton Green, between Guildford, Woking and Ripley, where around 80 representative buildings are normally available to inspect.

Photographs and specifications are useful, but standing inside a large building allows you to judge the floor, doors, timber, headroom and usable space for yourself. I started selling sheds in 1979 and still believe that seeing the building and understanding its specification are two of the best ways to make an informed decision.
