Our Diamond Barnham, Platinum Winchester and Southampton & Fareham buildings all provide considerably more space than a conventional garden shed, making them suitable for large-scale storage, hobbies, DIY, equipment and workshop use. The main differences are size, construction specification, insulation options and how intensively you expect to use the building.

Sizes and specifications vary by model and configuration. Check the individual building specification and available options before ordering.
Why Choose a Diamond Barnham Large Shed?
The Diamond Barnham is a strong choice when your priority is practical space and value. With sizes extending up to approximately 28×12 ft, it can provide substantially more usable room than a conventional garden shed without requiring you to move immediately into a higher-priced building range.
Reasons to Choose the Diamond Barnham
- You need substantial storage for tools, machinery, bicycles or garden equipment.
- You want space for DIY or woodworking.
- You need a particularly long garden building.
- You want flexibility over size and layout.
- You need wide access for larger equipment.
- You want a heavy-duty shed or workshop without paying for specifications you may not need.
Why Might the Diamond Barnham Be Right for You?
Choose Barnham if your priority is getting plenty of strong, practical and flexible garden-building space for your budget. It makes particular sense for storage, DIY and workshop use where insulation and a more room-like specification are not your main priorities.
Why Choose Southampton or Fareham?
Southampton and Fareham provide a step up when you want your large shed to function as more than straightforward storage. Both ranges are available in sizes up to approximately 20×16 ft and offer full-insulation options, making them particularly interesting for hobbies, DIY and more regular workshop use.
Reasons to Choose Southampton or Fareham
- You want a higher-specification large timber building.
- You expect to spend more time inside the building.
- You want a full-insulation option.
- You need plenty of space for hobbies or workshop activities.
- You want a building suitable for both substantial storage and practical working space.
- You want a choice of roof styles and configurations.
Why Might Southampton or Fareham Be Right for You?
Southampton or Fareham could be right for you if the building needs to be both a large shed and a comfortable practical workspace. The availability of full insulation makes these ranges particularly worth considering if you expect to spend several hours at a time inside rather than simply entering the building to retrieve stored equipment.
Why Choose a Platinum Winchester Large Shed?
The Platinum Winchester is the range to consider when you need both a higher specification and considerably more space. Selected Winchester buildings extend up to approximately 28×16 ft, making them among the largest timber buildings in this category.
That extra width can be particularly useful. A very long but relatively narrow shed provides ample floor space. Still, a wider building gives you more freedom to arrange workbenches, machinery, storage racks, furniture or separate activity areas.
Reasons to Choose the Platinum Winchester
- You need one of the largest timber sheds in the range.
- You want dimensions extending up to approximately 28×16 ft.
- You need substantial width as well as length.
- You want a full-insulation option.
- You plan to combine storage with workshop, hobby or other uses.
- You want a higher-specification building that can adapt as your requirements change.
Why Might the Platinum Winchester Be Right for You?
Choose Winchester when size, specification and long-term versatility are more important than achieving the lowest initial price. It is particularly suitable when you need enough room to divide a large building into different functional areas or want substantial storage without sacrificing usable working space.
Large Shed Quick Recommendation
| Your Main Requirement | Our Starting Recommendation |
| Best value for substantial storage | Diamond Barnham |
| DIY and occasional workshop use | Diamond Barnham |
| Long building up to approximately 28 ft | Diamond Barnham |
| Higher specification with insulation option | Southampton / Fareham |
| Regular hobby or workshop use | Southampton / Fareham |
| Very large building with extra width | Platinum Winchester |
| Up to approximately 28×16 ft | Platinum Winchester |
| Large insulated multi-purpose building | Platinum Winchester |
| Lowest initial price of these choices | Diamond Barnham |
Which Large Shed Is Best for Me?
Choose the Diamond Barnham if you want lots of practical storage or workshop space and value for money is one of your main considerations.
Choose Southampton or Fareham if you want to step up the specification and are interested in insulation for more regular workshop, hobby or leisure use.
Choose the Platinum Winchester if you need maximum space and a higher specification. Its available dimensions of up to approximately 28×16 ft make it particularly useful when you need substantial width and length, or want a single building to perform several different functions.
