Choosing a Quality Wooden Shed
Wooden Sheds for Practical Garden Storage and More
A well-made wooden shed remains one of the most useful buildings you can add to a garden. Timber offers a traditional look, plenty of size and layout options, and, depending on the model, features such as painted finishes, insulation, double doors, and bespoke configurations. A good wood shed can store tools, bicycles, lawnmowers and furniture or provide space for DIY and hobbies.

What Should I Look for in a Wooden Shed?
I would look beyond the photograph and headline size. The framing behind the cladding, the floor, roof, doors and glazing all affect how substantial a shed feels and how well it performs in everyday use. The wooden buildings on this page use redwood deal timber, wooden floors and roofs and toughened glazing, although exact specifications vary between individual ranges.
The roof also deserves attention because the covering affects appearance, maintenance and weather protection. Our guide to different shed roofing options explains the main choices and their advantages and disadvantages.
Door size is also important. A single door may be enough for hand tools and basic garden storage. In contrast, double doors make life much easier if you need to move a lawnmower, furniture or larger machinery in and out regularly.
Comparing Wooden Shed Ranges and Designs
Which Wooden Shed Range Should I Choose?
If practical storage, value and flexibility are your priorities, I would start with the Diamond Chichester Apex, Chichester Pent or Woodgate Reverse Apex. Chichester is available from 4×4 to 24×12 and offers free fitting, colour-finish choices, configurable doors and windows and bespoke options.
The Diamond Barnham Apex and Pent are other options on this page and extend from 6×4 to 28×12. The Barnham Apex is particularly relevant if you need a larger storage or workshop-style timber building without automatically moving to the highest specification.
The Sapphire Swanwick and Cadnam models are displayed in apex, pent and reverse-apex layouts. The Sapphire Swanwick Apex, for example, runs from 7×5 to 12×10 and offers pressure-treated construction, free fitting, colour-finish and full-insulation options.
For larger or more regularly used buildings, compare Portsmouth, Fareham, Southampton and Winchester. The Platinum Fareham Apex, for example, extends from 8×6 to 20×16 and offers free assembly, colour finishes and full insulation. Winchester models go even further, up to 28×16.
What About Corner, Narrow and Barn-Style Wooden Sheds?
A conventional rectangular apex or pent shed is not right for every garden. This page also includes Storrington, Worthing, Eversley and Bursledon corner buildings, the Shoreham Narrow Shed, and Ditchling and Durrington Dutch Barns.
Here the shape of the garden is driving the decision. A narrow shed can make useful storage from a side passage, while a corner building may use an awkward part of the garden more effectively than a standard rectangle. Are Wooden Sheds Suitable for DIY and Hobbies?
Yes. Many of the larger wooden sheds shown here provide enough room for workbenches, tools and organised storage. Barnham, Fareham, Southampton, Portsmouth, and Winchester all offer larger footprints that work well for DIY and hobby use. If you expect to spend regular periods inside, I would pay attention to windows, door layout and insulation rather than size alone. A slightly smaller shed with the right layout can be more useful than a much larger building which has been poorly planned. Can a Wooden Shed Be Insulated?
Yes. Full-insulation options are available on selected Sapphire and Platinum products displayed on this page, including Swanwick, Cadnam, Fareham, Southampton, Portsmouth and Winchester models.
I would only add insulation where it suits the intended use. If the shed will mainly store tools, bicycles and garden machinery, access and construction may matter more. If you expect to work or spend several hours inside, insulation becomes much more worthwhile. Are These Wooden Sheds Professionally Fitted?
Free professional fitting or assembly is included with the relevant wooden shed ranges shown here, subject to delivery area, access and having the correct base ready before installation. The live category specifically states free professional assembly on its timber ranges.
You will still need a firm and level foundation. A shed is only as good as the base beneath it, so always work from the exact dimensions supplied for your chosen model rather than relying only on the nominal size. Wooden Shed Experience Since 1979
My Experience With Wooden Sheds Goes Back to 1979
I’m Robin Antill, founder of 1st Choice Leisure Buildings. I left school at 15 and started my own business in 1979 trading as Marina Sheds. I learnt the trade hands-on by making, selling and delivering timber sheds and dealing directly with the people who were going to use them. That practical experience still shapes how I look at wooden buildings today.
I sold Marina Sheds in 1990, although unfortunately I did not receive all the money due from the sale. It was a difficult lesson, but it did not end my involvement in the garden-building industry.
In 1992 we expanded beyond traditional sheds and added summerhouses, garages, garden rooms and log cabins. That wider direction led to the name Titan Garden Buildings. My son Craig joined me in 1992 after studying carpentry at Guildford College from 1990, bringing his own practical carpentry and timber-construction knowledge into the business.
We sold Titan Garden Buildings in 1998 and in 2000 formed 1st Choice Leisure Buildings. Rather than being tied to one manufacturer’s products, Craig and I wanted to use our experience to select quality buildings from different manufacturers and offer customers a genuine choice.

Why Does My Experience Matter When Choosing a Wood Shed?
Having manufactured timber sheds myself, I tend to look beyond an attractive photograph. I want to know what timber has been used, how substantial the frame is, what the floor and roof are made from, and whether the doors, glazing, and installation suit how the building will actually be used.
That is why I do not believe everybody should automatically buy the highest specification. If a Diamond building gives you all the practical storage you need, that may be the right answer. If pressure-treated construction or insulation matters, Sapphire may suit you better. If you need a very large or more regularly used building, Fareham, Southampton, Portsmouth or Winchester may justify the extra specification.

How Do I Choose the Best Wooden Shed?
Start by deciding what will go inside, then measure the largest items and the available garden space. Consider door width, window position, shelving, and whether the shed is mainly for storage or will also be used for DIY or hobbies.
It is also sensible to check whether there are any restrictions affecting where the building can go. Many domestic sheds can be installed under permitted development rights, but circumstances vary, so read our garden shed planning permission guide if you are unsure.

Can I See Wooden Sheds Before Buying?
Whenever practical, I strongly recommend seeing garden buildings before making a final decision. You can visit our Surrey garden building display site between Guildford and Woking, where almost 80 timber, metal and concrete buildings are normally available to inspect and compare.
Photographs and specifications are useful, but standing inside a building tells you much more about the floor, doors, timber, headroom and overall construction. I started selling sheds in 1979 and still believe that seeing the quality for yourself is one of the best ways to make an informed buying decision.
From £1299
