Log Cabins & Garden Log Cabins for Sale

I’m Robin Antill, founder of 1st Choice Leisure Buildings, and I’ve worked with timber garden buildings since starting Marina Sheds in 1979.

If you’re comparing log cabins, garden cabins or garden log cabins, my advice is to choose around how you will actually use the building, rather than size or price alone.

Our log cabins for garden use include substantial 44mm and 70mm timber buildings for offices, gyms, studios, hobbies and relaxation, with double glazing, timber floors, insulation and professional installation available across selected ranges.

Which Log Cabin Is Right for Your Garden?

Choosing the right log cabin starts with deciding how you will actually use it. A garden cabin for relaxing during the warmer months has different requirements than a home office, gym, or studio used year-round. I suggest thinking about the intended use first, followed by the size, wall thickness, insulation, glazing, internal layout and available space in your garden. Our log cabin buyer’s guide explains the main points worth considering before making your choice.

For occasional leisure and hobby use, a good-quality 44mm cabin may be all you need. For regular use in colder weather, consider thicker walls and, importantly, roof and floor insulation. If you need separate spaces for work, hobbies or storage, a multi-room log cabin may make better use of your garden than two separate buildings.

44mm or 70mm Log Cabins?

A compact 44mm garden log cabin supplied and installed for one of our customers in Epsom. This Trentan Knaphill was specified with roof and floor insulation and guttering to create a practical garden room for comfortable use year-round.
Trentan Clockhouse log cabin
Our hard-working installers were recently in Epsom to build this Trentan Knaphill log cabin for one of our customers. Measuring 4m x 2.5m and constructed from substantial 44mm interlocking timber, this compact garden cabin makes good use of the available garden space without requiring a particularly large footprint. We also included roof and floor insulation for improved year-round comfort, together with guttering to help manage rainwater from the roof. It’s a good example of how a relatively compact garden log cabin can provide useful additional space while still being specified for more regular use throughout the seasons.

This is one of the questions we are asked most often. For many customers looking for a garden office, hobby room, studio, gym or general garden retreat, consider a quality 44mm cabin first. Our 44mm log cabins provide substantial interlocking timber walls and are suitable for a wide range of uses.

Our 70mm log cabins have thicker timber walls and are worth considering where the building will have particularly demanding or frequent year-round use. Thicker isn’t automatically better for everyone, though. I would rather understand how you intend to use your cabin before recommending a specification you may not need.

Insulated Log Cabins for Year-Round Use

If you intend to use your garden log cabin regularly throughout the year, do not concentrate on wall thickness alone. Heat can also be lost through the roof, floor, windows and doors, so the complete specification matters. For a home office, studio, or hobby room used for long periods in colder weather, roof and floor insulation can be particularly worthwhile.

You can compare our insulated log cabins if colder-weather comfort is important. Insulation doesn’t mean a cabin will never require heating, but it can make it easier to maintain a comfortable temperature and use energy more efficiently.

Garden Log Cabins for Offices, Gyms, Hobbies and Relaxing

One of the reasons garden log cabins are so popular is their versatility. They provide useful extra space without taking over a room in your home. Before choosing a cabin, I recommend planning the interior rather than simply selecting the exterior design you like most.

Log Cabins for Home Offices

A log cabin can make an excellent home office because it provides a dedicated working space away from the distractions of the house. Consider desk size, chairs, storage, natural light, electrics, internet access, heating, and how often you will use the office during winter. If it will be a five-day-a-week workplace, I would give insulation more consideration than I would for occasional home working.

Garden Cabins for Gyms and Hobbies

For a garden gym, measure the equipment and then allow enough space to use it comfortably. For hobbies or studio use, consider workbenches, tables, shelving and storage as well as the position of doors and windows. Designing the room from the inside out often leads to a much better choice of garden cabin.

Garden Log Cabins for Relaxing and Entertaining

If the cabin is mainly for relaxing or entertaining, the outlook and layout can be particularly important. Think about where you will sit, the view across the garden and how the doors connect the cabin with your outside space. In this situation, a well-positioned smaller cabin can sometimes work better than choosing the largest building available.

Different Styles of Log Cabin

A professionally painted 44mm garden log cabin completed for one of our customers in Guildford. This Trentan Haslemere was finished in two complementary Demidekk Cleantech colours, creating an attractive contrast between the main timber walls and the window and door frames.
Trentan Haslemere log cabin with porch
Our painter was in Guildford last week to complete the exterior finish on this Trentan Haslemere log cabin for one of our customers. Measuring 4.2m x 3m and constructed from substantial 44mm interlocking timber, the cabin was professionally painted using Demidekk Cleantech paint purchased through us. The customer chose “Lys Antikkgra” for the main building, complemented by contrasting “Aske” on the windows and door frames. The two-colour finish highlights the cabin’s joinery and demonstrates how carefully chosen paint colours can personalise a garden log cabin while also providing important protection for the exterior timber.

Log cabins are available in traditional and contemporary designs, so consider how the building will look in your garden as well as how it works internally. Apex cabins provide the familiar pitched-roof appearance, while pent-roof cabins offer a cleaner contemporary look that is particularly popular for garden offices and studios.