The right choice ultimately depends on what will go inside. Before ordering, list your largest items, allow space for shelving or workbenches, and consider how much clear floor area you need to move around comfortably. A well-planned large shed can provide far more useful space than simply choosing the biggest dimensions that will fit in your garden.

Large Garden Sheds: More Space for Storage, Hobbies and Workshops
A large garden shed is the practical choice when an ordinary storage shed will not provide enough usable room. Large sheds can accommodate garden machinery, tools, bicycles, workbenches, shelving, outdoor furniture and hobby equipment while still leaving space to move around comfortably. They can also be configured as workshops, hobby sheds, secure equipment stores or more personalised garden buildings.
From years of helping customers choose garden buildings, one lesson stands out: it is usually worth thinking about what you may want to store in the shed in two or three years, not just what needs to go inside it today. Lawn equipment, bikes, shelving, workbenches and garden furniture quickly use available floor space, so choosing a properly planned building is often better value than discovering your new shed is already full.
Our large wooden shed ranges use quality redwood deal timber rather than cheap whitewood, with substantial timber framing on the applicable ranges, and options can include toughened glass, double doors, different roof styles, painted finishes, insulation and bespoke layouts. Many wooden buildings also include professional assembly, subject to the product and delivery area. If you want to explore the complete range first, visit our garden sheds department.
What Is a Large Garden Shed?
A large garden shed is a garden building designed to provide considerably more storage or working space than a typical compact shed. Rather than being used only for a mower and a few hand tools, a larger shed can provide dedicated areas for equipment, shelving, bicycles, benches, machinery and hobbies. Our ranges include substantial timber buildings in a wide choice of sizes, with certain ranges extending to approximately 28ft in length and bespoke configurations available where a standard size or layout is unsuitable.
The best large shed is not simply the biggest building that will physically fit your garden. It should have the right dimensions, door positions, access, internal layout, construction, base and roof style for the way you intend to use it.
What Can You Use a Large Shed For?
Large sheds are extremely versatile. A well-planned building can serve several purposes at the same time, particularly when doors, windows, shelving and internal working areas are positioned before manufacture.
- Garden storage: lawnmowers, strimmers, wheelbarrows, garden furniture, barbecues, tools and seasonal equipment.
- Workshop space: a workbench, tool storage, machinery and enough clear floor area to work safely.
- Bike storage: bicycles can be kept separately from garden equipment with sufficient door width for easy access.
- Motorcycle storage: where security, access and suitable flooring are important, compare our purpose-designed motorbike sheds.
- Hobby space: model making, crafts, restoration projects and other activities requiring more room than a conventional storage shed.
- Garden retreat: customers wanting a more leisure-orientated building can also compare our man caves.
- Gardening workspace: keen gardeners needing planting benches and additional glazing should compare dedicated potting sheds.
How to Choose the Right Large Shed
Start with the job the building needs to do. Storage, workshop use, bicycles and hobby use all place different demands on the layout. Once that is clear, consider the external size, internal floor area, doors, windows, base, roof design and whether you need insulation or a protective painted finish.
1. Measure the Available Site Properly
Measure both width and depth and remember that the shed should not be squeezed into the garden simply because its nominal dimensions fit. Think about installation access, opening doors, future maintenance, nearby trees and shrubs, fences, guttering and the route used to carry items into the building.
2. Plan What Has to Go Through the Doors
Door position can be as important as shed size. A wide mower, motorcycle, large garden machine or workbench is considerably easier to manage through appropriately positioned double doors. If you regularly wheel equipment in and out, think about the route from the garden entrance to the shed before choosing the final door location.
3. Choose the Internal Layout Before Ordering
Mark out shelving, benches and equipment on the planned floor area. A shed that looks enormous when empty can become surprisingly restricted once deep shelving and a full-size bench are fitted. Bespoke positioning of doors and windows can make a substantial difference, so customers with particular requirements should also explore our bespoke sheds.
4. Decide Whether It Is Storage or a Working Building
A straightforward storage shed and a building intended for regular winter hobby or workshop use have different requirements. If you expect to spend significant time inside throughout the year, investigate our insulated sheds as well as suitable lighting and electrical arrangements.
