10×9 Shed destroyed by Fire Authority Boss
When we were young we all had dreams about what we would like to do when we left school. In my day driving a steam engine, being an astronaut or in a pop group. As the years went on youngsters ideas change with maybe wanting to be in the police or driving a fire engine, Nowadays high on the list would being a footballer or entrepreneur. Although many children have no idea what an entrepreneur is or what they do. All they know is that they earn lots of money. The youngsters back in the 70’s and 80’s who wanted to be in the Fire Brigade so they could get the opportunity to drive fire engines had to endure years of specialised training. Over the years their experience grows and they can move up the ladder from fire-fighter to leading fire-fighter, then crew manager, sub officer and station officer. The really ambitious can end up on the Fire and Rescue Authority being responsible for the overall running of the Fire Service and ensuring all the established practices are followed and improved upon.
George Koowaree, who sits on the Kent Fire and Rescue Authority, the aim of which is do curtail the spread of fire and reduce any chance of fires in the first place. How embarrassed must he have been after not following one of the main roles of a fire-fighter as follows:-
The 4 main roles of a fire-fighter are:
1/ To prevent fire and accidents from occurring in the first place.
2/ Educating the community by visiting schools, community centres and people in their own homes.
3/ Advising people about planning escape routes within their own homes in case of a fire.
4/ Actively seeking to understand and to value diverse individuals and groups.
It seemed like a good idea to enjoy a barbecue, who hasn’t, on a pleasant day. When he had finished he dumped the hot barbecue coals near a pile of leaves. Little did he realise that this was to start a raging fire, with flames up to 40 ft tall engulfing his garden. This quickly spread to nearby properties destroying a 10 X 9 timber shed, a greenhouse and a fence.
When questioned he said he had only became aware of the fire when the fire brigade arrived at his home in Ashford, Kent. Mr Koowaree, a Lib Dem Councillor for Kent County Council, which is rather worrying to say the least that he did not notice 40 ft flames. He said he had put cold water on the coals but did not check to see that they were out. He thought he had made the equipment safe.
His 89 year old neighbour, who garden buildings were burnt, said that he could see the flames going 40 ft up the tree and melted his greenhouse. Another neighbour, 77, said that the fire had totally destroyed his rear fence. A source at the Fire Brigade said that this guy sits on the fire authority yet he can’t even put out a barbecue properly. He admitted that Mr Koowaree was embarrassed to say the least.
The only good thing about this is that no one got injured and that another 10X8 garden shed will need to be made to replace the damaged one. Lets hope they give us a ring so we can offer them a great replacement
