An internal floor prevents rising damp.
Spray impregnated doors & windows:
Spray-impregnation is a treatment to protect windows and doors against the fungi and rotting process. This treatment will take care that all parts are protected, that can’t be reached after installation. You can choose between a colourless spray-impregnation or one of Lugarde’s four translucent colours. For optimal protection we advise you to stain the windows and doors within one year. Attention If you choose the paint treatment for your windows and doors it is not necessary to choose the spray-impregnation. During staining a pre-treatment is included. Because Lugarde check EVERY order, this will be checked accurately in advance.
Painted doors & windows:
Would you like to paint as less as possible? Then choose a factory-treatment for your window and doors. Because you want to enjoy your log cabin as long as possible, we will protect your windows and doors against weather influences. This is done by treating them twice with a spray-treatment as a pre-treatment and then by painting in the colour of your choice. With these three layers the windows and doors are protected against the ‘great outdoors’. They will use the Dutch quality brand Sigma paint. Attention If you choose the paint treatment for your windows and doors it is not necessary to choose the spray-impregnation. During staining a pre-treatment of spray-impregnation is included. Because Lugarde check EVERY order, this will be checked accurately in advance.
Spray treatment of entire building:
Spray Treated Walls.
The entire building is treated including the parts that can’t be reached after assembly.
Your log cabin will be protected against the fungi and rotting process from day one.
You can choose from four translucent colours.
You will still need to treat the outside of your cabin within one year to protect it against any weather influences.
Pressure treatment is an alternative for staining and is an option for your cabin. So what does pressure treating mean?
Additional treatments like staining are not necessary anymore. You have a choice between a green or brown colour.
With pressure treating, the impregnating fluid is forced into the wood. The impregnated wood becomes swollen, so it is necessary to allow a longer delivery time to allow for drying.
When a log cabin is pressure treated there is no need for additional treatment.
After a while the wood will start to turn grey. The wood does not have to be stained but it is possible if you don’t like the grey colour.
Due to there high pressure during pressure treatment it is possible that the wood will change. Sometimes cracks and chinks may occur.
Fascia boards, roof beams and canopies will also be pressure treated.
Windows and doors will not be pressure treated.
|✅||We use only high-quality timber that originates from northern European countries with cold climates. The lower temperatures cause the trees to grow more slowly, meaning that the growth rings are closer together and the wood is more stable and durable.|
|✅||Our timber is kiln dried to a moisture content of approximately 14%-16% in a special drying room , thus reducing subsequent shrinkage.|
|✅||We keep wood waste and sawdust to a minimum and reuse it for other purposes.|

Choosing a Stairway for your Log Home
What you need to consider when choosing a stairway for your log home. This is not normally relevant for the standard log cabin but it’s interesting to see what is involved.Stairs are one of the most used and hardest working items in your home. They are pounded, jumped upon and abused more than any other horizontal surface, so they should get more consideration in your planning phase than just “they look good”. Log stairs in particular can have hidden faults and are prone to eventual failure if these are not addressed in the construction of the stairway.
First and foremost, metal and wood do not play nicely together in stairway construction. Lag bolts or a treaded rod are often secured in the soft inner core of the log and under normal everyday use, the treads will start to loosen up even if you keep tightening the screws. It’s obvious it will not last and is a construction flaw. If you ever walked across a squeaky floor or stairs that squeaked, this means that the metal holding these pieces of wood together has failed.
Secondly as mentioned before, the inner core is soft and is easily compressed so that if a long stair life is hoped to be achieved, connections have to be incorporated with the outer shell of the log using wooden dowels and strong rigid glue that dries as hard as a rock.
Thirdly, the glue is very important. We found that basic carpenters glue does not work well with logs. We discovered a special hybrid poly glue from Scandinavia that works best and nothing moves after it’s glued, which is what you need for a long life of your stairway.
For example the treads on these stairs are all natural they have a 2 1/2″ solid slow growth hard maple dowel. This is like using a baseball bat for a dowel drilled 10mm into the tread for maximum glue strength.
To provide optimal support we drill at a 4 degree angle that mimics the natural strength of a branch into the center post. We drill through the hard outer crust of the post of the log cabin home into the soft inner core and then through the other side of the log into the solid outer layers stopping just short of the outer wall.
The end result is a stair tread solidly glued that mimics a natural tree branch. Our glue has a strength of 7000 lbs. per square inch so this gives approximately 50,000 lbs. of holding strength. I have personally lifted up a car with one tread just to test its sturdiness.
The stair treads are then capable of supporting the hand railings because they are strong and should never loosen. The key to building long lasting stairs is keep the wood happy by crafting them in a way that works best for the wood. Happy stairs are healthy stairs!