5. Give the Base as Much Thought as the Shed
Large buildings need a firm, level and appropriate foundation. An unsuitable or uneven base can affect floors, doors and the long-term performance of the building. We offer several garden building and base services, including options suited to larger and heavier buildings.
Large Wooden Sheds or Large Metal Sheds?
Wood and metal can both make excellent large sheds, but they suit different priorities. Choose according to what you will store, how the building should look and whether you expect to customise or work inside it.
| Consideration | Large Wooden Shed | Large Metal Shed |
| Garden appearance | Traditional, natural appearance that is easy to integrate into most gardens. | More functional or contemporary appearance depending on the model. |
| Customisation | Excellent choice where door, window, cladding, colour, insulation or bespoke layout options are required. | Usually supplied in predetermined designs and specifications. |
| Workshop or hobby use | Ideal if you’re using the building as a workshop or hobby room. The timber frame makes it much easier to insulate and line, so it’s a more comfortable place to spend time all year round. | A good choice for storing tools and equipment securely, though if you’re planning to work inside regularly, you’ll need to think about condensation and temperature changes. |
| Security | Good-quality timber construction can provide substantial storage security when combined with appropriate doors, locks and sensible glazing. | Heavy-duty steel models can be particularly attractive where high security is a priority. |
| Maintenance | Timber needs appropriate protection and maintenance according to its treatment and finish. | Quality galvanised and coated steel generally requires relatively little routine maintenance. |
| Best suited to | Storage, workshops, hobbies and customers wanting a personalised garden building. | Tools, machinery, bikes and equipment where security and low maintenance are priorities. |
See our complete wooden sheds and metal sheds ranges if the material is more important to you than a particular size category.
What Should You Look for in a Quality Large Wooden Shed?
When comparing large wooden sheds, do not judge a building on floor size and headline price alone. A garden building is a combination of its timber, framing, cladding, floor, roof, doors, windows, treatment and base. Weakness in one area can undermine an otherwise attractive specification.
Look closely at the framing dimensions and the type of timber used. Check whether the floor and roof are proper timber construction or lower-cost sheet materials, find out what glazing is supplied, and ask exactly what treatment is included. Our large wooden shed ranges include redwood deal construction, and selected buildings can be specified with different cladding, finishes and other options.
If you want a shed that’ll stand up to the British weather with less maintenance over the years, it’s well worth looking at our pressure-treated sheds. Or, if you’re set on the traditional strength and finish of interlocking timber boards, take a look at our range of tongue and groove sheds.
What Size Large Shed Do I Need?
The right shed size depends on both what you intend to put inside and how much clear working space you require. Storage-only buildings can use a greater proportion of their floor area for shelving and equipment, while workshops and hobby sheds need clear circulation space around benches and machinery.
| Requirement | What to Allow For | Useful Features |
| General family garden storage | Mower, tools, furniture, barbecue, children’s outdoor equipment and shelving. | Good wall space, shelving positions and easy-access doors. |
| Large machinery and equipment | Floor space plus a clear route from the doors to the storage position. | Double doors, strong floor and appropriate base. |
| Workshop | Bench depth, machinery, storage and safe standing area. | Natural light, suitable windows, electrics and optional insulation. |
| Bicycles and tools | Bike length, handlebars and access without moving other equipment first. | Wide access and separate wall storage. |
| Hobby building | Furniture, work surfaces, equipment and comfortable circulation space. | Windows, insulation and a personalised layout. |
If you only need a compact storage building, buying a larger shed than necessary may waste valuable garden space. Compare our small sheds before deciding. Conversely, if you need a dedicated working building rather than simply extra storage, plan the interior around your bench, machinery or hobby equipment before settling on the footprint.
Apex, Pent and Alternative Large Shed Designs
Roof shape affects appearance, internal headroom and where a shed works best in the garden. An apex roof gives the familiar traditional shed appearance and provides increased height towards the centre. A pent or mono-pitch style can suit more contemporary layouts and locations where you prefer the roof to fall in one direction.
For a long building beside a wall, boundary or narrow section of garden, look at our lean-to sheds. If the available space is an awkward garden corner, a purpose-designed corner shed may use the site more efficiently. For customers attracted by distinctive styling and additional roof volume, our Dutch barn sheds are another option worth considering.
