Are You Depriving Your Children of a Garden Imagination Centre?
The garden shed is a very versatile building with a myriad of uses. From the normal storage of garden items such as tools, garden furniture, bikes, lawnmowers and all manner of tins through to hobby rooms, recreation rooms where the children can hang out, even home offices or temporary spare bedrooms. However I would not fancy spending a night in my 7×4 shed with all the creepy crawlies in there. Children will be delighted to have one for their own use where they can act out their fantasies and play adventure games. Traditionally children used to make shelters put together with old bits of fences with a sheet from the airing cupboard thrown over or, if there were really lucky, maybe a tree house which has the ultimate ‘one up manship’ attached to it. Up in the tree house these lucky children can look out over their empire and can invite their special friends to play.
Even during the winter a few chairs could be thrown together with a few sheets, ideally plastic, over the top and pegged down to keep the wind and rain off and children would play out in the open not noticing the cold. How great was it when you were a child with the world one big playground. Things do change but if your garden and garden shed can help to preserve a little bit of those innocent days then don’t we have a duty to help. Whilst there is no need to lash out a lot of money there is a nice range of sheds on display at this garden shed display site.
Besides the above usage as a play den for the kids you will find that the garden shed can become a work area where all those dirty jobs, necessary in a normal family life, can be performed. In it any mess can be contained in that area and this will enable your home to stay clean from any dirty marks which can stain the carpet or damage the furniture.
It’s obvious that the garden shed is more than a shed and is, in fact, a haven for your home. Your quality of life can be improved by escaping to it for some ‘me’ time of by utilising the space, even if it’s as small as 7 x 4, as a little home office, whether it’s the home finances you are sorting out, or running a little business.
The great thing about garden sheds is that they can be made to suit you, certainly if you visit a forward looking shed company such as 1st Choice Leisure Buildings. Within their range you can select, more or less, any size (including 7×4) to suit your needs or to fit the space you have. They can provide a shed with door (or doors) to meet your needs, the windows can go anywhere. And you can even have Georgian style windows to make your shed look a little nicer than the normal ‘run of the mill’ shed.
The number of people working from home has increased in recent years due to the difficult times the country is going through. However, you will find that if you can give your children just a some part of your garden shed then they will grab it with both hands.
The beauty of the garden shed for children is that it makes them use THEIR imagination with their friends, which we all used to do as children. It also will get them away from the Play Station, Xbox or Wii which must be a good thing and out into the fresh air. You will find that your children will love you for it, just don’t expect them to show it, certainly if they are teenagers.
What TV Shows have Garden Sheds as the Stars?
The garden shed is not usually a star of the show even if your shed is the star in your garden and this is a shame. With all the virtues of these buildings you would have thought that someone could have written a whole series about these wonderful buildings. I’m sure that many men would have watched it and probably a lot of women would who, nowadays, are also trying to get in on this male institution. Over the years many TV stars have come out with their love of their sheds and the fact that they can be customised to suit their specific tastes. Sarah Beeny had converted a garden shed into a traditional British pub and named it the King’s Head – so two traditions together. Where as Vic Reeves shed was designed as the British Museum – again two traditions together. After a period when these sheds could be seen in public they were both auctioned for charity.
In a British situation comedy ‘Coming of Age’ a 7×4 shed was included as part of the locations where the story lines played out. Based on the life of 5 six form students this ran for three series. It was only shown on BBC3 so did not reach a very large audience.
In ‘Men Behaving Badly’ a garden shed was part of one episode when Tony decided to build a sauna in his garden shed, another one of his madcap ideas. He came up with the name of his shed as the ‘shedna’ as it combined a sauna with a garden shed. It goes without saying that his plans to seduce Debs into the sauna in the shed comes to nothing when it blows up.
Other situation comedies include Bless this House, where Sid spend lots of time in his garden shed. In one episode he is making whisky and when he spills some on some wood it takes the varnish off. However, that did not stop them drinking it. In another BBC series ‘No place Like Home’ again the garden shed did feature quite a lot.
You could even find a 7 x4 shed featured in the long running Top Gear show with Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May. However it would be surprising if it had not been as this show seems to have been running since the year dot.
In this episode they were competing to see which sports car would carry large objects or purchases the best. In their chatting they decided that a garden shed would be a good test to see how good the car would be. The next thing to do was to find a couple of sheds and this is when a Kirkham garden centre was called. When the call came through about this experiment the manager of garden centre, John Butcher, was naturally very surprised. He was asked if two garden sheds could be used in filming and, after agreeing, were then strapped to the back of their cars and drove off down the road. Just another typical mad cap episode.
If any of their other episodes were examples I’m surprised they did not try to blow them up. They have done unspeakable things to caravans by dropping them from great heights and had them catch light, however, I think if they try to do anything to the loveable garden shed there would be uproar.
Do you know of any TV shows where the garden shed plays a key role?
