Let a Wallaby Cut the Grass in the Garden for You
Our gardens are really special and precious to us as these are OUR little part of the countryside (so to speak) the greenery growing and the flowers, trees and shrubs are delightful when growing and it’s a pleasure to sit out and enjoy them. They do take a little looking after and this is where your 7X7 shed or workshop could be useful. As garden tools tend to be rather dirty at times you don’t really want them in your kitchen where you prepare food so your shed is the place for them. Besides the garden tools required you are likely to need a lawn mower of some sort or another. There are various types of lawn mowers available from the manual through to electric and petrol. The traditional lawn mower for using in the garden was the ‘push – pull’ manual lawn mower and this would probably have been used by our fathers or grandfathers. They would lovingly clean this after use before storing away in their garden shed. You don’t very often see these nowadays. If you do have one in good condition it might be worth looking after and keeping in your shed because one day it might be worth a few bob.
Most lawn mowers for the garden are electric, either hover mowers or ones with wheels and maybe a roller. With these you have to run a lead from your timber shed to the mower and this will then work quite happily over most normal gardens. It’s very important that you have a earth-leakage circuit breaker in your shed in case you run over the cable. It’s a good idea to wear rubber gloves and good strong shoes as you cut the grass in your garden.
Other options are lawn mowers which run on rechargeable batteries and are becoming more popular in slightly larger gardens as they are not restrained by the length of the lead running down the garden. You then move on to petrol driven lawn mowers which means you are totally free from the house. These are used mainly on larger gardens and can sometimes be ‘sit on’ mowers so they can be driven around your garden. Usually only on very large estates and are often likely to have their own dedicated shed, at least 7X7 in size, where they will ‘live’ and usually with a ramp into it for easy access.
An interesting option to the above is to think about a wallaby as a lawn cutter. Yes – I said a wallaby. With this option you would not have to lug the lawnmower our of your timber shed every time you want to cut the grass as the wallabies would work 24 hours a dab keeping your garden grass short. This is according to Mary Davies who lives in Horsham in West Sussex. She breeds these marsupials at Leonardslee Gardens who says these will do a good job.
Depending on the colour or gender these animals sell for from £300 up to £1000 but they need to be bought in pairs as they need company. However, they are hard workers and can get to places in your garden where a lawnmower can’t. Downside is you won’t have nice stripes down the garden but it will be well cut. They also need at least an acre of garden for them to graze on, so this counts out most of the population.
There however is a waiting list, surprisingly, for these small kangaroos. Mrs Davies have a group of albino and Bennett’s wallabies which she bought about 15 years ago and is helping to meet demand. The demand for these animals as an alternative to the garden lawn mower for keeping paddocks, fields and large gardens has grown over the year. I personally feel it is better to water the grass with whisky so it comes up ‘half cut’ saves at least half the work and I can then retire to my delightful 7X7 shed for a ‘wee dram’
Sheds Owners Act Out Saying ‘Mine’s a Pint’
The garden shed is a favourite part of our homes as it houses all sorts of items keeping them dry (well – maybe not the cheap and nasty variety) and secure from our British weather. With the tools for the handyman, the garden furniture for the family and the garden tools – such as the lawn mower, hedge trimmer, spades and forks etc – tucked away you can be sure this love for the garden shed, which are available from companies such as this, is not likely to end soon. Many 7X7 wood sheds for sale are used for the owners hobbies, my wife uses her potting shed with some friends to follow their hobby of crafting which is the creating of birthday, Christmas or other events celebration cards, all made individually to suit the recipient. Many men have a little home from home in their shed where they find a little peace from the world. Some use them as fitness centres saving on the sky high rates which many gyms charge.
Another popular activity is wine or beer making where the garden shed can be a perfect location to make and store their produce. With the high cost of alcohol and the fact that cheap drinks are not likely to be available with the new minimum cost per unit of alcohol being proposed by the present government this is a great way of saving some money.
The important thing is that whatever you do in your shed should be legal. This was not the case in Liverpool recently where hundreds of bottles of illegal spirits were found. This ‘moonshine’ drink was only found when police raided his 7X7 shed in the Liverpool area and, effectively, found a distillery. As well as over 200 litres of illicit wine and spirit there were stills, fermentation tanks and, incredibly, leaflets advertising this alcohol for sale. So all in all, not just for their personal use or for their friends, this was a commercial operation which made it worse.
A man, which normally tends to be the case, has been questioned about the activities going on in his garden building. With the value set at over £5,000 this haul included whisky and schnapps so was highly sought after. This shed was raided after a tip-off to Liverpool’s Alcohol and Tobacco Unit, possibly by a disgruntled customer. ATU’s, Gary Baskott, warned the public about these activities as, beside being illegal, this type of booze is a massive public health risk.
Much as I encourage initiative this is one activity I can’t recommend for your garden shed. If you stick to the normal pursuits and uses then your shed will serve you well.