Should I Choose a Painted or Pressure-Treated Large Shed?
A factory-applied colour finish can turn a large shed into an attractive feature rather than simply a storage building. It is particularly useful when the shed is prominent from the house or patio, and you want the finish to coordinate with fencing, garden furniture or other buildings. Explore the available options in our painted sheds.
Pressure treatment has a different purpose. It is designed to give timber additional protection and can be a sensible choice when durability and reduced treatment requirements are priorities. Whichever finish you choose, follow the maintenance guidance supplied for the particular building rather than assuming every timber shed requires the same treatment schedule.
Which Type of Shed Is Best for Your Requirements?
| If Your Main Requirement Is… | Consider… | Why |
| Maximum general storage | Large sheds | Plenty of flexible floor and wall space for mixed garden equipment. |
| A made-to-measure layout | Bespoke sheds | Useful when standard dimensions or door and window positions do not suit the site. |
| Tools and garden machinery | Tool sheds | Focuses the building around organised equipment storage and access. |
| Bicycle storage | Bike sheds | Designed around bicycle access, storage and security requirements. |
| Motorcycle security | Motorbike sheds | Purpose-specific options for larger and more valuable equipment. |
| Year-round hobby or working use | Insulated sheds | Better suited to regular occupation through changing temperatures. |
| Gardening and propagation | Potting sheds | Greater emphasis on glazing, working benches and growing conditions. |
| Minimal maintenance and strong security | Metal sheds | Heavy-duty steel options are well suited to equipment and secure storage. |
| A compact garden | Small sheds | Avoids sacrificing more garden area than your storage requirement justifies. |
Common Mistakes When Buying a Large Garden Shed
Buying on External Dimensions Alone
Customers often measure the available patch of garden but forget about usable internal space. Wall construction, shelving, benches, door movement and equipment all reduce the clear area you can actually use. Plan the inside as carefully as the outside.
Choosing a Shed That Is Only Just Big Enough
Storage requirements usually grow. If the site and budget reasonably allow it, provide some spare capacity rather than filling the building on the first day. This does not mean buying the biggest shed available; it means allowing sensible room for future equipment.
Ignoring the Base Until After Ordering
A large shed needs a suitable, level base. Do not assume an old patio, uneven concrete slab or area of lawn will automatically be appropriate. Establish the required base dimensions and specification before installation and ask for advice if you are unsure.
Forgetting Delivery and Installation Access
The finished building may fit perfectly while access to the installation site does not. Check gates, alleyways, changes in ground level, neighbouring property restrictions and obstacles such as garages, extensions, trees and walls before placing the order.
Putting the Doors Where They Look Best Rather Than Where They Work Best
A visually symmetrical layout is not always a practical one. Position access according to the route taken by lawnmowers, bikes, motorcycles or workshop equipment. On a bespoke building, changing a door position can make the shed much easier to use for its entire life.
Not Allowing Space for Maintenance
Where possible, provide sensible access around a timber building so that walls, roof edges, guttering and finishes can be inspected and maintained. Squeezing a large shed tightly between fences and vegetation can make future maintenance unnecessarily difficult.
Don’t Overdo the Windows if You’re Storing Valuable Equipment
Natural light is always nice to have, especially if you use your shed as a workshop or somewhere to enjoy your hobbies. But if it’s mainly there to store expensive tools, machinery or garden equipment, it’s worth thinking twice before choosing lots of windows. Fewer windows, or placing them where they don’t give a clear view inside, can make the shed less tempting to opportunist thieves. It’s really a case of deciding what’s more important for the way you’ll use it – plenty of daylight or a bit more privacy and security.
Choosing Storage Specification for a Building You Will Actually Work In
If you expect to spend hours in the shed, think beyond storage. Natural light, insulation, ventilation, electrical requirements, internal lining, working height and bench positions should be considered at the design stage rather than treated as an afterthought.
Buying the Cheapest Specification Without Comparing Construction
A low headline price can be attractive, but compare what is actually included. Timber quality, framing, cladding, floor, roof, treatment, glazing, delivery and installation can differ considerably between garden buildings. Compare like with like before deciding which shed represents better long-term value.
