Garden Sheds or Summer Houses – The One and the Same?
When it comes to choosing a garden building for your home it often involves making some compromises, whether it’s to do with money or different opinions of the family members of making a firm decision as to what to use the garden building for. You will find the garden shed, traditionally is used for general storage or for a small workshop where as a 20×10 summer house will be used more for all the family to relax in and laze about.
Both have their merits and both will fulfil their jobs admirably but over time the required usage can change. The shed can be used more and more as a place to relax and to pursue one’s hobby and the summerhouse can end up being used as a general store room. I know my 20 x 10 summerhouse in my garden has done so from time to time although I have had a good clear out only recently and can now be used for its original purpose.
Overall you will find, essentially, both buildings are timber boxes designed to serve its purpose. The main difference is that the shed tends to look more functional and the summerhouse will be a little more fancy and be a feature in the garden. Construction wise, again, there is very little difference, I don’t include the ‘cheap and nasty’ garden buildings in this statement as they are cheap for a reason. There maybe a little extra height in the summerhouse than the shed and there may be a balcony on the front of the summerhouse as well as fancy fascias and often go up to about 20 x 10 in size, well maybe in the larger posher gardens.
However as time goes on you may want to transform your shed more into a summerhouse and your summerhouse more into a garden shed. You could, of course, just use the buildings differently but just a little alterations to these garden buildings will make a difference.
With the sheds you can add fancy fascia boards to the front edge of the roofs and maybe add a black tape to the inside of the glass windows which will give it a Georgian appearance (you have to use your imagination with this) By the use of colour the garden shed can take up a totally different look and will become a feature of the garden. With bright vibrant colours with contrasting colours for the fascias, corner boards and around the windows this will transform the look of it.
This will then give you a place where you can escape the day to day stresses of your daily life. The colour will help in that and will brighten up you day. UKTV suggest this as an option and even go as far as to say a fantasy theme could even be introduced to your shed cum summer house.
They suggest that the outside of the shed itself should be kept plain and understated and to use the interior space for letting your creative juices go wild. They suggest this will mean that it won’t detract from the serene beauty of the garden. A suggestion is a Greek Mediterranean theme in cobalt blue and white and when combined with wooden shutters and simple floor cushions should give a stunning conversion.
Either way you can transform your shed, whether it’s from the outside so it appeals from your house or from inside where you are the only ones to enjoy the transformation. The important thing is this can be done and demonstrates the virtues of these wonderful buildings and summer house workshop found in the British gardens. Maybe you can dream of a very large 20×10 summer house when you win the ‘pools’ (showing my age now).
