Garden Sheds Droopy Doors Syndrome !!

Hi, I'm Robin Antill, founder of 1st Choice Leisure Buildings, and I use my expertise gained over 39 years in the garden buildings industry to understand that each customer is different. With my manufacturing, retailing and customer service experience my articles help people choose their ideal shed, garden workshop, summerhouse, log cabin or garden office needs to suit their requirement and that is key to satisfaction. And what do I do when I'm not writing? You may find me following Grimsby Town Football Club or riding roller coasters - so plenty of 'ups and downs' in my life.

It may seem that the door is a relatively unimportant part of the shed, provided it opens and closes when required then that's all there is to it. Well you would be wrong!! The door is actually the only part of the shed which is a movable object (besides the walls of the cheap sheds which can move in the wind, but are not meant to) and the actual stress put on the door is quite a lot. This is why the door should be designed to cope with this constant movement but sadly many of the mass market cheap garden shed makers either don't understand this, don't know this or don't care. Whatever the reason this is no good for YOUR shed if you don't want problems.

It is vital for your building to last a long time without problems for the shed door to be made correctly. This means that the door should have two (2) diagonal braces inside the horizontal door timber (ledges). If you don't have this bracing then all that's holding the door together is the nails through the planks of wood into the horizontal timber ledges.

With the constant opening and the weight of the door it will get the dreaded Droopy Door Syndrome. You may feel that all the spam messages you get suggesting a cure for drooping and making your shed attractive to their partners may help but even they won't work and you would be very silly even trying that option.

Whilst not fatal it will make your shed less appealing to the eye and the love you had for your pride and joy will disappear faster than the promises the governments of this country make. You will end up not being able to close the door or slide the bolt across, you will end up putting bricks or pieces of wood against the door to keep it closed - not very satisfactory.

How will I know whether the doors have diagonal bracing? Just take look on the inside on the doors or in the photographs on the web. It is unlikely to be able to see one in the flesh beforehand as these cheap shed makers know you would not be impressed. And why do these cheap sheds not have diagonal bracing? To save money and make their sheds appear better value. Please remember value does not always equate to cheaper. Cheap is always cheap.

All our timber garden sheds doors come with TWO (2) diagonal braces and THREE (3) horizontal ledges to ensure that your shed won't get the Garden Shed Droopy Door Syndrome, we also offer an option for joinery doors which are even stronger with mortice locks and handles and on the Diamond Barnham workshops the doors are more like barn doors than shed doors. Take a look at our photograph of the BarnHAM garden workshop doors on this page. (Maybe that's why they call them Barnham because they look like a barn door)

Come down to our display site and take a look for yourself. Or go to see the cheap sheds display site - oh sorry they don't have any !! And why?? Just think about it.