Before Ordering a Large Shed: Our Practical Checklist
- Measure the available garden area accurately.
- Decide exactly what the shed will be used for.
- List the largest items that need to pass through the doors.
- Plan shelving, benches and machinery positions.
- Check the required base size and specification.
- Check access from the road to the installation site.
- Consider whether you need single or double doors.
- Choose an apex, pent, reverse-apex or alternative layout according to the site.
- Decide how much natural light you need and where windows should be positioned.
- Consider pressure treatment, a painted finish or insulation before manufacture.
- Check current planning requirements applicable to your property and proposed building where necessary.
- Before you order, it’s worth checking that we deliver to your postcode and confirming the installation options available for the model you’ve chosen.
You can check our delivery areas online, or if you’d rather see the quality for yourself, visit one of our garden building display sites. It’s the best way to compare different styles, construction methods and finishes before making your decision.
Why We Recommend Seeing a Large Shed Before You Buy
A photograph cannot show you how solid a floor feels, how substantial the framing is, how doors operate or how much usable space there really is inside a building. Where practical, we always recommend walking inside a garden building before making a major purchase. It is much easier to understand 12ft, 16ft or 20ft of shed when you are standing in a building rather than looking at dimensions on a screen.
Visiting a display site also allows you to compare timber thicknesses, cladding styles, roof designs, doors, glazing and finishes side by side. If you cannot visit, study the full specification carefully and ask about anything that is not clearly stated.
Frequently Asked Questions About Large Garden Sheds
What is the best size for a large garden shed?
In my experience, most people regret buying too small far more often than buying a little bigger. Start by thinking about what actually needs to go inside—your mower, bikes, tools, pots, bags of compost or whatever else you want to keep under cover. Then make sure there’s enough room to move around without having to drag everything out to reach one item.
If you plan to add shelving, a potting bench or extra storage in the future, allow for that now. A shed should be practical to use day in, day out, not just big enough to squeeze everything in. It’s always worth buying the smallest size that gives you comfortable working space and a bit of room to grow, rather than choosing purely on the outside measurements.
What can I store in a large shed?
A large shed can store lawnmowers, garden machinery, bicycles, tools, outdoor furniture, barbecues and seasonal equipment. With a suitable layout and specification, it can also function as a workshop, hobby room or combined storage and working building.
Are large wooden sheds suitable for workshops?
Yes. A quality large wooden shed can make an excellent workshop because the layout can accommodate benches, shelves, machinery, windows and electrical equipment. If you intend to use the workshop throughout the year, consider insulation and internal comfort as part of the original specification.
Should I buy an apex or pent large shed?
It really comes down to where the shed is going and how you’ll use it. An apex shed gives you that classic look, with plenty of headroom in the middle, so it’s a good choice if you’re storing taller tools or spending time working inside. A pent shed has a single sloping roof, making it a tidy option alongside a fence or wall, and it often suits modern gardens better.
Whichever style you choose, don’t get too hung up on the roof shape. In my experience, the position of the doors and windows has a much bigger impact on how practical the shed is day after day. A well-placed door and plenty of natural light will make more difference than whether the roof has one slope or two.
Are large sheds available with double doors?
Double-door options are available on many models and are worth considering when storing lawnmowers, machinery, bicycles or bulky furniture. Measure the largest item that must pass through the entrance rather than assuming a standard doorway will be sufficient.
Can a large shed be made to a bespoke size?
Yes, bespoke options are available across relevant timber ranges. A bespoke shed is particularly useful for unusually shaped gardens, specific door or window positions, workshop layouts or sites where a standard size wastes valuable space.
Can large garden sheds be insulated?
Yes, insulation options are available on suitable buildings. Insulation is most valuable when a shed will be used regularly as a workshop, hobby space or other occupied building rather than purely for storing garden equipment.
What base does a large shed need?
A large shed is only as good as the base it sits on. Get the base right, and your doors will open properly, the roof will stay square, and you’ll avoid problems further down the line.
The base needs to be solid, level and big enough to support the whole building. What works best will depend on the size and weight of the shed, the ground conditions, and what you’re planning to store inside.
