Choosing a 5m x 3m Shed: Dimensions and Garden Storage
A 5m x 3m shed describes a rectangular footprint of 15 square metres, approximately 161.46 square feet. The nearest whole-foot imperial size is < strong> 16 ft x 10ft, approximately 4.88m x 3.05m. This is slightly shorter and wider than an exact 5m x 3m building. If either dimension is a strict limit, request an exact-size quotation and check roof overhang and required clearances.
Is a 16×10 shed exactly 5m x 3m?
No. A nominal 16×10 shed has a footprint of 160 square feet, approximately 14.86 square metres. Its ten-foot side is 3.048 m, so that it may exceed a strict three-metre space even before roof overhang. Check actual external dimensions, internal space and base requirements for the chosen configuration.
Can I combine garden storage and workshop space?
A building around this size can accommodate equipment storage and a planned DIY or hobby area if your bench, machinery and working clearances fit. Measure the largest items, mark out shelving and leave a clear route through the building. Check the door opening and floor specification for bulky or heavy equipment.
Compare Suitable Designs in the Nearest Imperial Size: 16×10
Compare these 16 designs using their 16ft x 10ft configuration. This is the nearest whole-foot size to 5m x 3m, not an exact metric equivalent. Request the 16×10 configuration and confirm its specifications, dimensions and quotation before ordering. The 16×10 size is a nearby imperial option; it does not provide an exact five-metre length. Ask about bespoke sizing if you need precise metric dimensions.
Sapphire Swanwick and Cadnam sheds
Swanwick is the standard-height range; Cadnam is the tall-height range. Compare roof style, entrance position and usable wall space:
Platinum sheds and workshops
Platinum Southampton sheds and workshops
Platinum Winchester summer rooms
Winchester buildings are marketed as summer rooms. Compare their glazed doors, windows and layout with your intended hobby or storage use:
Which roof and entrance layout should I choose?
An apex roof has two slopes meeting at a ridge; a pent roof slopes in one direction. A reverse apex changes the pitched-roof orientation. Use the model’s drawing to check entrance position, height and drainage direction. Plan shelves and bulky equipment around doors and windows, and compare the timber, framing, floor, and roof specifications before choosing.
Wall and Roof Insulation and Colour Paint Treatment
Can I choose an insulated shed around 5m x 3m?
Optional wall and roof insulation is available on the listed Sapphire and Platinum ranges. Confirm the insulation and lining specification for your selected configuration, including any reduction in usable internal space. For an exact 5m x 3m bespoke building, ask the team to confirm both the size and available options.
Explore our insulated sheds. Insulation may help for hobby use, but heating, ventilation and moisture management need separate consideration.
Can I order a painted shed?
Optional colour paint treatment is available. Browse our painted sheds and confirm shades, finishes and maintenance requirements for your chosen model. Ask about samples if a precise colour matters, as photographs and screens can change its appearance.
Assembly Service, Base Preparation and Garden Access Information
Free assembly is included on all our wooden sheds. Have a suitable prepared base and adequate access ready for installation. Confirm delivery coverage and any location or access restrictions before ordering.
What base size should I prepare?
Obtain the exact base requirements for the selected building before starting work. Do not prepare a 5m x 3m base for a nominal 16×10 shed without checking the supplied dimensions. The foundation must be firm, flat and level, with the required clearance around the building for installation and maintenance.
See our base preparation and additional garden building services. Base preparation is separate from the included shed assembly.
What access should I check?
Measure gateways, passages and tight corners along the route from the delivery point to the base. Tell the team about steps, slopes, and low overhead clearance so they can assess the route for the building’s panels.
Expert Advice from Robin Antill and Help Before You Order
Robin Antill, founder of 1st Choice Leisure Buildings, began working with sheds and garden buildings in 1979. His manufacturing and retail experience informs our practical advice about construction, layout and installation.
For a metric-size category, start with measurements. Decide whether you need an exact 5m x 3m footprint or can accommodate the nearest 16 x 10 size. Then check the door opening, shelving layout and internal space against what you intend to store.
Visit our Surrey garden building show site at Sutton Green, near Guildford and Woking to inspect representative buildings. Contact us first if you want to see a particular model or size, as every configuration may not be on display.
Your ordering checklist
- Confirm whether your space permits 16×10 or requires an exact 5m x 3m building.
- Check external dimensions, roof overhang, clearances and base requirements.
- Measure equipment against the internal space and door opening.
- Confirm the layout, insulation and colour paint options.
- Prepare the base and confirm delivery access before installation.