If you have an awkward garden layout, our corner log cabins can make excellent use of a corner while providing an attractive outlook over the garden. For something more traditional, consider our Clockhouse log cabins. Selected models are also available as painted log cabins if you would prefer a professionally applied colour finish.

What Size Garden Cabin Should I Choose?

Start with what needs to fit inside rather than automatically buying the largest cabin your garden can accommodate. Measure desks, furniture, gym equipment, workbenches or storage and allow enough room to move around comfortably. You can browse our log cabins by size to narrow down the choices.

Remember the outside of the building as well. A timber cabin needs suitable access for installation and future maintenance, so I avoid positioning it unnecessarily close to fencing, walls, or vegetation.

My Experience With Garden Buildings Since 1979

I’m Robin Antill, founder of 1st Choice Leisure Buildings. I left school at 15 and started my first garden building business in 1979, trading as Marina Sheds. Being directly involved with timber buildings taught me about construction, where quality matters, and why buildings that look similar in a photograph can be very different when you inspect them properly.

I sold Marina Sheds in 1990, although unfortunately I did not receive all the money I was due from the sale. By 1992 we had moved into a much broader range of buildings, including summerhouses, garages, garden rooms and log cabins. That change in direction led to the name Titan Garden Buildings.

My son Craig joined me in 1992 after studying carpentry at Guildford College from 1990. His formal carpentry and woodworking knowledge complemented the practical manufacturing, selling and customer experience I had developed since 1979.

We sold Titan Garden Buildings in 1998. In 2000, Craig and I decided to retail selected quality products from specialist manufacturers rather than being restricted to buildings made by one company, and we formed 1st Choice Leisure Buildings. Today Craig runs the day-to-day business, and I support him and the team whenever required.

More than four decades around garden buildings have taught me not to recommend something simply because it has the thickest walls or highest price. I prefer to understand what somebody wants their building to do and then help them choose an appropriate specification. Real Log Cabins Supplied to Our Customers

A garden log cabin supplied to one of our customers in Kent.
Wooden log cabin with double glass doors, two tall windows, and a dark roof, set on a paved patio in a residential garden
Our installers were in Rochester recently to build one of our Humber Rochester long-ridge apex log cabins! The size is 4.6m x 4m x 44mm with an EPDM rubber roof and PVCu windows and door frames in Anthracite Grey. Our installers also laid the cabin’s timber over base, included roof and floor insulation, gutters and a laminate floor in Tawney Chestnut. The customer also purchased their Demidekk Cleantech paint in Fog Mist from us, and our painter will visit soon to paint the cabin.

One of the best ways to judge garden log cabins is to see how they look after being installed in real gardens. Over the years, we have supplied and installed cabins in many different sizes, styles and specifications for customers across the UK. These photographs show genuine customer buildings, not computer-generated images or catalogue settings.

These completed projects are also useful when comparing specifications. They show what different wall thicknesses, colours, doors, windows, roof coverings, and cabin sizes look like in real residential gardens, not just on a product page.

Questions to Ask Before Buying a Log Cabin

Is a 44mm Log Cabin Thick Enough?

For many garden offices, hobby rooms, studios and leisure uses, yes. A well-made 44mm cabin is a substantial garden building. If you intend to heat and occupy it for long periods throughout winter, I would also consider roof and floor insulation, glazing, heating and whether moving to a 70mm specification would provide worthwhile benefits for your particular use.

Can I Use a Log Cabin All Year Round?

Yes, provided you choose an appropriate specification. For regular winter occupation, look at the whole building rather than wall thickness alone. Roof and floor insulation, glazing, suitable heating and ventilation all help make a garden cabin comfortable year-round.

Do Log Cabins Need Planning Permission?

Many garden log cabins can be installed without a planning application when they meet the relevant permitted development requirements, but this depends on factors including the building’s position, height, intended use and the property itself. Additional restrictions can apply, so if planning permission is important to your project, check the requirements for your property and consult your local planning authority where necessary.

What Base Does a Log Cabin Need?

A log cabin needs a firm, level and suitable foundation capable of supporting the building. The correct solution depends on the cabin, site and ground conditions. Don’t treat the base as an afterthought, because a poor foundation can affect the installation and performance of the whole building.

Can You Install My Log Cabin?

Professional installation is available for many of our log cabins, subject to the individual model, delivery location, access and a suitable prepared base. Check the product page or contact us with the cabin you are considering and your postcode, and we’ll explain the options available.

How Long Will a Garden Log Cabin Last?

There is no honest single lifespan that applies to every timber cabin. Longevity depends on the quality of the building, its base, exposure to the weather, roof condition, protective treatment and ongoing maintenance. A well-made garden log cabin that is correctly installed and properly maintained should provide many years of useful service.

Not Sure Which Log Cabin to Choose?

If you are unsure, tell us how you plan to use your cabin, approximately how much garden space you have and whether you expect to use the building regularly during winter. We can then help you compare the relevant sizes, 44mm and 70mm walls, insulation and other options rather than simply recommending the most expensive specification.

If a quality 44mm garden log cabin is all you need, I am happy to say so. If your intended use genuinely makes 70mm walls, insulation or another upgrade worthwhile, we will explain why. That is the approach I have preferred throughout my years in the garden building business.