For heavier buildings, a concrete base is often the safest choice. If you’ve already got a sound patio or paved area, that can sometimes be used with the right overbase, provided it’s flat, stable and properly supported. In some situations, a purpose-built timber subframe is also a suitable option, particularly where a concrete base isn’t practical.
If you’re in any doubt, have a look through the manufacturer’s instructions before you begin. Most sheds go together similarly, but there are often little differences that are worth knowing about before you get stuck in.
After selling sheds for years, we’ve found the same thing time and again – it’s the base that makes all the difference. It might not be the part anyone gets excited about, but if it’s solid, level and square, everything else falls into place. The shed goes up properly, the doors shut as they should, and you won’t be forever tweaking it after a wet winter or a spell of frosty weather.
Can I put a large shed straight onto grass?
just grass is not suitable as you need a firm concrete, slab or sub-base. We can help with this. A suitable base helps keep the building level, supports its weight correctly and contributes significantly to reliable operation of floors, doors and the overall structure.
Are large wooden sheds delivered and assembled?
Many of our wooden shed ranges include delivery and professional assembly, subject to the particular building and applicable delivery restrictions. Always check the individual product information and your delivery area before ordering.
Should I choose a pressure-treated large shed?
Pressure-treated timber is worth considering when long-term protection against outdoor exposure is a priority. It does not remove the need for good installation and sensible maintenance, but it provides additional protection to the timber. Compare our pressure-treated range with painted and standard treated options to decide which best suits your garden and maintenance preference.
Are large metal sheds better than wooden sheds?
Neither material is automatically better. Large wooden sheds provide excellent customisation and are particularly suitable for workshops, hobbies and traditional gardens. Heavy-duty metal sheds can be attractive for secure equipment storage and low routine maintenance. The best material depends on your intended use, security requirements, appearance and budget.
Do I need planning permission for a large garden shed?
Planning requirements depend on factors including the building’s size, height, position, intended use, the property and any local restrictions. Do not assume that every shed is automatically permitted simply because it is a garden building. Check the current requirements applicable to your property before committing to a large structure if there is any doubt.
Can I see your large sheds before buying?
Yes. Customers can visit our garden building display site near Guildford, Woking and Ripley in Surrey. Seeing buildings in person is particularly valuable when buying a large shed because it allows you to compare construction, internal space, doors, glazing, finishes and overall quality before ordering.
Choosing Your Large Shed
The best large shed is one planned around its job rather than chosen on size alone. Start with what you need to store or do, measure the garden and access carefully, plan the internal layout, choose an appropriate base and then decide on timber or metal, roof style, doors, windows, treatment, colour and insulation. A little extra thought before ordering usually produces a building that remains practical long after the initial need for more storage has been solved.

While browsing through big sheds for sale, you should consider multiple factors to determine which product is best-suited for your needs. Some of the most important ones are as follows:
There are multiple sizes to choose from, so consider whether you need, for example, a 10×8 shed for storing garden tools, a 12×10 workshop, or a 16×10 building for mixed use.
If you’re looking for a classic large shed with a lot of headroom, the apex roof can be a better choice. It is perfect for standing tall tools, shelving, or simply moving around more comfortably.
On the other hand, pent-roof sheds offer a clean, contemporary appearance and can be positioned against a wall or fence, making them a better choice for narrower gardens.
Our double doors make moving bulky items easy, so they are worth considering if you are going to store furniture or large equipment.
You can also customise door placement (front, side, or both) and choose windows for natural light or no windows for more security.
Pay attention to the materials used to build your large shed for more longevity and cost-effectiveness.
We use premium tongue-and-groove flooring and high-performance roofing felts, which are far more durable than standard options.
Integrated vents on our Platinum range help prevent condensation and ensure airflow, which is especially important for large wooden sheds used year-round.
If you’re going to keep valuable items in your shed, make sure to choose upgraded security features like high-quality locks or heavy-duty hinges.
Every shed needs a solid, level foundation. To ensure long-term stability and prevent moisture issues, we recommend concrete, paving slabs, or a timber base.
While many companies leave you with flat packs, we offer free professional assembly or fitting for multiple products in many areas of England.
This way, you can ensure stable, properly assembled construction with little effort. Just make sure it’s available for your chosen model and region.
